Do you think America is low in envy? ![]()
I donāt know, but I lived in London for almost a year (work placement), got some friends etc. Maybe itās because I lived there for a while, but it seemed to me that the people there were more friendly and holding more together⦠or I was just lucky, donāt know. I would love to go back there, but un/fortunately I have some commitments here (family, friends, good workā¦) ![]()
Shanghai is just the BEST city IMO- convenience to the max+ culture/history+ family+ FOOD
Iām also loving Pittsburgh- IDK why though, canāt pinpoint any particular reason. Probably b/c CMU has been so amazing

It does look good from a lot of angles!
The actual city is an interesting mix of green space and concrete jungle. Having miles of river edge is a neat and creates a lot of interesting features.
I did a little bike ride along a few trails a couple months ago. The bike/walking trail network through town is pretty neat. I too am a few hundred yards from bike trail that goes all over the place called the Rails to Trails. Locally they spider web the region, and a couple of connectors run all the way into Maryland, Philly, DC, etc.
Out into the suburban sprawl it becomes a mix of housing plans, woods and parks, then quickly turns to farms. I can catch the street car into town (right next to the bike trail) or go mushroom hunting in old growth oaks within a 5 min. walk.
It grows on people.
The weatherās been exceptional- not what I expected at all. Canāt complain
Wait for itā¦

This isnāt bad right now. It can swing pretty radically though in a couple months. Sunny and mid 50ās to below zero and back within the week.
I donāt mind temperature change, storms or snow. I just canāt stand drizzly, all day rain (ie seattle or Shanghai during āyellow plumflower (mold)ā season
That was last year. This year was dry.
Last year broke records. Ridiculously good shrooming. Everything else was screwed though.
I almost didnāt apply to CMU because of this- turns out I got lucky⦠again⦠one day thatās going to run out⦠BUT Iāll squeeze every bit of utility out of my streak until it ends
I live in a small town in Western Australia.
I like it because I live in town and there is no need for me the travel anywhere by car as everything is walking distance. At the moment there is heaps of work for me and work is only a 5 minute walk from my penthouse on the beach. This time saved from commuting means I can gym 3-4 times a week and train BJJ 2-3 times a week. I used to work in the city and commuted in the car for a total of 10 plus hours a week.
Downsides are is that been in a smaller town means that there isnāt that much to do on the social scene. Iāve visited every restaurant, been to every bar and pub. Weather is great, but it is very windy for 4 months of the year. I used to be involved in football (soccer) for most of my life, but due to the smaller population and small migrant population, there isnāt much football here and I am no longer involved.
Iāve been here for about 5 years now, and I am starting to think that itās time to move on.

I live about 10 miles away from Hull (Yorkshire, England).
Itās ok, busses about every half hour, some shops (though a bit pricy), lots of chavs in Hull, but I find most chavs are pretty harmless. Itās not perfect, but their are much worse places to live.
Iāve lived in the Dallas/ft worth area of Texas my whole life but if I had my choice I would live in Southern California but I prefer to own a home and that would not be possible there.
Proās about dfw tx
No income tax
The weather is good most of the time. I canāt stand cold weather!
Homes are affordable
Lots of pretty women (it was real important when I was single)
It gets hot! And I love hot!
In my field jobs have been easy to find.
Cons
Property taxes are too damn high
Iām a liberal person living in a red state.
Too many people try to push their religion on you(Iām atheist)
Hail storms in the spring .
Most of the public schools suck.
Many foundation issues with the expansive soil.
Electric prices are too damn high.
It looks gorgeous. Did you take the picture?
This is Hamilton at night. Because we are on the Niagara Escarpment half the city is āon the mountainā and half is below. There are multiple access points top to bottom and five sets of stairs. One set is a block from our house. 500 steps to get to the top.
This is that set of steps.
This is the night time view from the top.
This is a great thread; hearing about different places and positive views of them.
Nah. I just grabbed it off of Google.
Yours looks very neat and orderly. Iāve always admired that in a city. Being not nearly as good at navigation as Iād like to think, I canāt find my way around oneās like the 'burgh or normal ones like that.
There used to be tons of those around the city too, but I think they are being phased out for lack of use/cost. In a few of the older neighborhoods that was the only way to get to a lot of places.
I travelled by car for a total of 15 to 20 hours per week for half a year. ![]()
Iām aware of the unicorn situation
I live an hour away from the birthplace of FLOTUS.
I ski for half the year and swim in the sea or a lake for the other half. There are many great MTB trails around, one of them starting literally from my backyard. Both the nature and the food is amazing.
For reference, it looks a lot like the hills of southern Pennsylvania or West Virginia.
Everything is extremely close for American standards - sometimes when I wake up early on a Saturday I hop on my motorbike and in forty minutesā time Iām sipping cappuccino on a piazza in Italy.
Itās often that I take my kids to the beach after school, especially late in the spring.
Almost no violent crime but absurdly high taxes and spectacular levels of corruption.
If you have a job or a source of income that is not dependent on the local economy, then itās an amazing place to live.
That has to be annoying.
