World's Strongest Man

Well SWR in Powerlifting some people have longer legs etc, there is no way of compensating. In worlds strongest man they just try to pick an assortment of events that test as many aspects of strength as possible. This is how they make it fair. They can’t really try to make one tall man event and then one small man event.

There was an article in Sports Illustrated quite a while back about the worlds strongest man competition. It said the reason they hold it in other countries is because of all the legalities about if someone got injured. It also said almost every one of those guys admits to steroid use, except for Magnus Samuelsson. He was the only one who said he didn’t so it and most of the other guys believed him because he’s such a purist. Who was the big ex-shot putter that beat Marius last year denying him his three peat? Yeah. I was really rooting for “Stumpy” Rhaymes. I am the same height, so it was a huge shock to see this little guy in the competition too. Makes me think: “Hmm. Now all I need to do is gain 100lbs and get to a 750lb deadlift!”.

I had a roomate for one year in college who was from Ireland, he was a big sumbitch - actually one of the people who got me into serious lifting, anyway he went to the highland games every year and said that Magnus and a few other WSM characters were there most years and that all of these guys would fly off the handle in the pub a couple of times over the term of the week or so they were there. I’m not saying Magnus did use steriods - he might just have enjoyed throwing stools and overturning tables in the pub.
Is the last sentence of your post to be taken at face value, or are you being sarcastic? I don’t always recognize sarcasm over the internet, but if you ARE being sarcastic, and you ARE saying that getting drunk and doing crazy shit like that in the bar is actually a roid rage … I would say that I have several friends who do that exact type of thing, and they dont even work out, let alone juice.

Yah, take it at face value, tone does not translate well over the internet, so I try to avoid it. God knows any number of us have done a lot of stupid shit like that after drinking a little too much.

Just a quick note: I met and trained with Kevin Nee one afternoon here in AZ. He is very articulate, humble and DAMN strong. He was willing to take time to help out an amateur female strongman (myself) without acting like it was an imposition. I think he will go far, nice to see him in action on the WSM. Gotta love those marathon sessions

Don’t know why the first one didnt go through, I’ll try it again. This was a story from august of '99, I believe Lavar Arrington was on the cover right before his senior year at penn state started. They also mentioned that it’s generally accepted that philippi doesnt juice, with his rationale being that he coaches ncaa athletes, so how could he use and then turn around and tell his kids not to use?

Are you guys actually talking about what WSM competitors use steroids???

And there’s always the internet jockey who thinks steroids just make you strong. As if these guys wouldn’t be strong without them.

No one said they wouldn’t be strong without them. Other than the one guy who asked about mariusz’ cycle, i dont think anyone on this thread’s asked about a specific cycle. And nobody’s sat here and accused anyone who’s said they are natural of lying. Nevertheless, strongman is untested and it’s pretty much don’t ask, don’t tell. You train with nee, and nobody’s asking you “is he natural?” or “what’s his cycle?” I haven’t because personally, I dont care.

By “Freak Show” Marunde meant Mariusz, I suppose? Was that said in friendly terms or otherwise?
I don’t know where Marunde gets off being arrogant-- he’s been in the sport for four or five years and hasn’t done jack shit, really. If the sport were united, there’s no way he’s on that podium, even given the fact that this year’s contest overwhelmingly favored his 6’6" frame.
That said, it is fun to watch him destroy the Fingers, and he’s a fairly smart competitor as well. Watch him push jerk overhead events rather than the normal strongman push press. It shows you how a little reseach and work with other (specifically olympic lifting) techniques can improve your strongman events. He’s even said himself that he’d never place as high as he does in the overhead events if he “brute forced” it up like some of the other guys.

Right enough why don’t more of the competitors use a push jerk type action? Who can’t push jerk more than they can overhead press?

Do a search on his name. His workout IS posted on his website. The guy trains like 7-8 hours a day. He’s a monster.

I was talking about his 'roid cycle, definitely necessary given the workouts he does.
Sorry man, my bad.

Marius is no where near 6’3.

Jesse is still fairly young. Most of the young guys are all on the cocky side.

Yeah, all those pussies on TV are cocky… Those huge motherfuckers aint got shit on me!

They don’t know how and aren’t willing to learn, most of the time. Some guys are finally starting to do it though.

Jesse actually comes from a very solid O-lifting background. I believe he’s power snatched a little over 350, IIRC. Something close to that in kilos in any case.

350 kilos snatch? no way you meant kilograms. What does iirc stand for? Maybe thats why I can’t believe it.

I thought I saw Mariusz’s height as 6’1" on the WSM show, shorter than some for sure. Watching him squat is amazing though. It’s like he’s not using any weight at all. The guy is a freak show, but I mean no disrespect. The best in almost any field is a freak.

I am excited to see Kevin Nee keep going in his career. With experience he could be awesome. I remember seeing him on MTV, he’s come a good ways since then for sure.

Filiou is a mountain. I’m curious to see how well he does too. And what is up with Gatineau, Quebec? Hugo Giraard is from there too. Two gigantic men from the same little town? Weird. I’ve been there, I never anyone like them. Maybe it’s the water…

I thou8ght Marunde did pretty well. I just saw a video of him at Marunde-Muscle.
I was impressed by the chinups, the bar looks pretty thick! Cool to see.

This is the only sporting event I really watch, forget playoffs.
