Whitney Houston Dead
Professor X wrote:

Because it’s being lowered for an entertainer. I’m not even comparing it to military deaths and/or mentioning the drug addiction. The flag is being lowered for a once-good singer. I think it’s reasonable to be a little perplexed at this.

Perplexed? Whitney Houston had a much bigger hand in charities and in the black community as a whole before she met Bobby Brown. I was only a minor fan of hers, but even I was aware of that.

It is illogical to ignore everything she actually did and ONLY focus on her being a singer and using drugs as if that alone is why people care.

It is also a tad illuminating that people who scream they care so little…are now on the 8th page of a thread about her…still posting…and clearly still emotionally motivated.
Houston was a supporter of Nelson Mandela and the anti-apartheid movement. During her modeling days, the singer refused to work with any agencies who did business with the then-apartheid South Africa.[63][64] On June 11, 1988, during the European leg of her tour, Houston joined other musicians to perform a set at Wembley Stadium in London to celebrate a then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday.[63]

Over 72,000 people attended Wembley Stadium, and over a billion people tuned in worldwide as the rock concert raised over $1 million for charities while bringing awareness to apartheid.[65] Houston then flew back to the US for a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City in August. The show was a benefit concert that raised a quarter of a million dollars for the United Negro College Fund.[66]

In the same year, she recorded a song for NBC’s coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics, “One Moment in Time”, which became a Top 5 hit in the US, while reaching number one in the UK and Germany.[67][68][69] With her world tour continuing overseas, Houston was still one of the top 20 highest earning entertainers for 1987?88 according to Forbes magazine
Maybe there was more to her life than just crack.

Maybe she affected the lives of many others.

Silly talk, I know. I should just jump on the senseless bandwagon of screaming, “FUCK YOU” with no basis in rationality for it.

Hmm, anyone screaming, Fuck you pull anything like this off lately?

In fact, to those with that emotion…how are you doing more for mankind than the “crack head”?

x2

Apparently, it wasn’t “crack” either…so maybe we should at least call her the right names.

Agreed Professor, but do you think TMZ is going to jump on a media moment where she is helping a charity ? Or would be more focused on posting a pic of her with a crack pipe or mug shot in the even of an arrest.

Make no mistake, the media finds good-will gestures boring, but the moment you flush your life down the toilet, they are there front and center.

I’m not a Christie fan, nor did I vote for him. I’m not even really defending his position on the half-mast flag for Whitney.

However, even Christie said he did it NOT do it because she’s a role model. He did it because of her impact on our culture, as well as her being from NEW JERSEY.

I see a lot of stone throwers here who only see one dimension.

And that’s all well and good. I just see old glory at half staff as something that can’t be attained through charity and philanthrophy to a specific segment of the population. Hell, honor her for the rest of year, name building complexes after her. Awesome. I’m sure we’ll do the same when Bill Gates dies, right?

What difference in anyone’s life does it make that the flag was lowered to honor her?

Does it diminish the lowering of the flag in any other instance? I say no.

To engage in this manner of relativism is to endlessly equivocate about nonsense.

This is the same fallacious logic used by the military rabble-rousers saying “Whitney who?”.

One has nothing to do with the other.

It’s at the discretion of the Governor and unlike many decisions a Governor or elected official makes, this one does not impact anyone one way or the other. There is no invested “side” to be on in this issue. This isn’t about taxes, jobs, or anything tangible. It’s a discretionary decision by the Governor.

Get over it.

Maybe so, maybe not. Whitney Houston was an extremely positive image up until she met the ex-New Edition kid. Her face alone helped raise money for charities. Bill gates likely gives quite a bit as well…but his image does not inspire social consciousness like Houston’s did throughout the 80’s and early 90’s.

I am not sure you can really screw up so much in life that it overshadows all of the good you EVER did in life.

That is very selective thinking.

Honestly, it sounds like a bunch of people who don’t really know shit about Whitney getting pissed off for reasons that are clearly deeper than “she’s just a celebrity”.

I find it unnecessary, not offensive. This the GAL forum. Tangible topics are not a requirement.

Not pissed man. I’m not in the don’t give a fuck she’s dead crowd, so not sure why this keeps coming up

I agree with this.

I’m a veteran too.

Though I’m not affected in the least by her passing, if a Governor wants to do it to help his state “heal” then so be it.

I like that governor, it’s good to see guys like him in politics.

I feel for her daughter. It is also disheartening to hear she was broke.

Fucking wow. Absolutely incomprehensible IMO.
He’s made a decision. There’s nothing you can do about it.

Deal with it.
So, that means it’s not worth commenting on if it’s generally regarded to be a really really bad decision? Go fuck yourself. There, I made a decision to say that. Deal with it.
Mmm, fucking myself… one of my favourite past times…

Aw biglifter, your life must be so meaningless and so pitiful that you have to be affected by the news. So what if the flags are lowered for Whithney? It’s not the fucking end of the world. Stop pissing blood out of your stinky vagina because you don’t agree with the Gov’s decision.

Whitney was from NJ and she has touched many people with her music, and her charitable contributions. What the fuck have you done for you country in your lifetime? Are you a fucking vet? There are vets who are more understandable than you are, you sour motherfucker.

Now if you’re sick with Houston being honoured in that way or any other way, go stick your head far up your asshole and smell the fucking shit in there until the tempest settles. Fucking bitch.

Oh now, I have issues? Yet you responded to my first post by throwing insult first. Seemed like you were the one who didn’t get his cock sucked for 42 days. You want to act childish, I’ll act childish with you.

And I’m not your fucking sister, asshole.

Some vets don’t have a problem with the flags being lowered for WH. You had an issue with it. Get the fuck over with it.

And yeah, I am a bitch. Don’t forget that from now on.
