Working Out When Sick.

Do you workout when your sick? My buddy and I are having a debate. If I’m sick (still able to function sick) I still work out. I tend to get over my sickness a lot quicker by doing that. My buddy on the other hand does not. He says working out makes him sicker. What does everyone else think. I basically want to know if I’m justified in calling him a wimp for blowing off our workouts while a little under the weather.

I think your buddy super smart by waiting a week until he feels better. They say if it’s a head cold, go ahead and work out. If it’s a chest cold then take a break until your better. Not to mention spreading your sickness at the gym is not cool!

Well this is a nice timed thread since I am just getting back to working out after a week off sick (and I was off several days last week due to vacation … nothing like catching “the sick” during your vacation). Normally I am of the same mind as you … if your just a little down go ahead and hit the iron, however that is just for general sniffles and a slightly sore throat. For more serious stuff you have to take some down time.

Currently I am just starting to get over a nasty sinus infection which laughes in the face of antibotics. For 3 days I was so stuffed up my head was about to explode (obviously squatting in this condition was tempting fate).

Also once back in college I got Strep throat and worked out despite feeling like ass … the result a 105 tempature (cause I couldn’t sweat) and some muscle seizures - Yeah that the suck. So to sum up … minor stuff go ahead and push on through. But anytime your down hard I think working out makes ya worse.

I think it depends on your specific illness and your own personal body. I get ill a fair amount and actually have been conjested a lot the past week or two. I cough up shit like none other and it takes away from my cardiovascular endurance, but working out helps loosen it up so I continue to do it. In that respect it definitely helps!

But then if you’ve got a bad fever and get frequent body temp. changes, then maybe it’s not such a good idea. I think this is a very situational decision, but for most of your lesser-illnesses/common cold type stuff I would say it helps.

No I agree. My question was for minor stuff like colds or just being under the weather. My buddy is still able to come to work and make softball practice. Now for fevers, vomiting, the Flu etc. stay home.

i have figured out from trial and error that you probly shouldnt work out if your really sick, because your so weak when your sick you mad eno progress anyway. and it just pisses you off how bad you did. plus you just feel shittyer and try to prevent yourself from throwing up the whole time.

you cant workout whne your sick its as simple as that. having a cold isnt being sick in my oppinion. i dont see how anyone would question not working out with a cold lol

My cure for a runny nose: Heavy squats.

Blow out through the nostrils. Wipe with tissue.

You’re buddy went to softball because he didn’t want to let the team down, he went to work because he didn’t want to let his family and co-workers down. Both of which probably prolonged his suffering.

What a trooper!

If it’s a fever, no. Anything else, yes.

You said in an earlier post that an excuse for not going would be not wanting to get the gym sick. Wouldn’t that hold true for work and Softball. I think my buddy needs to Man Up!

So the consensus seems to be. If you are just a little under the weather, like a cold, Work out. But if you are really sick, like vomiting or fever, Don’t.

Cool, I’m justified in calling my buddy a P**s.
