Why Can't I Gain Muscle?
Bauer97 wrote:
I don’t get what the issue is here…

I have yet to ever see anybody on here tell somebody that they should just give up. Or that they are just a worthless skinny piece of shit who has no hope. Or that if they’re not currently benching 300 pounds they’re a massive vagina of a man.

Everything, no matter what the tone, has always been to the effect of “if you want to make progress, you need to do this instead of that”

What the fuck is wrong with that? It’s called advice, and telling people who are skinny and are struggling to gain size and strength to lift with more intensity and eat more food is good fucking advice.

Why are people suddenly so complacent and resistant to advice? It’s not like the “experienced” lifters on this board are sitting around twisting our mustaches thinking of ways to sabotage newbie’s progress…

Good post. It is as if they want us to praise their fucked up progress and lack of motivation.

405 and 495, in all honesty, are not that much. I do however think that static numbers for all weight classes and other considerations is stupid.
CHEKonIT wrote:

Bullshit. The number of people who actually would have that hard of a hard time gaining muscle would be like the number of Ronnie Coleman’s who can step on stage at 300lbs in contest shape. It is funny how every single one of these people who can’t gain muscle seems to find their way here. I have yet to meet the person who can’t make significant changes to their physique if they put the time and effort in. They may not win a bodybuilding contest, but they would damn sure make more progress than some of the guys posting pics here claiming to have been training for a decade.

If you are an adult male human and can’t bench more then 315, squat more then 405 and pull more then 495 then your smallness is no mystery.

Also, don’t complain about having spagetti arms if you think curling the 50 pound 'bells is good. It isn’t.

Really, this applies to any workout method, exercises, whatever, if you’re not getting stronger month by month YOU ARE WRONG. Correct yourself.

FACT: If you are small, you are probably weak too.
This may have taken it a little too far. A 315 lb bench and a 400 squat aren’t good by powerlifing standards, but I know plenty of big guys who don’t hit those numbers. I know I’m operating off the converse here, but this seems a little ridiculous.

you have to understand the reason a lot of these guys are so harsh is because they’ve had to deal with pretty much the same posts over and over every week. hearing people complain and saying they are doing everything right when they are really not and arguing back.

Fair point. Just don’t touch those threads. Leave them alone and they will make their way down the order and into the pages that nobody goes to anymore.

The threads that generate the most interest are ones where a skinny guy puts his pic up and all the bodybuilders in here jump on their back and tell them how wrong they were to post!

how can you suck at bulking? its like the easyest thing in the world. you eat more food than you were eating before. now you are gaining weight. you need to eat badly to make your calories? how many calories are you taking in right now. because its rpetty easy to take in 5000 calories or so of healthy food per day
I never said I sucked, but some of you guys have obviously never been skinny.

And why the fuck not eat bad calories?

Honestly?

My body fat hasn’t gone up over 12% and I eat fast food every single day.

Several times a day.

I fail to see the problem. You started eating more. You now claim to be gaining well. You are also wrong about people not being told they are doing well if they make gains and put their heart into it. That’s bullshit and you know it. If, however, some guy trained for a whole year and only gained 3-5lbs, in spite of being a beginner, he will be told that he did something wrong. The problem there is…what?
Fine, so I over exaggerated about the skinny kid.

I don’t think it’s totally bullshit.

It seems like lots of the skinny kids that post end up punching bags for the general populace of T-Nation though, with lots of bandwagon jumpers spouting some combination of “just”, “eat”, and “fucking”.

All because they want to be cool like Prof X and tell off the skinny kid.

And there isn’t a problem in telling the kid that gains 5lbs a year that he sucks, he does.

SO we need someone to say

‘Hey skinny you gained 1 lb in the last year and your ribs are showing’

followed by applause.

What would happen ?

The kid would think he is very great or something and start using the Politics and World Issues forum to pretend he is god.

No doubt there. That thread is a classic and I must admit that was the first thread I was put onto when my mates told me about this site.

Or xCelticx with his instinctual training was pretty solid too.

But there have been guys who have put skinny shots of themselves on and asked for genuine advice and they have been given the not so specific “eat more, lift heavy” mantra.

Tell them to read Berardi or whoever is best. Don’t just tell them to eat more. Give them some decent guidance.

How the hell did I miss this post?

When I saw the title I thought it was some one asking for help.

Great post PGA.

So true.

There is no magic supplement that will make you big. There is no perfect program because you will outgrow it.

Eat lots of food, get lots of calories, protien, carbs.

Lift heavy ass weights as much as you can.

Look at people like Tate. yes he wasnt very visually appealing for a little while there. But he did what has to be done. Look at him now. Hes bigger and stronger then 99.99% of the world and looks it.

Fuck having abs. Screw being lean for a few months/years whatever it takes if you want to actually look big.

If people would second guess if you even lift weights, then well, you are probally pinner.

The numbers given early are a good reference. Most people within a year (2 max) could easily hit those numbers no matter what they look like now. As mentioned in an artical on here, if you add 10lbs to your bench each month… and you started with a 150lbs bench, in three years you would be close to 400lbs.

Bodybuilding does not happen overnight.

If it’s that easy, prof, why isn’t everybody walking around looking like Schwarznegger? Some people, despite eating well and following all the Chek principles, just can’t put on a lot of lean muscle…

8 feet? Who the hell is that tall around here?

CHEKonIT did you even read the Prof’s post? He said that most people will never win a BB comp. But they will MAKE CHANGES IN THEIR BODY. How hard is that to figure out? Am I ever going to be able to step on stage? Not very likely but am I going to look better then I do now? Fuck yes.

The Prof might be a little rough, but he also gives lots of good solid advice. To get big you do need to eat lots, lift heavy, and sleep lots. And that has to be done consistantly. I dont see what the problem with telling someone they are skinny is, or they need to fix what isnt working.

From the look of your bio, looking better for you wouldn’t be all that hard.

Maybe using Arnold wasn’t the best example, but I still insist if it was that easy, 99% of people in the world wouldn’t be unhappy with their body.

Are you clueless? Who says it’s easy? Everyone has brought up hard work. That’s why 99% are unhappy with themselves. Everyone wants to look good, but they also want to eat garbage, half-ass a work-out program, and watch TV all the time.

I’m doing the almighty eating programme by keith donut.

As Zappa said, ‘SHut up and play yer guitar’ or in this case, your barbell and hamburger.

Damn that was funny!

Did the almighty eating programme once… 7 people lost their lives in the carnage. Donut gave me a job as spokesman.

The only real drawback to the diet is the horrific blinding gas it produces.

Yep, I know those guys too, but the really big guys I know like that don’t bitch about not making progress either. They’re already big. My point was that if you’re not big already, and you can’t hit those numbers, I’m not really surprised that you aren’t big.
