Why Do People Use Religion to Hide Bigotry?

I have no problem whatsoever with Christians like you who believe in separation of church and state. People should be able to believe whatever the hell they want, as long as they don’t legislate their beliefs on others.

However, not all Christians believe in separating church and state. They feel justified creating laws that reflect their religious beliefs, because they’re convinced those laws are from god, and hence must be good for everyone to follow.

That’s why religious social conservatives like Michelle Bachmann and Rick Perry scare me. They would create laws that directly impact me in a negative way, based on their religious convictions.

Most Christians are for separation of Church and state contrary to what you may think. Bachmann has no chance.
I hope you’re right, and agree that increasingly this is becoming the case in our country. People are more willing to live and let live, especially when they’re struggling with real issues like a sucky economy that affect them personally.

Looking at the current lineup, a papally appointed Duke doesn’t seem like such a bad idea

Yeah, they’ll force baptize our childen and kidnap like the papal states, too!

Perry is explictedly against the nanny-stated and has stated his goal is to make Washington irrelevant to the lives of the average citizen.

That means you would be, under a Perry adminstration even more free to abandon your children and other responsibilities in your never-ending quest to fill your anus with foreign objects.

If you truly wanted “equal” rights (instead of special rights and the ability to force your lifestyle choices on others), you’d support small government candidates.

The non-christians that have posted here so far (not all of you, but many) certainly do not sound like paragons of non-bigotry, from where I’m sitting. I’d fear for my safety if some of you guys were in the majority.
Really, it’s like we are pointing a gun at them and saying YOU MUST BELIEVE! They have free will so go be non-believers. What part about being a non believer gives you the right to constantly attack Christians? Some of you go at it as if it’s your job. It’s almost like their just a tad bit insecure about their decision.

Well, I can tell you I debate here because I’m used to debating competitively. I was actually hopping there would be more political debates, but hey religion is what I got.

This made me laugh, “fill your anus with foreign objects.”

http://blogs.cbn.com/beltwaybuzz/archive/2011/08/04/perry-comfortable-with-support-of-marriage-abortion-constitutional-amendments.aspx

How is wanting to change the constitution by defining marriage equal to a small government?

Granted, it could never happen. Even if it could get the votes in Congress, it would still need the ratification of 38 States.

Really silly when I read all the crap about additional constitutional amendments. Very difficult to pass in a country as divided as ours is.

However, this is the sort of rhetoric that the far right loves to hear.

Well, in fairness, you’re no worse than a man who abandons his wife and children because “she doesn’t understand him” and he wants to chase a young girl in a skirt.

You just happened to betray your children because you are gay.

Same thing, really.

How would lifestyle choices be forced upon others?
You mean like baptizing children into a faith in which they have no choice? Is that what you mean? You mean like making your kids go to special schools to lean about fables and disregard science? You mean like knocking on peoples doors and handing out literature? You mean by beheading and stoning non-believers? Is that what you mean? You mean by going out into the streets and calling all normal people blasphemers? If that is what you are refering to than you are right.

You mean like refusing to take a child to be baptized? To grow up being shaped by atheistic views, indirectly or directly?
You mean like making kids go to public schools to learn about homosexuality and how to roll a condom down an erect penis?
You mean like trying to wipe out long held local celebrations, customs, and traditions?
You mean by throwing believers into prisons, or just plain plain shooting them, for some scientific utopia (see militant/state atheism)?
You mean like being a driving mindset behind the ongoing mass murder we call abortion?
You mean coming onto a public forum (street) to call religious (normal people) bigots and so on?

What did you hope to accomplish? Did you think sharing some whiny persecution-complex was going to set off a crises of faith? Homosexuality is a sin, get over it. Adultery is a sin, get over it. Don’t believe so? Boo-friggen-hoo. Don’t have a strong atheistic community, civic institutions, any good atheistic hymns, or weekly spirit-moving get togethers? Too bad. We have ours. And, if we prefer to help out Christian businesses by favoring them, we will. Cry me a river about it. If you want to maximize your profits, you’ll shut up and take their money. We’re not going to unravel our communal ties, in helping a brotha out, just so you’re not butt-hurt about it. Get your own civic society, or learn to shut up and appreciate ours while not being forced to be one of us for every little damn thing.

And yeah, that’s why you got jumped on, the whiny post. “OOOOOH, I can’t introduce myself as an AAAAAATHEIST, to my christian customers, ughhhhhh.” Yes, you can. Is there a point to doing it while conducting business for profit? No. But, you still could. You think I ever started up on republicanish talking points when some customer made a progressive/democrat friendly comment? Never.

Yeah of course. If you believe in that Jesus crap I know whatever I do (not that I try) your mind will stay shut. But don’t you ever tell my wife what to do with her body and don’t you ever enforce your law based on your faith on me. I don’t know why I am wasting time here
fattymcfatso wrote:

Well, let’s read this month’s headlines:

Attempts to criminalize infant circumcisions in San Fransico (repleat with a gay aryan comic book hero “foreskin man” leading the charge)

Forcing Roman Catholic Adoption Centers to serve gay couples

Forcing Roman Catholic/Protestant/Jewish Hospitals to perform abortions

Forcing Objecting Doctors to perform abortions in medical training

From Canada, arresting various Christian preachers for expressing their views (in their church) on homosexuality

On this forum, you had a gay PE teacher who wanted to force a Yeshiva (Orthodox all-boys religious school) to employ him so he could proseletyze boys he “knew” were gay to abandon their families’ religous beliefs.

So you want to have the government be able to forbid religous instrucion? How cutely Soviet.
You mean like knocking on peoples doors and handing out literature?
You want to ban these guys? Just put a mezuza up on your door. It’s like garlic to a vampire.

I haven’t seen that happen in the USA. In countries infested by the Religion of Peace, indeed.
