Why Do Americans Care So Much About Freedom

My point is the familiarity is happening as we speak

I’m not well educated enough to have a particularly nuanced view on Islamic texts but a direct, unambiguous call for violence on people based on religion crosses a pretty clear line for me.

You would have to be specific on what he was saying. ā€œJews invented communism as a way to control the massesā€ is silliness. ā€œWe should kill themā€ is hate speech. There are plenty of areas where this gets murky though. When does the silliness get bad enough that it incites people to violence without saying it? If you suddenly start accepting that racial slurs are OK, how long before you start mentally segregating people? How long after that before you develop the ā€œus and themā€ mentality. How long after that before ā€œthemā€ become seen as subhuman? How long after that before the violence? Hard to legislate for that kind of thing. Its an interesting area to explore.

I don’t know what you mean by this.

Do you believe that your government does a good job of consistently applying hate speech laws?

I don’t believe I’ve ever heard of them being applied to the political speech done under the guise of religious practice. I imagine that would be big news and upset a lot of the same leftists who were happy to have the Nazi dog’s owner prosecuted for filming his pet.

Thoughts?

But will they hear it?

Defamation of character? Libel? Slander? How do they fit into your overly simple view of reality?

Come on man, I didn’t really like Trump, but this is an exaggeration. The first one doesn’t apply.

The second, was more of trying to delegitimize the media. Calling it fake news and such. We were a long way away from government controlled media. I will admit that how Hitler started out was very similar to what Trump did. HItler would call the news ā€œlügenpresseā€ which translates ā€œlying pressā€. I do see the similarity, but I still think it is an exaggeration.

I don’t really see how the third applies?

The fourth and fifth, sure a little (but you are guilty of hyperbole here). Conservatives have tried to get certain books they deem as woke or certain classes they deem as woke banned in schools recently. This isn’t anything near what 1930s Germany was doing, and you know it. The conservatives trying to get topics they don’t agree with (Evolution for example) out of schools isn’t anything new, and isn’t the end of the world (I think it is silly, but they are typically not successful anyways).

I don’t like them being criminal. I have no problem with a civil remedy, provided someone can prove harm. I think it would be very difficult(and maybe impossible) to prove that someone’s words have harmed you.

Yet, people win these cases in court. Even right wing news shut their mouths when threatened with lawsuits.

It doesn’t apply because gun laws in Germany were strict prior to the Nazis.

They do, and I disagree pretty much every time.

That’s because you’re a troll.

I don’t believe my government does a good job at anything in general.

There have definitely been many high profile cases involving Islamic militant preachers being prosecuted and jailed for hate speech, yes.

No. It’s because I don’t believe speech causes harm. I don’t believe you have a right to the opinion of another.

You don’t understand the concept of communication. If I call child protective services and tell them you are molesting your kids, you’ll find out how much harm words can cause. If I report you to dhs as a terrorist or tell the cops you are selling drugs.

I’ve consulted for government at the state level. It is there I learned the answer to the question I pondered daily.

How many members of one extended family need to be on the project team so we might piss away $40 million dollars in taxpayer money with nothing to show for it?

The answer is seven.

I didn’t realize that. I thought they enjoyed a sort of protected class but it has been many years since I read anything about that situation.

These all bring government agencies into the picture. The harm would come from government.

Anjem Chaudhary springs to mind as an example, but there are others. They seem to be treated pretty well, such is the nature of the current criminal justice system, but they do get charged and convicted.

You seem awfully passive about the situation for someone who believes america has turned into early nazi germany.

Not a trump fan either

but each law pertaining to gun control is a path to banning them…hitler said to disarm the citizens is how you control them

The media is controlling the narrative…this is how communism and national socialism starts

Books have been removed from schools, libraries and stores…dr Seuss, huckleberry finn, to kill a mockingbird

Speach and language is being challenged and changed to fit the narratives

Crime is being accepted and victims are being ridiculed

Don’t be so naive to think none of this is happening
