If he can’t make it, can you imagine the monstrosities that will be shw from the russians? Oh man I can’t wait - olympics will be awesome!
Yep, wish I had tickets since this is possibly a once in a life time opportunity for us UKers

Have to agree with the above posters, Misha is incredible but perhaps not known “specifically” as being a top powerlifter for those who do powerlift.

why no olympics? injury? what does this guy do for a day job?
Apparently despite around 200kg snatch he’s still not good enough to make the russian team in his weight class, he said olympics was his dream though.
jesus christ.
I didn’t say it was weak…but come on, without wraps, the world record for 220’s is over 30 lbs more than Misha’s, who weighs 130 lbs more. The SHW class, which of course Misha would fall under, has a WR squat over 180 lbs more than Misha’s. So is it a lot of weight for most people? Yes. Is it super impressive by high level PL standards? No.
I’m not hating on him, I think he’s a tremendous guy. But he’s not gonna be breaking any world records for the squat, or coming very close to it.
Misha won’t be in the olympics because he’s not a great weightlifter. He freely admits to steroid use (his youtube channel) and his doping hasn’t really allowed him to come into international competitions at a competitive strength level, kinda like Pat Mendes.
I do love him though, he’s a great all-round lifter/entertainer and has shown some amazing feats of strength.
with a 460kg total he is a world class weightlifter, definitely medal contention. I doubt ANYONE is going to catch Salimi right now but to say that Misha is crap is a gross misstatement. As far as I know it’s mostly internal politics that kept him out of the team.

His best total is 450kg back in 2005. It’s a very good total, but like I said, he’s never posted any big numbers in an international drug tested competition. I think that is why we aren’t going to be seeing him at the Olympics, because there are other Russian supers (Mogushkov who lifted in Paris, the other guy who won the Euros etc.) who have.

The drug tested world record raw squats (no wraps) for the 275’s and up are STILL 75-100lbs higher than Misha’s squat there…something else to consider. Again, not trying to bash him. But if anyone thinks he’s super effective at squatting for his size, not really.

Do you not think that if he was to focus solely on powerlifting he could improve those numbers if he took his squat wider/less depth?
Somewhat like what Stan Efferding did when he started training at SuperTraining with Mark Bell. Plus, he is coming off an injury.
That’s all well and good, but since he just did a PL meet, he’s naturally going to be compared to other powerlifters (variables aside).

Not necessarily, he could very well be weaker in a wider stance.

Exactly, this is what matters. You can say what if all day long, but this is what happened, end of story.

this is true, but remember, misha is known to be an all around strength athlete, he is not trying to be the best super heavy pl.
though not the best, i dare say his raw pl total is very competitive in the top tier of supers in the pl game, he is very competitive at a high level in OLing, AND strongman.
I posted a vid of him push jerking 600lbs for christ sake, and hang snatching 200kg. fuck.

I’d take his overall badassery in all aspects of strength sports over a little higher meet total any day.
Be cool if someone had some translated interviews with the man himself and his goals, maybe he just wants to be awesome at everything.
The last two numbers posted put him in a very limited group of men…
Lets not forget the premise of this thread was around a powerlifting meet which he did. While his other lifts are extremely impressive, the only thing that matters is what gets passed on the platform in squat, bench and deadlifts for powerlifting.

again, the above is true, lets not argue, point is that even though he does not specifically train for PL, his total, coming of a severe quad tear, though not world beating, is STILL VERY COMPETITIVE at a high level.
that is all we are saying, not that he is one of the best super heavy PL in the world.
