Whey Protein Adulteration?

Has anyone heard of companies “watering” down their whey protein powders with maltodextrin since the price of raw materials have significantly increased over the past year?

Thanks for the help!

It’s called cutting, and yes this happens and I don’t think I’d be alone to speculate it’s inreased because of milk prices going up. But hey if the BSN case has shown us anything it’s that there might soon be a precident for sueing over supplement label claims in the near future.

I’ve heard from two good sources that this is the case with what’s probably the most popular protein powder on the market at the moment.

Subtle, nice!

ON?

Oh great ON I have half a 5lb tub left too.

This is a post by an owner to a supplement company who will remain nameless(some of you might recognize him)

Its going to get very ugly trust me—corn prices have gone up sharply also-- we are already seeing some very sketchy stuff happening out there including one major player in the protein genre buying all “off spec” protein (protein that didnt make the grade after testing)…how do we know? We were offered the same deal and when we refused the manufacturer said “its no big deal, ******** ******* does it”

So on top of the possible cutting, some people are buying inferior product to begin with.

ON, crap I just got a 5lb tub.

I wasn’t saying for sure IT’s ON…just speculating. When you ass-u-me we know what happens. They seem to do a lot of volume, and while their price has risen it hasn’t been by THAT much which in a way worries me. Either they’ve excepted tighter profit margins or costs are being cut somewhere.

Yeah I know, i was just making the same assumption as you because, ON usually sells well. I’ve seen the price of ON rise over the past few months so I figured it was safe but, now I’m scared. Usually I have a protein shake for breakfast mixed w/ yogurt, cottage cheese and blueberries so i can get it enough protein and I can’t afford eating sugar cut powder.

i highly doubt ON cuts their protein with maltodextrin.

Great info! Keep the suspects coming as we all deserve to use our finances for products that are what they claim they are.

Guys,
I can assure you that ON 100% Whey Gold Standard - and no Optimum Nutrition product for that matter - is cut with malto.
We take great pride in the fact that we are the leading manufacturer of whey protein in the sports nutrition industry and are quite confident that all of our products meet and/or exceed label claim.

What’s more, we do not use off spec material, but rather use the highest level of standards in buying raws from only the most reputable raw suppliers in the industry and as such routinely refuse material that we believe to be anything other than the highest quality.
Any questions or comments about ON please feel free to contact me directly (rather than post unfounded rumors).
And to those of you who have and continue to use our brand thanks for your support!
