I normally don’t drink coffee and avoid pre-workout stimulants.
I am going to try this route. I was away from pre-workouts for a while then decided to try one from another site that isn’t this one and I loved it. When I get my finances back in order (damn vacation and lack of budgeting skills!) I will be trying Alpha GPC+Power Drive+Brain Candy before my workouts.
Protein and carb meal about an hour before
Hyphy mud ~15 minutes before
Protein powder and gatorade during
Protein powder and raw unfiltered honey afterwards.
Morning training - train 45-60 minutes after breakfast. Usually a couple eggs, some bacon, toast, and a big glass of milk. Then I have my creatine/BCAAs peri. Post workout, I have lunch.
Evening training - train 45-60 minutes after dinner. Peri is creatine/BCAAS. Post is about an hour after and is usually 10 Oreos and a glass of milk for dippin.
Whey right before bed, unless I’m drinking. Whiskey and milk/whey is no bueno.
Right now: A “pump” product + BCAAs. Mainly because I had never tried either before and I hate it when people criticize training methods/products without actually even giving them a try.
In the past:
Hydro Whey + HBCD carbs.
cream of oatmeal (grinded oats) + protein 30ish minutes pre-workout.
solid but easily digested meals 1-1.5 hours pre-workout (chicken and white rice, for example).
And of course, empty, or empty + caffeine.
SOME KIND of energy/supplementation > empty stomach.
My training hours are weird. Gym is only open 6-10pm. I get there at 6pm. Assuming I ate at 7am and 12-1pm, that’s a long break without food. And then I train at least 1.5 hours (including warm-ups). If I’m not supplementing, at the very last I need to eat another small meal around 4-5pm.
But supplements are convenient. And yes, they do work. I don’t want to have to always cook another meal. It is easier to wash a protein cup than a fry pan and some dishes and silverware. I don’t have to carry food if I am out, or head back home to cook. One more thing I like about my current set-up is that I have enough energy throughout my workout but it is essentially 0 calories. That’s more calories I can get from real food.
And the most important point that supplements score…less farts.
Training on empty stomach with preworkout booster and BCAA
Training on empty stomach with BCAA and caffeine pill
Eat light meal such as banana, whey and coffee and wait for 30 minutes, then drink preworkout booster before training in another 30 minutes.
Eat moderate/heavy meal with coffee and wait for 1 hour, then drink preworkout booster before training in 30 minutes.
Which one do you prefer?
Is there a none of the above option. I usually train 2-4 hours after a large meal (4 grilled cutlets, a large salad, and some carb source) depending on the day and whether I work. Regardless of how long it’s been I always sip on a pre/intra workout shake of whey and honey. If not honey, then brown sugar to keep my insulin high and follow that with another massive meal. Seems to be working for me

I think if you need something to amp you for training that’s a bit of a bummer. Aren’t you keen?
I just don’t really see the point. I get the explanations for it but it makes me think - what are you going to do the day you don’t have your sups?
I can see your point if the person is constantly overloading with stimulants. But remember that not all supplements are stimulant based. Not all products are there to AMP you up. Some can just help with energy (stamina). If you are spending over an hour in the gym and it’s been awhile since your last meal, by the time you finish training it could well be 5-7 hours since you last ate.
About the last comment…A bodyweight/gymnastics training enthusiast may turn around and ask you, “What are you going to do the day you don’t have your iron bars and plates?” =)
My workouts are too intense for a light meal or fasted training. I die half way through without some food in my stomach.
Even now while at the tail end of a cutting phase i still do 1 cup quick oats and 2 scoops of whey before my preworkout drink, and sip HBCD during.
If i wasnt cutting as hard as i am i would more likely do 1 cup oats mixed with 1 cup egg whites and topped with 2 tbsp nut butter such as nuts n more PB and then slam a scoop of whey before hitting the gym.

My thoughts exactly. The sheer fact I am able to train is motivation enough for me to be able to train as hard as I can. If I am really dragging, I’ll hit the nose tork.
I ALWAYS train with preworkout. Is it a necessity? no, but i like to ensure that i will be as amped up and focused as i can be during my workouts. Especially since i hit the gym at 6am after a 10 hour night shift.
I am a high volume, high intensity guy. If i dont have the energy and im not “in the zone” my workouts arent as good. If my workouts are slacking then my results will be too.
Its no different than using straps for a 585 lbs deadlift PR. Without them you likely wont perform as well and because of that you will miss out on some sort of gains.

You really do all that!? How does your stomach feel with all that going on? Also, had to look up “hyphy mud”. Sounds gnarly.

I mean…gainz
Yeah, I definitely avoid being amped in training. I find it tends to make me weaker overall rather than stronger. I save that for competitions.
I train first thing in the morning at 0500, so my pre-workout these days is 2 pop tarts and half a diet coke, haha.

EDIT: That said, have you tried nose tork?
No i havent, since i dont do any low rep/really heavy stuff i dont know that itll help much. As i said, i am a volume guy so while i go heavy, we are talking generally higher reps (8+, sometimes much higher)
There is nothing worse than sitting in a crowded gym at 6am after work and letting out these huge, drawn-out yawns in between every set.

Yes that is my “diet” around my workout.
Hyphy mud does not taste good at all. It’s a nasty shot.
The pre-workout meal isn’t big. A big burrito and a cookie sometimes. Tuna and crackers sometimes.
I put protein powder and a scoop of gatorade blend it up and put it in a green with orange lid gatorade bottle. By the time I get to the gym it has settled down a little and I fill it up with water. It is actually pretty light.
I feel great with this routine. I am normally a person that feels better on a empty stomach when I work out. But, I am putting on weight so I do what I have to do.
I use the walmart super advanced protein so it has creatine in it, I also take two liver tabs with my post-workout shake.
