Protein Powders-Assays

A friend of mine told me that 20/20 had a lab assay done on all the popular proteins on the market and found that most had only a fraction of what was on the label. PVL was the only company that had 100% of the label claims in the tub that was tested.
Now when I pay my $40 (Canadian funds) for my Optimum whey, i know that I’m not getting the high quality of AP or other high end Protein, but I 'm a student and have to eat on a budget.

So does anyone recall the numbers from that story? Or maybe know where I can see results from previously performed assays? Soon I will graduate and live on AP instead, but until then, it’s discount tub o’ whey for me.

P.S. Nothing beats real food, but try living out of your locker!

Come on, AP is only about 2 bucks for a 40 gram serving and you know it’s quality and you know it tastes good. Why mess with the bad tasting cheap filler stuff if you have to use three times as much to get what the label says you’re getting from one serving? That pisses me off so much I would boycott the discount companies anyway! Then again, I was a broke ass student once too. And I know the Canadian prices suck. Still, AP really is worth it, IMHO. Some people buy half and half to stretch their budget a bit.

AP tastes great but it is very expensive here in Canada. The Canadian gov’t tested PVL whey and it was dead on as far as label claims go. I don’t think you have to worry about Optimum’s whey but where do you get it for $40.00 Canadian, the cheapest I have ever gotten it for is 46.00

If 20/20 did that study, it would not only be available but broadcast around the world. Can your friend get you a copy of what has to be a well publicized expose?

If you stay with name brands, you will get what is on the label. EAS (of all people) makes Simply Protein in 5 lbs tubs, and what is on the label is what is in the package. Comparatively nexpensive as well.

What brand is PVL - is that an abreviation or is that that actual brand name - where can you get it in canada and for how much? Thanks.

Where you got it at 46$ ? The less that i’ve pay is 55$(tax include) for 5 X 5Lbs.

Cheapskate is right. This 20/20 report on protein powder is becoming an urban legend. I just searched the ABC news web site, which includes the archives for 20/20, Primetime, Nightline, Good Morning America, and World News Tonight. There simply is not a study of protein powders. (I also hit msnbc’s web site, which includes Dateline features, and there’s nothing there either. I’m not going to bother with CBS – as much as I’d like to see Morley Safer pounding an EAS desk with a raft of assays. No, even better, a few minutes with Andy Rooney: “J’ever notice how they always put the scoop at the bottom? Why is that? I don’t like the scoop at the bottom…”)

Cheapskate, out of necessity, I’m living on that Simply Protein also, and as bottomless tubs of whey go, I like it. Heck, as faceless, editorially populist corporations go, I like EAS. Body-for-Life drove me to the airport, so to speak, so I could catch the T-mag flight and never look back. But Cheapers, are you aware of any independent assays for Simply Protein? We share the same general faith in the product, but I sure would like some numbers. (I’ve also suspected that Prolab’s “Pure Whey” is legitimate, though again, this is just a feeling.) I’ve never heard of PVL and would welcome any information about it.

PVL is a Canadian company based out of British Columbia, although they have offices outside of Canada. I believe they have a website, and I’m not sure if their products are available in U.S., like I said the Canadian gov’t tested their whey protein isolate and it was dead on. The gym was selling Optimum for 46.00 Can. some time ago. The only proteins that I use are Advanced Protein, Met-rx Plus, PVL, Prolab, Eas and Optimum. I think as long as you purchase from these companies you have nothing to worry about.

I use Interactive Nutrition’s Whey Isolate. Quality is close to AP (I believe) and I get it for $95 for 5 lbs. So basically, I get 1 lb more for the same price as AP. I use up the 5 lbs in one month. It ends up being a little cheaper than AP at retail, plus I don’t have to mail order it and pay shipping.
I don’t think that it will make a HUGE difference in the type of whey you use. I used to use Optimum’s stuff myself.

I think you guys are worrying about this WAY too much. One brand of whey protein honestly will not have a superiority over another to the point where your gains will significantly suffer. Just drink massive quantities of any protein supplement that you like. FYI, I think AP is my favorite, but I also use Prolab’s because it is a little less expensive. Peace out.
