World's Strongest Man General Discussion

Looks like event 3 is done. Some of the groups are still really tight, more than I seem to remember in previous WSM. Group 2 the entire field is separated by 3 points. Groups 3 and 5 are still close enough in the top 3 that anyone could pull out the win. Groups 1 and 4 look to be the only groups where someone has pretty much locked down the win.

Really surprised but so happy to see big Terry doing well. Fingers crossed he makes the finals.

Newest development: last man standing stone over bar is now an 8 stone series, still winner takes all, regardless of points going in. Planning ahead really isn’t these guys’ strong suit, but I guess that’s nothing new…

Isn’t that half the appeal of the sport?

Still just between 2 and3?

The farmer’s walk was a 10? meter event, meaning they have to go from the start to finish before they’re allowed to drop (in the “safe” zone) for the turn around. If a competitor drops it in the middle, it ends immediately and the final distance is measured.

The overall time limit is only for those who can keep going the entire time from one end to the other.

I competed all through the 2000’s, all over the US, in a lot of Nationals and ProAms. Handles were smooth and slightly larger than an Olympic bar diameter (1/16" larger, IIRC). Everywhere. All the same. Based on the implements from WSM. Torn hands happened to me only once, in Indiana, because they left the handles in direct sun and steel wooled them between competitors. The callous cooked to the handles and tore off as soon the handle moved, which is essentially on the pick. Blood and dime sized chunks of flesh everywhere, from everyone. I never tore one because of holding the handle too long, and I never saw anyone else do that either. They happen, but how long you hold the implement isn’t a factor. Something with a knurl is way more likely to cause a problem.

6 reps in the deadlift was very mediocre. I’d be very surprised if Shaw wins the whole thing. He’s lucky they took Novikov out of his group (rightly so, it was way too stacked otherwise).

6 is definitely mediocre. It’s just a question of did he hit 6 and stop because he thought he had won (Hollands won the farmers and thus probably went after him)? Or did he spend the whole time to grind out 6 and couldn’t get another if he had tried?

I am guessing he was taking it easy but it may back fire.

Watch the frame carry. Several guys tear their hands. Hollands says it was the thin handles.

Farmer’s Walk is not Frame Carry. It’s a difference in implements a universe wide. It also would have had a lot more to do with Frame Width than handle thickness. No one spends much time worrying about torn hands on FW, especially as it was a fairly standard form of it, not actually max distance. They don’t even have to do a turn anymore.

Apparently yes.

Changing the stone off format in my opinion means Tom Stoltman is a lock for the finals now since he is the WR holder in stones. If he has to win a stone off, it won’t mean he has to go for an hour to beat Trey Mitchell LOL.

Definitely may backfire. I just think it’s more of a strategic miscalculation than an assessment of Shaw’s physical preparedness.

That may be that it’s more of a frame issue. I’ve never torn my hands on a carry implement. I just have seen it happen so assume it has to be a consideration.

I watched the Frame Carry you posted, carefully. Their hands are really out to the sides to grip those handles, so when the weak hand slips a little it would shift the whole frame cause tears. Independent handles like FW allow a much better arm position and a better set for the grip on the pick. A huge advantage to wider guys or longer arms.

Is group 3 miscounted? Total and sum columns are different in that group but the same everywhere else.

Looks like the same “mistake” for group 2.

Just assume the actual results from each event are correct, and add up your own numbers I guess.
