WTF Happened To Morning Radio?

How annoying the radio has become. I usually (95% of the time) listen to CDs, as I want to listen to what I want to listen to when I want to listen to it. But I was driving to work today and decided to scroll the radio. I thought that just maybe some music could be found so I could see what’s new out there in an effort to not be totally out of the loop. Unfortunately, EVERY preset station (9) save for one country station was following this format:
one or two guys
one woman
blabbing about NOTHING
not funny
not thought provoking
not entertaining
Yes, that country station was playing music, but as expected, it was country music. Thus I hit the CD button again and continued my ever-so-exciting drive to work.

So, when did this happen? When did radio go from suck to super- suck. Jeeez … I guess I understand the momentum behind satellite radio now.

BFG

we are lucky in the UK. BBC radio 1 is amusing, radio 4 is excellent. amusing…good comedy/world affairs science etc.

most radio stations play a wide range of music, even commercial ones (bbc publically funded)

Listen on line, see what you think. it may not pertain directly to you but an option is an option.

www.bbc.co.uk/adio (1,2,3,4,5,6)

BFG…
I’m in Chicago, and get the same crap. Towards the noon hour it shifts into a different gear, and there seems to be more music.

Since it’s money that drives any business, there must be a demand for it. I don’t fit in that demographic. I’ll toss in a mix cd and listen to what I want.

Like yourself, I like to check things out from time to time. I agree with you, this is only helping satellite radio.

BFG are you in So-Cal?

I’m fairly fed up with the morning zoo type shows as well. Nowadays I listen to sports radio or NPR.

The formula of two guys, a girl, a doofus, and a traffic person is really getting tired…

Local radio here (concord NH) has shifted…the station that was playing Imus/classic rock has become Imus/country, and now what was the country station has become all classic rock with a much better mix. Except…starting next week, they’re starting something called “Free Beer and Hot Wings”, which sounds to me like 3 doofuses who wish they were a combination of Mike/Maddog and Imus.
Since I hate Mike, the maddog and Imus, I’m screwed.
When did Imus stop being funny? Was it when he got married? When they had the kid? When he had his eighth stroke?

10-4 buddy on the so cal. sort of … i’m north of lost angels though. closer to cen cal. i think i’ll start up the cen cal label to p!ss off the so cal and nor cal parties.

BFG

Same here… that’s why I started listening to XM.

x2 for what most everyone else said.

In Nashville, it is either annoying comedy or Bush-worship. (JeffR could definitely get a morning radio job in Nashville. Haha.)

I’m thinking hard about getting Sirius. I like my CDs, but sometimes I commute 1.5 hours in the morning, and I need more variety.

Books on Tape/CD are the cure. You can usually check them out at the local library.

Or, a little Korn always puts me in the right mood.

I got a satellite radio for Christmas and I’ll never go back.

is it bush worship or just good common sense??

Niiiiice. Thankfully, I’m a Libertarian, not a Dem, so I’m allowed to laugh at that. Or am I supposed to kill you in your sleep? …I never can keep my political-slant responsibilities straight.

We just lost a great morning show because a smaller independant station was bought by Citadel. If you are in the Syracuse, NY area, look for Beaner and Ken on the radio. They just left here and they are great.

BFG are you in the Ventura area?

If so are you still subjected to the mark and brian onslaught?

Really? A libertarian?
I describe myself as a “conseretarian”-conservative libertarian.
And I think you can just laugh. A liberal would throw cowshit at my head, and a commie would try and kill me in my sleep.

It seems like radio is following the same daytime TV news format. Two guys and a babe. Of course theres the duffus that everyone picks on, or try?s to provide some pathetic comic relief.

As my dad used to say…that’s a bunch of crap."

The format is pretty tired, but somehow some hosts can at least make it interesting.

BFG, you’re in SoCal, but not San Diego – I still listen to Dave, Shelley and Chainsaw on 101KGB from San Diego, my old home town, on the internet. I find them amusing, though they are less innovative than they were in the past (I think they’ve been a team show with basically the same folks since at least 1992).

Terumo,

You’re SOL in Nashville – radio there is interesting, especially for a city with the self-granted nickname “Music City”. At least they have Jim Rome now.

For satellite, I just got XM for Christmas – pretty sweet if you want to listen to music. I’m bummed Sirius got the NFL contract, though I can console myself with baseball.

Also, if you’ve got a CD player and are a geek like I am, you can listen to college-level lectures on subjects like literature, philosophy, economics, history, etc. if you order courses on CD from The Teaching Company ( The Great Courses ). The overall cost is pretty good when you consider the number of listening hours in each course.

BB

I’ve listened to the DSC for a long time, and I have to agree with you. They are still pretty funny.

However, their bits are beginning to get a little tired especially the Bromo Golf bets and Lash Wednesday…

Have you a copy of the “J-K Conspiracy DVD?”

If not, PM me your info and I can get a burned copy out to you. It is what it is, but the San Diego city-scapes and finally putting faces with the names is pretty cool.

When you say “conservative,” does that mean that you are a social conservative or a fiscal conservative? Because if it is only the latter, then you are likely a textbook Libertarian.

I guess I could just call myself either a Republican that supports minimal social interference or cheap-ass Democrat.

I’m also beginning to think I’m in the wrong forum. At least if I post here, I don’t have to worry about anyone inviting me to “The Challenge: 2008!”

Clearchannel has ruined morning radio. The only decent show out of Houton was Walton and Johnson, Clearchannel sold their staion and Rock 101 KLOL became TEJANO KLOL. W+J are now based out of New Orleans I’ve heard, still the best damn morning show I’d ever heard, but now no one outside of NO can hear them.
