Poundstone over-trains. Nevertheless, he was just inches away from the 2008 WSM title, before it literally slipped from his grasp. Mariusz? The best STEROID champion ever. Does Big Z use? Only testing would prove it. But at least he doesn’t look like he uses. But though his domination of this era’s circus strongman events is unquestioned, I can’t label him “the strongest man in history”.
Of course, it all comes down to the particular events the organizers stage. That said, I have to believe Louis Uni (Apollon) and Louis Cyr would be as good as anyone in today’s static events. (I guess it helps to be French and be named Louis.) And we know they weren’t using steroids in their time. (Honorable mention to Paul Anderson.) My personal all-time favorite is four-time winner Magnus Ver Magnusson. He always looked like he was having fun.
BTW – I wish they’d bring back Conan’s Wheel and the Hercules Hold to the competition. And the Fingal’s Fingers should always be an event in the finals. No pretenders to the throne on those bad boys.
What is wrong with you? This is one of the most ridiculous posts I’ve seen on here.
Let’s start with the steroid thing with the current competitors. You can be 100% POSITIVE every single competitor is using steroids. There is absolutely no doubt. I didn’t think there was anyone who didn’t know that. I’m pretty sure none of the competitors would even deny steroid use. It’s part of the game. I find it hilarious that you think Z doesn’t ‘look like he uses’. You’re only saying that because he’s not ripped. Drop his bodyfat by about 10 % and you wouldn’t be saying that. His PERFORMANCE looks like he uses. Because he does. A lot.
Second: Why do you HAVE to believe 2 guys named Louis born in the 1800’s would be as good as anyone today? This makes no sense. Maybe they would, but who knows? You have no clue how strong they were, because there’s no way to find ACCURATE records of their size and lifting accomplishments. Strongmen of 100+ years ago were well known to exaggerate claims of strength. Everything on their wikipedia pages looks like lies to me. You also don’t know how those guys would have responded to steroids, which they would certainly need to be competitive with today’s strongmen.
Your hero Magnus used steroids.
All that being said, if I had to pick a ‘strongest man in history’, I think I’d have to go with Z. What he’s done over the last decade is phenomenal.

Ahahaha, this is what I wanted to say to him, but I just was too lazy so I stuck with pancakes and whale breeding.
Did Paul Anderson use steroids? Alas, there was no “accurate” testing in his day, so we’ll never know. Looking through a myopic lens into the past gives a skewed vision of the present. Uni and Cyr were indubitably as strong as anyone performing raw today. However we’re all entitled to name our favorite mythical strongmen. Many of whom ate/eat pancakes. Whale breeding seems much more labor intensive. But perhaps child’s play for a strongman.

QFT.
Though if I were to pick a strongest man in history, he would almost certainly be some anonymous neanderthal.
My favourite strongman, however, is without a doubt Jon Pall Sigmarsson.
There is not “strongest man in history” to be honest. Everyone has their glory to some extent. Their is no telling how you could determine the strongest man on earth, compared to someone like the fastest man on earth.
Some say Andre the Giant (another Frenchman) had the potential to break weightlifting/powerlifting records – perhaps beyond reach. But the money was in “wrestling” and the occasional appearance in a movie. R.I.P.

Anderson may or may not have, but there’s a decent chance he used, based on the years and locations of his prime training. That being said, his best olympic lifts are both about 100 pounds short of current world records, so he obviously wasn’t the best at those. His deadlift is 200 lbs short of the world record, and his 1200 lb squat is just plain false.
How can you say that about Uni and Cyr when you honestly have no idea how much they could actually lift? There are no good records of their feats of strength. Just because you’d like to believe those guys were as strong as Big Z doesn’t make it true. Z would absolutely dwarf either of those guys if they were alive at the same time. I don’t see how you could think those guys were ‘just as strong’.
Staraj are you really 58 years old? How are you so naive and ignorant?
Andre the Giant could barely even move his own massive bodyweight for most of his life he was so weak… He didn’t even fucking lift.
Louis Cyr and Apollon didn’t have steroids and they didn’t have training or diet as good either. They would have absolutely gotten their shit pushed in by any strongman in the last 20 years, and any strongman in the last 20 years couldn’t hold a candle to the likes of Z, Shaw, and Hafthor today. Fucking ask Kaz, he will tell you himself. And Marius wasn’t the greatest anything; he was just the guy who was around when all the actual strongmen went to the IFSA.
Also they ALL use steroids. That’s a fucking given… Good ol’ Magnus still does with the boys over at Jakabol lol.
Anyway thinking that Uni and Cyr would have been anything but lightyears behind today’s competitive strongmen amounts to believing in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. I don’t even know where to begin explaining how wrong you are on this…
Goddamn you are literally going to give me an aneurism.

While the original post is well beyond retarded, a few of you guys go a bit far on your trashing of old time strongmen in my opinion. Some of these guys were legit. First, there is fairly good documentation into quite a few lifts these guys did. I would say that some of Louis Cyr’s lifts are particularly impressive and reliable. That being said, clearly they wouldn’t be competitive among today’s strongmen.
For example, Cyr’s dumbbell clean and press was well documented but wouldn’t have won the Arnold this year. I’m of course going out on a limb and assuming that he couldn’t have done it more than once. I think that’s a pretty safe assumption though. At 5’10", 310, you have to remember that Cyr was a really big guy. This wasn’t some skinny French guy lifting fake weights. That being said, today’s strongmen are freaks. They have much better nutrition, training techniques, and “science” to their advantage.
There was actually a natural guy at worlds strongest man this year!

I competed against him afew months ago in the natural Britains strongest man competition.[/quote]
Well shit, if you competed against him, then you MUST know whether or not he uses performance enhancing drugs when no one else is around. I mean, there’s no way to pass a drug test if you use, obviously. Just look at professional sports and the Olympic games. A bunch of nattys up in there. So if this was a tested competition, he’s clearly 100% natural, without a doubt.
