Worried About Cholesterol

I??m 20 years old and have been bulking for 5 months now. My diet is heavy in steak and chicken and pretty much any other meat I can get my hands on. I do this because of the low amount of carbs and the high amount of protein found in meat. However, how much is too much? The other day I noticed I??m getting some bumps under my eyebrow but above my eye, and apparently that can be a sign your cholesterol is too high.

Well, this may sound a bit too simplistic, but regular blood lipid profiles (say every 3-5 years) is a good idea, even starting in your 20’s and even for someone with no family history of CHD or high cholesterol.

So, go get a blood test.

Exactly. Instead of worrying about it, find out exactly what it is. I did, and plan on getting a blood test done every year to make sure my high fat/low carb diet is still healthy for me. I’ve been on this type of diet since June, and my cholesterol is 144.

It depends on the person.

Pretty sure there is not a lot of cholesterol in chicken, right? Dunno about steak.

Go to the doctors and get your cholesterol tested. Simple as that. People metabolize food differently. People in my family tend to have high cholesterol if they go on a diet like yours. I eat oatmeal almost everyday because I want to keep it in check. That being said, I plan to get my cholesterol tested in a month or so to see how my new diet is effecting my body.

I eat whole eggs, steak, bacon, and dark chicken meat (almost exclusively from local, pasture-based farms – gotta love the Triangle) every day. While I don’t give a shit what my cholesterol levels are, I’m sure they are within normal ranges. Or, at least, what was once considered normal before the $100 billion statin industry came along and suddenly everyone had deadly cholesterol levels.

I think you should worry about the quality of your food before you start worrying about some meaningless number whose only purpose is to be used as a scare tactic for the chronically misinformed.

If you are like most people cholesterol in your food does only influence your blood level by 2-3%, e.g. not at all.

There seems to be a minority of around 20% who do react to cholesterol they eat.

If cholesterol is even a indicator of anything still remains to be seen, see

“The Great Cholesterol Con” by Antony Colpo

The title of and advertising for the book insinuate a certain hyperbole and/or lack of scientific approach on his part but that impression is wrong.

Plus, you learn a lot about how completely stupid ideas make it into the mainstream and forever stay there as articles of faith.

Worried about cholesterol? Me too. Low cholesterol IS something you should worry about. Low cholesterol levels have been associated with depression, anxiety, irritability and alzheimers, for starters. And low cholesterol gives you trouble building muscle, (which is quite understandable since it is the precursor to all steroid hormones):

Well put.

Every meal that has meat should also have a solid fiber source, if it’s a low carb one, green veggies.

Echoing some previous posts, if you’re worried, get a blood test. That being said…

The ratio of HDL/LDL is of far more importance to overall cardiac health than total cholesterol. Further:

Keeping your triglyceride level low is of far more importance to overall cardiac health than total cholesterol and HDL/LDL levels.

I think fishoil has been found to lower cholesterol levels.
