Why 225lbs?

From my understanding when the test was first introduced it was considered the average weight of an NFL player… obviously they are bigger now but the number stuck.

Because it is a nice even number.

hmm…i was hoping that the NFL hd some more science behind it than that. as you said, the players are bigger now…why not raise the number…there’s must be something more behind it…is there an nfl coach in the house?

Do you now maybe begin to understand what I meant about posting it in “strength sports”?

Maybe try DeFranco’s Q&A on his site.

Bodybuilders may bench, but they don’t do 225 rep max tests geared towards athletes and have little reason to know the rationale behind such tests.

Yes. You’re right.

i really dont know why its just always been like that

but my pr was 225 for 25 reps when i was about 230

I think the main reason they chose 225 is it is a number that almost every player should be able to do at least once. Imagine if you had to test the 5 rep max or the 3 rep max for a group of 50 guys in the same day. On top of that you also have to test the verticle leap, and the 40 yard dash time.

With 225 they only need one bar and one bench. Maybe one or two other benches with warm up weights. They could probably move 30 or 40 guys through in an hour.
