You all just got baited; he’s taking the piss.
if you are a believer that bodybuilding is a marathon, not a sprint, then it does make sense that some people want to have as little fat accumulation as possible during a bulk so as to avoid health problems and to increase their longevity in the sport hence they decide not to put on as much muscle as possible but may decide to take a slower approach that in theory should result in less fat accumulation than those who bulk
How do you all classify some one as being a noob and some one who has a legitimate question? I understand that the guys who have been here for quite some time may get frustrated when the same questions show up over and over but rather than dismissing the OP just refer him to a thread where he could obtain an answer. Some things are common sense but other things are more complicated. Even after reading threads and articles some people still don’t get it and may need “expert” advice. Thats like going to the doctor with chest pains and rather than helping you out he ask you to google your symptoms.
I don’t fully understand bulking and cutting either. I’m just curious as to why would someone gain 40lbs in a bulk phase just to turn around and cut 20lbs because they gained too much unwanted fat it the process. Why not gain a clean 20lbs of muscle and keep your body fat relatively the same, eliminating the “cutting” phase. Is it just because bulking makes the process quicker?..I’m purely thinking of this from a health stand point. Is it really healthy for your body to fluctuate between 10-15lbs every 3-4 months?

Why the fuck would someone diet down every 3-4 months if their goal is to get really big and really strong?

You’re assuming that the bulk was 50% fat in that example…you’re assuming that you can put on 20 lbs of lean mass with no fat…you’re assuming too much. You’re assuming a bulk only lasts 3-4 months…not slower and steadier for years…

I’m talking about cutting after the bulking phase. Some people bulk for 4 months, some may do it longer.

i agree with the fact that it might be better for you to just gain a clean 20lbs. if you start at 200 and gain 40 lbs during a bulk and then cut 20lbs of it off because it was fat, you should be able to keep approximately the same strength that you had when you were 240 even though you are dieting down. this assume you are dieting down correctly and aren’t burning muscle up as you do it.

WHO? Who the hell is bulking up for only 4 months and went from skinny to huge by doing this?
I “bulked up” for 3 years before I first dieted down. By the end of it, I actually qualified as “big” even though I was skinny when I started.

You said diet down EVERY 3-4 months. Who does this?
See…semantics are coming into play now…everyone has a different idea of the definition of a bulk…now such a heavy connotation rides on the back of that word.

I think everyone keeps looking at the numbers and neglecting everything else. These numbers were completely RANDOM. I just wanted to put a numeric value to give a better understanding. Ok, you said you “bulked” for 3 yrs before you first dieted down. Why did you decide to diet down if your goal was to gain mass?..Why not keep bulking and keep getting big?
What kind of pie do you guys like? I like a real southern pecan pie.

You would just have to look mainly at your goals. I don’t see anything wrong with gaining 10 pounds of muscle each year, and I don’t see anything wrong with gaining much more, but a large portion of it being fat. It’s all based on personal preferences. For me, I would much rather gain weight more slowly. I was fat once, and when you’re fat, you wish more than anything you weren’t. I’ve also been really skinny (after the fat loss), and once again, you hope more than anything that that fat doesn’t come back to haunt you. For alot of people, it’s hard to swallow to see your abs go away if you dreamed for 10 years of seeing them.
I’m sure many of you will look at this and exclaim that I’m tiny, so I’m wrong, but that’s okay. I feel most of the time that bulking is used as an excuse to eat more. Hell, when I don’t think my gains are coming fast enough and want to gain more weight, most of the time I reevaluate myself, and realize I’m just craving some unhealthy food. I personally don’t think that most people like looking at pictures and seeing their love handles. Even if your lats are huge, an extra inch of fluff can really bring you down.
For those of us who are vain (who isn’t?), it’s much nicer to see slow gains throughout the year than feeling bad when winter rolls around, you get in a hot tub with your friends, and everyone admires the skinny kid with the abs rather than you. But who cares? YOUR BULKING!
So for the original poster, I forgot your name, I think you should just gain slowly. And for the others, do what you want, because you too, are not doing anything wrong.
I feel like Oprah.

To simply diet some fat off. I then went right back into gaining after getting that back under control. Why are you having such a hard time with this? You claim we are just looking at numbers, but the numbers you come up with show a complete lack of understanding. The ONLY people “bulking up” for 3 months and then dieting right back down are the little guys who can’t seem to figure out why they aren’t making much long term progress.
If you still can’t understand this, then this is not for you. It is apparently too advanced.
Hey, if you can put on 80+ pounds of mass without gaining an ounce of fat, then that’s wonderful for you.
For me - I bulked to get bigger. It was worth the fat gain to me to gain the size I wanted, and it’s worth the dieting down.
If you can make huge LBM gains without gaining any fat whatsoever, then you should do exactly that.
Do you have any pics of your progress? I’d be interested to see where you’re at…
