Congratulations. Go ahead and do what you want. Do not go on the forum and preach about your belief without even considering other people’s opinions just so you can look smart.
The reason the bench doesn’t stimulate the chest as well as other exercises is because most people do not bench properly. You either bench for the muscle stimulation which is normally less weight or you go the powerlifting route and can put up alot but you’re not really using your chest to press the weight, more shoulders and triceps with the stability of taunt back, tight glutes and locked down quads.

LOL yeah how dare you post your opinion on a forum… I mean that’s not what forums exist for or anything…

I don’t mean that; I mean that he just came on here to preach instead of discuss, so what is the point in posting this thread?

Is it for every body? No.
Is it a good exercise for putting on overall size and increasing strength in many people? yes.
Do I use it? No, it bothers my shoulder too much, and even when I was moving a ton of weight in my earlier years, my chest looked like crap. It’s an individual thing that most smart trainers figure out after a while, whether it is produces gains or not. (honestly, this is a real question?!)

quite true mighty stu. my best chest development to date. came after I stopped doing flat barbell bench. never really felt it in my chest. mostly in my shoulders, joints. I switched to incline barbell bench, decline dumbbell bench, and flat dumbbell bench.
If you want to keep progressing, chances are you eventually will have to use the barbell bench. most commercial gyms don’t have dumbells heavier than 100#'s, which is pretty light for most people. even the 120# db’s will feel light after a year of training. unless you go to a really good gym with heavy db’s, the barbell bench is eventually necessary.

Im not sure where you go, but most people can’t go to 120s after a year of training… 120s db is not equivalent of 240 on BB flat.
I quit doing flat bench press mostly cause it irritates my right shoulder, and its really hard to find an open bench when everyone and their dog is benching.
Just recently switched back to flat bench for 5/3/1 and remember why I hate it, does little to nothing for my chest, either BB style or power lifting style, it also kills my shoulders. Barbell Decline and DB incline are where it’s at IMO.

If you would have asked, I’m sure Scruffy would have let you work in.

I wouldve, except he gave me a dirty look, i was wtf bro, let me work in… he was being a bitch about it
I much prefer a HS incline/decline machine to BB bench or any kind of benching. A flat DB bench is OK for chest I find, if done correctly (limited ROM to keep tension on the pecs). Flyes are great, and I quite like cable crossovers or PDPPs as a finisher.

I wish I had never even been shown how to bench press, waste of my damn time for chest growth. Sadly, it took me over 4 years to realize that :'([/quote]
See for me straight BB bench is the shit for my chest. But then again I have the body type for it; I look like a Heineken keg with tyrannosaurus rex arms [and legs. woot.]. That being said, I havent done bench or any ‘chest’ work at all for over 5 years except dips. 10 sets of 3 basically blew up my titties and i was never sore.
ONe day some one commented on my chest and i was like “really?” and it turned out that 4 weeks of 10x3 did the trick. Then i kind of got out of it and went to dips and didnt go back. Lucy enough tho I tried a max single for bench about 3 weeks ago just for fun [first in 5 years] and I can still press 300.
But when I’m training guys for big chests and upper body hypertrophy I lmost never use bench. I use a lot of CT’s DB press with cables pulling laterally. I call it chest o matic.

I’ve personally never liked open-grip benchpressing, but I have to admit one of my workout buddies use it quite a bit.
