No, it is antagonistic by design. This is not MLK’s movement anymore.
I was trying to be charitable, buy yeah, it does feel by design.
Okay, I wasn’t aware this conversation was limited to the US… And, I’m pretty sure Peterson can read a history book…
I pretty much grew up in Dundalk, MD, which isn’t exactly the inner city, but it’s pretty darn close. Not to mention I’ve worked a few jobs in the city. I’m aware of the conditions, but don’t see the connection between them and “white privilege”.
To be blunt, I think this is patently ridiculous. Because some inner cities are shit? How many white Mayor’s has Baltimore had in the last 25 years*? I’m pretty sure Baltimore’s city council is comprised almost exclusively of black Baltimoreians.
At what point is racism no longer a viable reason for the conditions of Baltimore and just the scapegoat excuse? It’s not money. Certainly not money in schools that’s for sure. We spend more per capita on schools in Baltimore than almost anywhere else in the world.
Why do black people, men, in particular, continue to have children only to abandon them? Because it’s culturally acceptable? Because they end up in prison more so (proportionally) than other races? Because they kill each other in greater number than other races? 10 other things none of which have anything to do with “white privilege”.
*Martin O’Malley forgot he was mayor. So 1…
The way I see it, with everything else being equal between two people, the racial minority is likely to have had negative experiences due to being a racial minority. Can this shape a person? Of course. But how often is everything else equal? As an easy example, is Obama’s child more ‘privileged’ than a poor white kid living with his single opioid abusing mother who routinely brings home men of questionable character and temperament? I bet that white kid is wondering if has privilege got lost in the mail or something.
Doesn’t mean he has read or book or has any practical experience.
That wasn’t the question. The question is whether or not the conditions in predominately black communities exist because they are rooted in racism or, I don’t know what excuses the deniers are coming up with to make white people less culpable.
Why?
Why?
Why?
If you say it has nothing to do with outside forces then you are claiming it is genetic. I don’t think you want to do that.
You can’t undo centuries of culture and history in 25 years. Especially when you throw in obstacles like a drug war and unequal treatment in the justice system.
You will always have outliers but, Obama was raised by white people.
Mkay…
You didn’t ask me a question. You made a statement about living in the city and seeing, for myself, how the larger community has abandoned it. I have observed it and I don’t see the connection.
Baltimore has been majority black since before I was alive. 4 of the last 5 Mayor’s has been/is black. The city council is primarily black. Has Baltimore gotten better, remained the same, or gotten worse in the last 30 years? Have the results been because of white racism or something else?
(culturally acceptable)
There are lots of reasons why it’s become culturally acceptable to father a child out of wedlock and then not father that child. Probably a books worth of reasons that I’m not about to flesh out here.
(Prison)
They commit more crimes proportionally… Again, there are a bunch of reasons why. It’s culturally acceptable in inner cities to be a drug dealer. It’s the best solution to poor socioeconomic conditions. In some case, police prejudice (The BPD is predominately black, though).
(death)
They kill each other (in the inner cities) a lot… Again, there are a bunch of reasons. Gang activities. Drug conflicts. So on and so forth.
None of these issues are cut and dry, a portion of the issue is probably rooted in America’s racial past. I’m certainly not denying our history’s impact on the black population, but at this point, again, I see it as a smaller piece of the issue. At some point, racism stops being the reason and starts just being an excuse.
Black people have held political power in Baltimore since before I was born and the city is worse now than it’s ever been. You’re not going to convince me it’s because of racism.
Name a couple.
You are not that old so you are taking about a very short period when compared to what went on before. You actually think things would suddenly change for the better in a period as short as your life? And it’s not black people, as a group, who have power but the individuals in office who do. The same people behind white politicians are behind them.
In 250 years we went from black people being owned, to black people being free, to black people being a protected class, to black people holding every position of power in the country including every political office possible (something women can’t claim) being billionaires, CEO’s, etc…
I don’t think it’s much to ask to reduce the murder rate not increase it in 30+ years.
What? You might want to fix your math. The US isn’t even 250 years old. Also, you left out Jim Crow, redlining, white flight, segregation, etc.
It was obviously a ball park number. If you’re going to be ridiculous I’m done.
An extra century is not a ballpark but regardless, you left out a lot of history.
2018-1776 = 242…
When did slavery end? Maybe I misunderstood where you were starting from. Sorry.
But in that case, you left out all of the years OF slavery before this was an actual nation.
Emancipation proclamation? The end of the civil war? Either way, it just benefits what I’m saying. So we went from Slavery → Every position of power, wealth, influence, fame, etc… in 150 years. So, it took even less time.
I didn’t think it was necessary to write an essay on the subject: “African’s in America - A Complete History”.
What happened in between the last couple of decades and emancipation?
Yep. However, he and his daughters are viewed as ‘black people’ by society at large. And I doubt the vast majority of people realize the above. My points is that race alone had little impact on his ability to be successful. If race was so significant in a white privileged world, he would have never won. Further, his daughters know a privileged life–every advantage for success–few in this country will know, regardless of color.
I don’t believe the starting lines are the same for everyone in the rat race. But I don’t think just being recognized as ‘black’ sets that line back as much as many perceive. In my above scenario, we don’t even need the Obama’s. It’s an all black family, one parent works for the post office, the other is a teacher. They actively keep up with their children’s homework and study time.
The white kid is still in the same situation, except mom is no longer an opiod addict. The kid is still left largely unsupervised. Homework is never asked about and nobody is insisting on study time… .
"White privilege’ is insulting to a fairly large portion of the country whose lives sure as heck don’t feel privileged.
A lot of things both good and bad. Jim Crow, segregation, lynchings, etc… MLK “I have a dream”, the civil rights act, equal opportunity, desegregation/integration, affirmative action, doors opening that were previously closed, etc…
Maryland in the house.
I grew up in MD spent way more time in Baltimore then I wish I had. Used to have to go into Brooklyn to pick up auto paint supplies for my old mans shop.
Oh yeah uh white privilege isn’t a thing. Ben Shapiro said something great right after the Baltimore riots
“I’m offended by the language of uprising applied to people who are breaking into other black people’s stores and looting them. This is a lack of values. People who are destroying private property, destroying cop cars, in an uprising against what exactly? Against a black police chief, against a mostly minority police force, against the black mayor, against the black president, against the black attorney general? Against a city council that is 9 of 15 black and all 15 are elected Democrats? What is the uprising against? What is it seeking to achieve?”
Idk, maybe it’s just my perspective. My father, aunt, and uncle grew up/went to a school during integration (my dad has a pretty funny story about it). My aunt married a very successful black guy (after marrying a Chinese guy) and my uncle married a Puerto Rican. All of my cousins are mixed race and I obviously grew up with that being normal.
That could jade my perspective I suppose.
