Wine, Whisky, Libations

I justify it by reminding myself I would be paying $30 for three beers, if I was at a bar.

Any strong porter or stout and I am in!

This lovely tipple called Carraig Dubh Porter is from West Kerry in southern Ireland, brewed way out in the sticks and its bloody gorgeous! You’d take your time drinking porter like this, it’s a very deep, dark chocolatey, coffee flavoured drink worth the few extra quid if you can find it that is!

PabstAmerican Pale Ale, not bad.

Tonight I’m sipping on “Even More Jesus” Stout (12% ABV) from Evil Twin Brewing. Heavy on the coffee & chocolate profile but pleasantly not as bitter as some of the coffee stout/porter genre. Endorsed.

How noticeable is the alcohol? High ABV stouts (like above 9%) tend to get a little too sweet for my taste.

I’ll put it on my list though for sure.

Good point - yes, it is on the sweet side, and that’s something I’ve noticed with the really high ABV stouts as well. I actually like that but acknowledge it’s more of a personal taste. The Irish stouts that I’ve tried (Breckenridge, Murphy’s, one other that I can’t remember the name of) are a lot less flavorful, IMO, but if you don’t like that extra sweetness it may run more to your taste.

What I’ve been trying to do is buy “singles” of things that are new to me (that way I’m not stuck with a sixpack of something I don’t like!) before going in on a four- or six-pack.

Worth a try either way. I don’t mind “on the sweet side,” but I don’t like sweet beer.

Just bought a couple packs of the 120 IPA. $36 for a 4 pack and worth every penny.

How’s the carbonation? I’ve never had the 120.

Little fat lamb brewery ciders and beer
Not sure if its outsourced overseas but its a 500ml bottle with 4 standard drinks in it
Personally enjoy the ginger beer flavour, and at $3.80 a bottle at the local bottle-o, it gets you sober to shit faced very quickly

The carbonation is on the lighter side, similar to a porter or a stout. It’s very different from other IPAs.

Anyone tried the Allagash White ale?

I’ve enjoyed a few of these recently.

I’ve had it a few times … not bad, not bad.

Seeing I can’t drink beer due to allergies I stick to cider or spirits.
Fav cider for ages is Mercury Draught, nice and dry, good alcohol % and fairly cheap, just under 50 bucks a slab.
For Scotch, can’t go past a bottle of Chivas Regal

Another thing we have in common besides baseball. I love beer but can’t drink it due to brewers yeast allergy. It’s only gotten worse over the years too. It’s a real shame because I live in a mecca of craft brewing.

Whiskey: Like several of you, I’m a big fan of Booker’s. There’s a brewery in my town called Dry Fly and they make a terrific wheat whiskey. The also make a port finished wheat whiskey that might be my favorite. They age the regular wheat whiskey for two years in a regular barrel, oak I think, then they “finish” it with another year in a port wine barrel. I’ve only bought two bottles because it’s so darn expensive. Buffalo Trace is my favorite widely available, not too expensive whiskey.

Tequila: If push came to shove, I’d probably take tequila over whiskey. It’s better in mixed drinks (I like margaritas - I know not very TN of me) and usually pretty smooth.

Wine: I’ve tried to acquire a taste but never managed that feat.

Pot: I don’t use it in the typical way but I’ve become an insomniac in the last five years and I’ve found a pot based sleep aid called Deeper Sleep works better than anything else I’ve tried so far.

Had myself a Yuengling Black & Tan last night. Not bad. The blend of porter and lager melded surprisingly well.

Also, thanks to an internet search, I learned that while there’s nothing wrong with the name Black & Tan on this side of the pond, you should order it by the name “half and half” in Ireland.

You and me both. There are so many great breweries/brewers here. Fortunately, there are some good ciders and spurs here. Both 2towns and 1819 have some good ones, if they are available up there.

How’s your team looking?

I’ll have to look this up. I’ve enjoyed a local, to Bend, Otis Weber that is a wheat as well

The team is not looking good so far. We’ve only had two practices but very poor turn-out. If the team doesn’t come together, I’m ok with it. Spokane is hosting the National Master’s Track & Field Championship this summer. I’ll be fine with skipping baseball and just getting ready for that track meet.

haha, yeah, definitely don’t go around Ireland talking about how much you love the Black and Tans…

El Guapo from O’connor Brewing co is excellent. I had some recently when I was in Norfolk VA. Dangerously smooth and drinkable. 6’r after a brutal Squat session was awesome. Definitely on my Cinco De Mayo list.
