Whoa: 150 Mile Run

I just realized something, do these guys just step off the trail to shit/piss? Or do they do it on the move like cyclists who just wait for a downhill and poke it off to the side?

Yeah, guys who run ultras need more muscle than regular distance runners, because they need strength to prevent injuries and speed isn’t such a concern, just pure endurance.

I ran an ulta-marathon at altitude once and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. It just feels like it will never end.

Both and neither. Really depends on the runner. At the Leadville they had port-o-johns set up at the weigh stations.

They had the weigh stations because they clip your race band if you lose too much weight during the race. So if you lost a certain percentage, you got clipped and your race was over for that year. Weird, wacky stuff.

That dude is not a runner, or a marathoner, or an ultra-marathoner. He’s a bad motherfucker that also runs a lot.

You would have known he was a SpecWar operator even if he hadn’t told you, just by listening to him.

actually, many ultra- runners are usually stockier than marathon runners, weirdly enough. My dad ran ultra’s back in the day

This video has officially been posted to my facebook. Epic.

jumping jacks are the 150 miles? Damn, that is one BAMF

I did not know that. Learn something new every day.

Putting aside the whole issue of muscle mass, the dude’s one BAMF. Thirty hours of nonstop running, and his shoes were probably soaking wet the whole time from crossing that stream every 2 hours or so.

He sure has loads of patience. I get bored running 1 mile, let alone 150! I wish I had his patience.

I find it’s hard to get bored when you are in pain, so my suggestion would be to run harder. Once you start hurting, then it’s no longer a decision of if you are bored enough to quit, it’s a decision of if you are too much of a pussy to keep going. This is how I always ran when I was younger. I did quite well and surprised myself. The first day you run and you are the slowest kid on the team, you are like WOW I will never be as fast as so and so (the best kid on the team) Then you break through level after level after level of your own limitations and pretty soon you are comparing yourself to top runners in the state. It really is amazing how far you can push yourself.

I get what you are saying. I guess I am one. But its also that its running… and more running… and more running. Doesn’t appeal to me. There is uncomfort in doing a 1 rep max squat and there is uncomfort in running long distances. Just different kind. I dont mind the first, but the second I just don’t have the patience for. Or maybe I’m a pussy. How nice I always liked them.

Haha no you misunderstand, I wasn’t inferring that you were a pussy, just that perhaps you weren’t challenging yourself hard enough on a run. If you go at it harder and start to feel your limitations, you will naturally want to overcome those. If you are just out half assed jogging for a mile, yea it’s boring, and probably providing little benefit to you mentally or physically.

Oh. Well I still think I’m a wuss for not having more patience. Don’t worry I’m not angry at you at all. I have ran for a couple months before and got better at it slowly. But it still is just running and running. I ran 30 minutes each time and it just gets boring. I’d much rather do a 2 second heavy lift.

For what its worth, I love sprints. 100-400meters or something like that. Running long distances is more about patience and endurance. Short ones or weightlifting is more about being even more intense within a few seconds.

Still I think its good to have both. I think I just might do running some years in the future

The dude is a SEAL who does ultras. Imo, being a SEAL is crazier than running 150 miles.

And with a heart defect to boot:

“David went in to the Doctor for a check up and they found a birth defect in his heart. It is known as ASD (atrial Septum Defect). To explain it briefly, this means he has a hole in his heart. He has had it since birth and no one was able to detect it on routine check ups. It is very dangerous in scuba diving, high altitude and extreme athletics. It can cause the heart to go into heart failure without warning. So, to make a long story short. For 34 years David has been working with about 3/4 of his heart. The right side of his heart was receiving too much oxygenated blood and it wasn’t going to the rest of his body like it should.
On Thursday of last week David went in for surgery. They were able to repair the hole and he is now in the process of recovering.”

Wow, what a legend. Seems a good one to add to the low motivation bank

Mad respect. Can’t say enough. I don’t know if I should feel inspired or pathetic cause of this. Maybe both? ha

My lungs are cashed, I can’t really see myself doing 10 miles without hacking up a lung. Let alone 150 fuckin’ miles !! my lord…

So being a SEAL and running ultras would make him…? Jesus?

The Pain tolerance for this must be ASTOUNDING. I know the top body builders got to have godly pain tolerance as well but for this, its madness!
