Who Should Play the New Batman?

Like how old? In the Dark Knight Rises Bruce Wayne was 8 years older than he was in the Dark Knight.
Well shit I can’t think of many tough male actors that old except maybe Harrison Ford, although he doesn’t have the size.

Better Scott Adkins Video

Harrison Ford could definitely put the size on if needed, even at his age. He’s at least 6’ as well, so he has the height necessary to play the role.

But in The Dark Knight Returns Bruce Wayne was only about 55, not 70. Although Harrison Ford still looks younger than half the 55 year-old actors in Hollywood these days.

I think Josh Brolin has the sort of look and acting chops that would work well in this role. I don’t like the idea of using an actor known mostly for playing the same sort of smarmy personality where they basically turn the character into themselves rather than turning themselves into the character (Robert Downey, Jr. is probably the most overrated actor on the planet for this very reason and one of the reasons I cannot stand any of the Ironman films, all of which are vastly overrated and far inferior to anything Nolan made, even The Dark Knight Rises). I think another actor who has that naturally brooding, dark aura they bring with them onto the screen is Eric Bana. He has the build, the dark good looks, he’s old enough to get away with playing a mid-50’s Bruce Wayne and he’s big enough to put in such a big role without the ego that would end up making everything all about him playing Batman rather than just melting into the role. I think someone lesser known like Callum Keith Rennie would be an excellent choice as well. Someone who usually plays the bad guy is what the role will need, since Batman isn’t really the “good” guy per se, but the least bad guy in the world that Frank Miller created.

For this reason, I think Michael Fassbender would be an absolutely atrocious choice, as would most of the others put forth in this thread. Viggo Mortensen might work, as would Brolin, Bana, Rennie, perhaps Russell Crowe even, or even Javier Bardem. Daniel Craig would be a decent pick if he didn’t look so fucking British and wasn’t already James Bond.

Thomas Gibson and Andrew Lincoln would be absolutely ridiculous choices, as would Matthew Fox. That other guy from Lost would be better. Can’t remember his name but I remember that he’s Fox’s main nemesis for most of the show.

Benedict Cumberbatch. There’s another horrific choice. That guy is, what, maybe 5’10" and about 175 lbs soaking wet? And like Daniel Craig, he just looks too fucking English to play an American playboy who’s spent the last several years drinking his life away until coming out of retirement to take on a gang of mutants who have taken over Gotham, let alone take on fucking Superman with the entire Gotham electrical grid plugged into his Bat Armor.

Ryan Goslin. There’s another guy who doesn’t belong in the role, especially not one featuring an older Wayne. He’s just a fucking kid, for Christ’s sake. George Clooney would be a better choice than him.

With all the rumors of an older Batman appearing in the next Superman flick, I’d be really impressed if they brought back Ra’s al Ghul and got Henry Kissinger to play him. Or a boozy Raquel Welch to play Catwoman.

Tom Cruise.

I wanna see a black Superman film, a black Batman film, and a fuckin’ black Robin Hood film.

Sad thing is that this will probably happen. Then he’ll play an ageing Robin in a spin-off.

Me to , all played by Tyler Perry.

Yeah I know I’m not even sure if I would watch.

I don’t think this is that bad of an idea. Put all his real life BS aside and Tom Cruise is a great actor who would do the role justice. Only problem is that he’s short. Batman is roughly 6’2" (Source: Batman (Bruce Wayne) | DC Database | Fandom).

Was watching Ghost Protocol last night and Cruise seems to have the perfect old but still in shape build that I would envision an aged Batman to have.

I don’t care.

All I know is the first time I saw Amanda Righetti I said to myself “There’s a super hero waiting for a role” so I want her as Wonder Woman. It’s a shame she’s wasted on a 2nd tier character on a Sunday night show.
She’s hot but the role of Wonder Woman should be played by Colbie Smulders hands down.

and just in case you doubted me…

Good God at the giant pics. I resized those things too. I am not really sure what happened.

I’d vote for Brolin. He reminds me of the cartoon Batman I watched growing up with the wide jaw and bigger frame.

Agreed. That lantern-jawed look is essential for someone playing Batman. That’s why half the names thrown out there so far are absolutely horrendous. Ryan Gosling? Cumberbatch? Give me a break. Those guys are fucking Crossfitters trying to play the part of a powerlifter. Bale didn’t quite have that look either, but Bruce Wayne is basically a slightly more psychotic version of Patrick Bateman, so it was really just a short lateral move for Bale to step into that role.

If they are going older Batman then I think it has to be Brolin. Jeffrey Dean Morgan that Chris mentionsed would not be a terrible choice and supposedly he met with Snyder but Brolin would be better.

As far as a young Batman, I never could really come up with an actor that I thought was even close to perfect. The best I could do was “somewhat acceptable”.

Watch Jack Reacher. He’s not as in shape as he used to be. And Jack Reacher in the book is written as being 6’5" or something. Didn’t stop them from casting him. Either way, I can’t see it at all because, same reason I hated him as Reacher, Cruise does great in action movies but he’s not a tough guy by any means. He can’t try to be intimidating without coming off laughable.

Look like Brolin is among those being considered by “inside sources”. So at least he’s on the radar.

I’m still partial to my first choice for an older Batman, Ray Stevenson. He’s 49 and supposedly around 6’3", he was great as The Punisher, and did the “anti-hero-type thing” again in Kill The Irishman. But he’s also in the Thor movies, so it’s most likely a no-go anyway.
