Who Likes the Old School Bodybuilders?

Just for fun, would the OP please give the rest of us a list of all that is wrong with this bodybuilder’s physique.

You know, tell us about where the bloat is…and all of the other things you find wrong with bodybuilding today compared to the 60’s…since you no doubt follow it closely.
Yeah, Toney Freeman not only carries way more mass than any of the old-school bodybuilders, he also has a drastically better taper. Toney is one of my favourite pros, and he seems like a great guy when I’ve heard him speak.

I prefer the older guys shape too, not so much Gironda or Steve Reeves, Reeves was not cut enough and Gironda had too little in the way of muscle for my taste. Zane was also a bit too lean and whilst I liked his taper I didnt like certain areas such as his chest at all, similar story with Dave Draper, nice guy and all but just never liked his look. Sergio Oliva, Serge Nubret, Robby Robison, Arnold and Don Howorth those are my fav 5 from that era.

Some modern bb like wolf, freeman, dex, I like there overall shape too
Admiring the older generations is great. Every now and then threads pop up for specific guys where everyone throws the pics up that they have saved. Those threads are great.

The problem is that some people see the need to bash certain bodybuilders simply because they like someone else better. The negativity is completely unnecessary and reeks of jealously. It brings this whole place down as a whole. What’s the thought process behind presenting an unsolicited negative opinion other than to express jealousy or start an unproductive argument?

Yeh very true, I assumed the OP didnt mean that though

I personally like the 80’s bodybuilders a smidge better if only because I find it easier to differentiate who and who based upon their body (arnold’s biceps, Nubret’s chest, etc…). I can still spot different bbers nowadays, but… yeah, not as easy.

Offtopic, but does anyone know what’s up with the lack of Haney talk? I seldom hear anyone talk about him, it’s always arnold, zane, etc etc etc… skip over 8 time olympia haney and go to talk about Yates.
I’ve noticed the same when the truth is, Lee Haney is the one who set the “huge back” standard that everyone else built off of. He never gets enough credit. It is like they skip right from Arnold to Yates most of the time.

If this were ten years ago, I would have also agreed with you about the 80’s…but the current crop of guys do look very different. No one has arms like Heath. No one has a chest or the symmetry of Brandon Curry (that guy looks like God held a mirror at the middle of his sternum just to make sure everything matched up perfectly). No one has legs like Branch, traps like Johnnie Jackson, calves like House, or quads/hamstrings like Desmond Miller.

All in all, the current group of guys make it seem like 1991 all over again.

That is why it amazes me that people try so hard to ignore this.

You forgot these triceps: http://www.all-stars-products.nl/Portals/0/Shared/2009/News/NL-03/Roelly%20Winklaar%2019-03-2009.jpg

The only thing better than an" old school bodybuilders are better thread" is a Bruce lee thread. Thankfully someone has bumped one from 2005 for us in the GAL forum.

T-Nation is once again complete.

Yeah, Roelly is another new guy who will no doubt make his name well known very shortly.

Yet guys are tearing this type of physique down???

Hot dog, I do see what you mean. Though what I was trying to get across was that the general structure was much more varied in the 80’s ish. Some emphasized a thinner waist more and held back on massive legs, and then there was Tom Platz…

But of course my initial statement was fueled by equal parts ignorance and bad eyesight. Ahaha

It’s quite common for people who find certain goals unachievable to dismiss the goals entirely. Professional bodybuilding has a very bright future, Centopani, Zack Khan, Winklaar all have the potential to go very far even at such young ages.

I’d rather look like the guy on the left, even though its pretty much impossible

Best of both worlds…?

Melvin Wells. 2-time Mr. America runner up (1949, 1950). First bodybuilder to build 19-inch arms.

Was invited to join the Harlem Globetrotters.

Let me qualify that I’m not hating all modern bodybuilders. Darem Charles has a pretty good physique. It’s bigger than normal, but that’s kind of the point. He carries the extra mass well. I personally don’t care for guys like Jay Cutler, Branch Warren, and many of the rest, but that’s just my personal opinion. Afterall, that’s why we are here, personal opinion.
LOL!!!

Most fans of bodybuilding today don’t like Cutler’s physique either. He has all of the aesthetics of a refrigerator. Why use them as a representation of everyone else? He won the last Olympia because he was by far the most well conditioned guy on stage that year…it was not because he is literally put together better than everyone else.

Also, saying Darrem Charles has a “pretty good physique” is a fucking joke.

How close are you to Reeves’ development right now?

Fuck.This.Shit

Kai Greene, FTW, bitches!

You people are so fucking annoying!

Phil Heath. Winner 2008 Ironman. Runner up 2008 Arnold. 3rd place 2008 Olympia.

Earned a full athletic scholarship to play Division 1 basketball.

People who just want to strike up conversation and irritate the shit out of, disrespect, question, and dismiss everyone else in the process.

Go out of the house and start talking to people.

Celtics: Good luck!

THIS is what has made me excited about bodybuiding again after a decade of personal jaded indifference.

I love the look of Coleman, Flex, Levrone, Evan Centopani and a ton of new guys. That’s the look I’m aiming for. I think Arnold and Sergio and Franco all looked fantastic as well but I want the freak factor too.

And when I say new, I mean recent 90’s plus bodybuilders cause obviously Flex and Levrone are no longer in the pro bodybuilding scene.
Isn’t it funny how guys in their day were considered mammoths? Charles Atlas was considered to have the best physique around in his day. He might have barely been 200lbs. I can respect the guys who have the love of muscle enough to build them immense. I just think there reaches a point when it looks bad on the individual. To each his own though. I say do what you love.

You think he followed the compound only, never train your arms routines?

It’s funny to think that about half of the football players in the NFL look like this guy now. I wonder if he could shoot from the perimeter.

The OP’s jibes about the current “swollen” pros reveals what he really wanted to discuss. This isn’t about splits vs. full body at all.

shit son phil is awesome. jay may be a brick, but he brought his game last olympia. kai is credible, and they all look so damn pretty. cept zach kahn. he’s scary

I’m relatively new to the site but here is a suggestion: Maybe we can get a men’s fitness forum for the guys that don’t like or appreciate muscle? You could post Fitness Routines, Conditioning Drills and Crossfit workouts all in one place.
