Why Do Americans Care So Much About Freedom

If you make fun of my religion, I can consider that to be hate speech and you should go to jail for it

What about people more than just saying it a bit, if they are loud and persistently rant?

This seems about where I’m at too. Actual calls to violence or harm are what I would consider to be hate speech.

@Alrightmiami19c how do you feel about people shouting ā€œFireā€ in a crowded theatre?

I’m having a hard time detecting if this is sarcasm or not, so I’m just going to play dumb and say ā€œI disagreeā€

Something similar happened in China a few years ago. nearly a dozen ppl died and tens more got seriously injured

If a Muslim says all Jews are evil. It’s not hate speech.

If a Muslim says all Jews should die. It’s not hate speech.

If a Muslim says we should kill all Jews. It’s not hate speech.

It needs to be a specific call to act, conspiring to do harm to someone else.

Communism has killed millions of more people than National Socialism. Would you prevent people from advocating it?

Then they’re either not being harmed, or they’re agreeing to be harmed.

I can loudly and persistently ignore them. Do you have any examples that would cross the boundary into ā€œthis shouldn’t be allowedā€ for you?

It’s sarcasm but it had a point to it…the way the cancel culture is going don’t be surprised if this advocated by the extremes

Agreed. Silly, but not hate speech

Disagree. But the law may back you. To me, saying all X should die is a definite call to action.

98% chance the person reading this has no idea why.

I was just picking a random example of a philosophy that’s evidently caused harm.

My thoughts on those two specific examples though, since you ask, is that 1930s style National Socialism specifically advocates exterminating and enslaving races due to ā€œpoor bloodlinesā€ etc. whereas communism doesn’t explicitly state it. Therefore one would be hate speech, one would just be silliness.

If someone yells out something like, ā€œHey you asshole [south Asian epithet], fuck off and get out of here!ā€. If the speaker is maybe angry at the target person, and plays the race reference while they are at it. They might start to increase the rate at which the reference gets normalized in the minds of casual listeners.

Also other South Asian people could hear it and wonder if a similar speaker might have a low threshold for spouting off to them if they are near. The ā€˜us’ and ā€˜them’ border gets drawn.

I don’t have to care what those extremes think. Again, equating being a bit silly (wokeness etc.) with advocating death is just deliberately muddying the water.

1930s germany…

Banned guns
Controlled the media
Controlled speech
Banned books
Indoctrinated kids in school

Sound familiar

You will care when they target you

What is your opinion of fundamental Islam’s various Hadiths and scriptures that are direct, unambiguous calls for violence?

Hate speech a’la Hitler, silliness or ā€œotherā€?

Sounds like any number of societies throughout history. While I don’t like those ideas, they are just ideas without the threat of violence to enforce them. To me, the threat of violence is the issue.

I dunno dude, I’m middle class, straight, white, fully able and approaching middle age at a fair old clip. I reckon I’ll be fine.
