The first one does look fake, but there are no obvious digital signs, and considering the strange angle the photo was taken, its could be real.

These pictures still impress me. as a kid, I thought it was a drawing! but if you check Johhny Jackson, it becomes clear that what’s missing today are small waists!

I’m sure even Arnold’s waist was bigger back when he was powerlifting. Arnold had a small waist but he also didn’t have a back and legs like today’s pros.

True, that’s part of the deal. Personally, I’d prefer his proportions to the modern standard (which sux, with my wide waist…). A large chest-waist ratio creates a dramatic physique, more than 35" thighs…

You see those same proportions on the NPC level with bigger quads.
The truth is, if people wanted to pay to see that, then NPC contests would pull in the most money.
That is why all of this talk about finding that look more favorable will always fall on deaf ears.
No one is going to pay money to fly to Vegas to see some guy who weighs 220lbs win an Olympia.
Sorry.

Interesting point. So, there is bodybuilding, and Olympia-style mass building?
EDIT: meaning, since NPC contests have, each, just a few aesthetics-style physiques, there may be Olympia-form and Olympia-size? Wheeler loosing to Coleman was a bad day for the sport, IMO.

It’s not so much that. The NPC level is the step right before going pro. Phil Heath won that weighing about 216lbs on stage (he looked like he weighed 230+). As amazing as he looked then, did anyone here pay attention?
Were there several threads about how awesome he looked at 216?
Nope.
Fastforward a few years and now he is a mass monster. Now, everyone is talking about him and now he is making real money.
That is why it is a given that most of the people claiming guys from the 60’s looked the best are likely not even fans of the sport as it stands and as such have no sway over public opinion since their dollars aren’t going towards anything that would promote that ideal.
It is simple dollars and cents.
If all of you REALLY thought that look was the epitome of bodybuilding, NPC shows would sell out and the Olympia would pass with a whisper.
The reality is, no one is going to skip work and fly to Vegas to see a 216lb’er win an Olympia.
They come to see something they’ve never seen before.
The Olympia has ALWAYS been about the freaks. Arnold was a FREAK back then. Sergio was a FREAK back then. That is why Serg had all of his sleeves slit down the sides…BECAUSE THEY DIDN’T MAKE CLOTHES FOR GUYS LIKE THAT THEN.
That is why I laugh at the comments about how much everyone supposedly loves the physiques of the 60’s…because the dollars just don’t add up…and truthfully, if the guys saying it couldn’t even name 5 CURRENT Olympia or NPC competitors off the top of their head, then their opinion means much less than they think it does.
Why would anyone care about the opinion of people who aren’t helping the sport grow at all?

Like someone else posted, I would have to SEVERELY disagree. Find me one guy with a more massive chest than Markus Rhul. Arnold also is inhaling and sticking his rib cage out in that photo. That’s not ALL the result of the muscle because the statagy then was to stick your rib cage out as far as possible to make your chest look bigger.
Today’s pro’s look like that without the inhale-tactic.
Johnny Jackson isn’t sticking his rib cage out in that photo like Arnold is in this one.

I was talking about his pecs specifically. That 2nd pic I posted shows him with his back to the audience - his abs are flexed which probably means he’s also tensing up all his back muscles for the crowd. The fact that his pecs look like HUGE slabs of meat hanging on his ribcage (even in a back pose) is a testament to the man’s superior pecs.
Arnolds pecs may well be #1 of all time, surely top 5. They look bigger comparatively though, because his shoulders arent much compared to today’s guys.
It’s all an illusion.
imho, this discussion would come to a quick halt if we could put Arnold next to some of these guys on stage right now. Put him next to Markus at the 2002 Night of Champions, and who would even NOTICE Arnold. lol

That’s serious superhero shit right there.
I lied, that’s very likely taken during pre contest training. Sue me
…so how many Austrian Schnitzels can this make?
what would happen Arnold, Zane and Franco had access to hammerz strength? the sky is the limit
