Wrestling and Creatine?

Hey new to the site but im lovin it. Anyway, point of the post is I got some questions about creatine and what not. First of all, I’ve been wrestling intensly for the past months and I’ve got many more months to go. I’ve also been on a football style lifting program which I think has its ups and downs but when its over I will be starting the westside for skinny bastards. ANYWAY, I want to take creatine both for gaining strength and for muscle recovery. Just a few questions…

  1. Wrestling is a sport of speed and explosiveness, I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced any kind of slowing down from the massive increase in muscle. Im sure I can adjust but I’m just wondering if creatine is to designed for bodybuilding and not for wrestling. I apologize if that sounded ridiculous. I just know that a teammate of mine is on creatine and he is a very slow wrestler and I dont know if its just him or if there is a correlation between the two.

  2. Does anybody have any recommendations for a brandname and a loading program? I’m thinking about purchasing the Cellmass brand and just going with a basic loading phase like recommended.

  3. Im 16 and just wondering if its recommended I wait to start a creatine supplement. Many athletes my age at my school are on creatine but I just want to know if anyone has any thoughts on the topic.

Thanks a million for any advice

Creatine will make you more explosive and faster, as well as increase your strength.

The real question here is will you be able to take it if you have to cut weight (since creatine makes you retain water.)

Generally, I never took creatine because I was worried about retaining water weight, but I remember reading a quote (I think from polliquin?) about simply having his wrestling athletes take creatine over longer periods of time and it wouldn’t be too much a problem.

If you’re a wrestler you won’t want to load (if you’re in season anyway.) In fact you can probably only get away with it in season if you space out servings over a few days.

I always wondered if I would have recovered from practices faster if I knew more about nutrition and had a few grams after practice with some gatorade. Geuss I’ll never find out.

Seasons over for the most part so I dont have to worry about weight till folkstyle again next year. Greco and freestyle dont care all that much. The only concern I have is that it will stunt my growth but again there doesn’t seem to be to much evidence of that.

No, growth stunting is usualy a result of androgen receptors at the growth plates being occupied and signaling to stop growing.

It has been linked to steroid use, but not creatine. Creatine is not a steroid.

Creatine works, but you need to be careful. It may very well make you retain water, and therefore weight. Season’s almost over and you don’t want to miss out.

Also, if you make the decision to do it, don’t be an idiot and tell your teammates or your coach. Many schools, such as the one I coach at, require me to cut a player from the team if he is taking any substance, including protein and creatine.

Dumb, yes, but be aware of the possibility.
