I wouldn’t call what Rippetoe does squatting…

Um… (was that a joke that I missed?)
What would you call it?
What he was hinting at was the fact that Rippetoe goes ass first and puts a shit ton of strain on the hip. That’s something I don’t like either (for instance, emulating Dave Tate’s death squat feat, at rep 21 or 22 I would definitely start feeling some strain in my lower back from using too much hip).
That’s one of the reasons why I prefer to front squat because that way I can ensure a flat back and prevent excessive forward tilt.

His “squatting technique” is idiotic and he’s a moron.
I apparently don’t have enough guys in my gym who squat 315 with perfect form for me to learn from, because aside from being a LITTLE ass-first on the upward drive, those seemed like reasonably clean reps to me. LL, what was so “idiotic” about his form?
I don’t think LL has a clue . And I doubt he actually squats . Rippetoe has Bern doing this for over 30 years . Jim Wendler seems to like what he does . The last time I saw Jim was two months ago at Steve Pulcinella’s seminar and he was using some of Rippetoe’s stuff.
The “correct” way is normally the same way here with some possible variations due to differences in anatomy and some technique cues.

Same here.
I used to religiously back squat but recently switched to front squat because for the life of me I could not stop tilting forward on BS’s. Hip strain and lower back injuries were inevitable.
I also get far, far better leg development from front squat.
And for some reason, the front squat just feels like a more natural movement for me. I dunno why but back squats have always felt awkward and clumsy for me but I took to front squats with a smile.
When Wendler squatted heavy, his technique was completely different than what Rip preaches. I’ve never seen anyone that squats like Rip move any significant weight without later suffering some kind of back injury.
Rip is a moron. He’ll talk about how SS bars and trap bars aren’t effective, and then teach beginners ridiculous squat form.
For someone who has 30 years of “experience”, his most significant contribution is a bare bones basic program for beginners that any regular poster on this site could come up with in their sleep.
If you don’t agree with me, call Iron Sport Gym in Glenolden, PA and ask Steve if he will teach you how to squat like Rip. Haha.

And if you ask Steve about that seminar, he will tell you what Jim was a huge disappointment.
LL not to be a dick but your argument is for us to verify with another power lifter that is not at the level of reputation of the two you have a problem with? How does that win this discussion?

That was for Tom. He was using a seminar he saw at Steve’s gym to support Rippetoe, and Steve is not a fan of Rip’s squat form.
I didn’t mean to hijack the thread…
From a recent conversation - Steve has a lot of respect for jim, but does not agree with his recent shift in mentality. He has recently started preaching more about cardio, and called some of the PLers fat. Plers make up the majority of Iron Sports clientele, and they weren’t excited about Jim’s presentation.

Jim is going through change in his life. I dont know how old you are but I am going through the same things as Jim is. He is done with PL in the competition since and is now wanting to live longer and healther. Hard to argue the fact that the heavy weight PL’rs are the picture of health and longevity.

I don’t disagree with the health and longevity part. I’ve been training for 14+ years and find myself doing more maintenance every day. From monthly ART treatments to less frequent heavy days, I have made many changes myself. Quality of life is important to consider when thinking about training long term.
Steve’s commentary really wasn’t relevant to the thread, but I thought I would put it up for reference.
I really didn’t want to get into a thread-jack here. I just don’t agree with Rips squat technique.
Back on the original topic,
I squat because it is the one exercise that truely transformed my body, and of course the ass compliments…
^ Agreed, and I will say that his technique is not what I would use as an example to a newb. But I know that everyone has different body comps and so nobody looks exactly the same when DL or Squating.
