Would This Be Overtraining?

After reading some of the stuff on TBT and G-Flux, I’m more confused than ever about the concept of overtraining. On the one hand, a variety of forms of exercise on a continual basis seems to be optimal for muscular gains and body composition. On the other hand, overtraining can grind gains to a halt and compromise the immune system.

So… would this be overtraining?

Mon, Wed, Fri:

  • Full body workout, alternating between “A” workout and “B” workout (6 exercises, different exercises for A/B workouts)

Tuesday, Thursday, Friday

  • 1 hour cycling (commute to/from work)

Saturday, Sunday

  • 1-2 hours indoor rock climbing

Something tells me I’ll get really fit from this, but I feel the need to run it past the T-Nation “common sense filter” first… :stuck_out_tongue:

If you don’t go overboard with intensity on the bike commute, you should be ok.

Make sure to eat!

Overtraining is a highly individual thing, and really depends on your recovery. Are you getting enough sleep, food, etc? If you cycle three days a week as a stone mason (or other highly physical job), you probably are used to a larger amount of work. Then again, this could be just enough to knock you over the edge.

If you can keep up with the workout, and make progress, if you are sleeping well and eating enough, if, if, if.

Try it out. See how it works.

It’s all personal, and will depend on your nutrition, rest, stress, previous training, genetics, etc…

You can’t look at a workout regime and say whether or not the user will overtrain. If you perform your workouts with half-assed intensity then you won’t overtrain no matter how often you do it. Genetics, AAS usage, stress, sleep quality, etc. etc. all factor in as well.

The best advice is to start out with a moderate program and increase some parameter(s) [intensity/frequency/volume/rest interval] until you start to experience overtraining symptoms, then back off a bit. That will put you in the optimum range for success without risking overtraining.

Overtraining symptoms include: general lethargy, muscular weakness, poor sleep, large loss (or gain) in appetite, lack of training desire.

uh try it. duh. you won’t know until you try it for a couple of weeks. oh and don’t worry about overtraining, you will probably be overreaching not overtraining. just take a week rest if you start to feel like crap. you only overtrain by overreaching for a long period of time.
