Why Deadlift?

It depends on your goals.

i cant think of a single sport or exercise routine that wouldn’t benefit from deadlifts.

If you are a bodybuilder that has found cable rows, back extensions, and lat pulldowns to work best for adding size to your back, doing deadlifts instead obviously wouldn’t benefit them, would it.

The deadlift is not the be-all-end-all of training…
on the contrary rover, it would most definitely be beneficial for even a bodybuilder. without even me saying anything, take a look at ronnie, johnnie, columbo, etc. and its not just a back ‘thickener’, it improves hip mobility and stability, killer for the hammies… overall posterior chain, improves grip (forearm size and power), and its also a solid base to progressing into olympic lifting.
and from my experience, my pull ups, bench press, and squat all went up from simply doing deads, but i digress.

you seen this kid?
he is ripped

deadlifts work everything in your back,to stretching your arms and working your grip
shoulders to feet

they are wonderful to do.

last time i saw someone eat like him, they didn’t have a shredded 6 pack

My point was that deads work for some, but they don’t work for all, and especially not for every goal.

Giving a few examples of those that use them with success does not mean that “the deadlift is not the be-all-end-all of training” isn’t a true statement.

ZedThou: I believe the first thing I said was, it depends on your goals. duh.

mr popular, back extensions alone are’t going to cut it if your a body builder, so what else do you suggest that works your posterior half as well? And name a sport or goal in which deadlifting wouldn’t have some benefit.

Actually, deadlifts help anything. You want more muscle? Deadlift. You want to lose bodyfat? Deadlift. Your alternator on your car not working properly? Deadlift.

The deadlift is not the be-all-end-all of training…

Perhaps you’ve mistaken this for a bodybuilding website?
fixed that for ya.

The deadlift crusaders on this site are hopeless. haha

::edit::

Let me put it this way. Name one sport where one couldn’t benefit from Bench Pressing.

Does this mean everyone needs to be bench pressing?

For some people the deadlift just doesn’t do as good a job as other exercises would.

the human body is designed for brachiation and deadlifts. the latter is subjective.

baseball players dont need to bench, nor do wrestlers.

basketball players would perhaps benefit from a vertical press but not benching.

weak…

He means beginners are almost always better off deadlifting then not.

I think it’s pretty safe to say that Deadlifting actually is the Be-All-End-All of weight training.

If you can’t deadlift for some reason, then you’ve clearly got something very fucked up with your body that needs fixing. And if you can’t deadlift, your training/rehabilitation plans should be heavily geared towards getting you to deadlift.

Not being able to pick something up off the floor is like not being able to land from a jump or perform a pull-up. It’s a very basic human movement that you should be able to perform and perform well.

I know some bodybuilders will argue that Deadlifting isn’t necessary and you can build a huge back with Cable Exercises and Machines. This is just wrong. You’ll get to a point where you can do Rows and Pulldowns with the entire stack but your back still won’t be super jacked.

You’ll be using what seems like a ton of plates on Hammer Strength Pulley Machines but that still won’t be enough. You’ll need to pull some heavy weight off the floor.

Yeah, you could just do T-Bar Rows and Barbell Rows but your strength in those movements will progress much faster if you Deadlift as well.

Deadlifting is fun because when you max out, every person in your shitty gym stares at you and wonders what the fuck your doing, how the fuck your going to pull that much weight.

its also fun to slam down 5 plates or so and make the gym shake.

4 plates are cool too man

Absolutely. deadlift demands the attention of every single muscle in your body, whether its the agonist or synergist. its cliche, i know, but the deadlift really cures everything. people with a lot of knowledge will refuse to believe it, or rather say it because there is definitely so much more than just doing deads, but if i had to give a beginner the best advice in less than a paragraph, id stress the significance of adding deads in his/her routine.

weak posterior chain? anterior pelvic tilt? weak and scrawny? small forearms? muscular imbalance? mild hernia? bad posture? overweight? need explosiveness? etc etc… pick up weight off the floor.

the make up wearing, cross bearing, club going, two lbs of gel wearing kids are the ones using strictly cable rows to build a back. but i digress.

Maybe even 2 if you’re in the beginner’s forum.

Less than that though, and you’re liable to get your man-card revoked. Better to stay by the cable-pulldowns, lest ye be shamed.

I hardly bench press.
I do however deadlift, not on a normal basis but I should.
I work doing heavy lifting anyways so I am deadliftinf stuff al day

Its simple if yo uwant to grow and get stronger you have to lift heavy stuff, deadlifts are heavy stuff.

I’ve deadlifted heavy maybe 3 times in the past 9 months. I used to do it weekly being a powerlifter (best pull was 500 @ 165 BW). The past year I’ve taken time away from powerlifting since its not really compatible with my lifestyle in Japan (that is fortunately coming to a close within the next couple of month when I return to Australia). Instead I have been doing a lot of Olympic lifts - cleans, snatches etc. So the same muscles have been worked, just not in the same way or with the same really heavy loads.

Anyway, long story short… I have lost significant back thickness and trap size by not doing heavy deadlifts for 9 months. I think its a genuine mass builder like no other exercise. Deadlifts make you big. Simple.

The two excuses for not deadlifting: you’re a coward or a pussy, PERIOD.

What are you going to do? Slow jack on some fruity frilly cable or some Body by Jake bullshit machine? That’s for soccer moms in spandex and pink socks.

Be a fucking man, lift some heavy weight off the ground, and eat a steak.

NOTHING comes close to kicking my ass like deads, not even squats. They completely exhaust me.

I thought T-Nation was home to bodybuilders and not wussies?
