Right now at a place called Orion Fitness. They’re pretty cool about most things, as long as you clean up after yourself. Next month after I leave my college apt I’ll be heading to a world gym near me that is ok with anything (even chalk) as long as you clean up after yourself. And next year I’ll be at my school gym, which is also apparently ok with anything including chalk.
Actually, one of the deans of the undergrad (Vanderbilt for those of you wondering) is a competitive bench presser and even lets people borrow his chains.
Commercial gym for now but used to train in my basement.
I have a special squat rack that I could dismantle and bring down to the basement. Since my training partner was stronger than I was, he would have his own bar set up at one end and I would have my own bar at the other end. We didn’t waste time loading and unloading.
Plus, if we wanted to do negatives and didn’t have the manpower to lift the weight back up, we had a pulley system built which permitted us to raise the bar back up. Didn’t use it that much though!
As for dbs, they went from 10lbs 60 in increments of 5 then 70lbs to 100lbs.
My buddy had 2 X 100lbs plates that we could load up quickly. We had close to 1000lbs just in plates.
Damn straight I’m coming down. Those are too much fun to miss. Send me a PM and maybe we can have a beer. Friends of mine own Mulligans its right on the corner of B-Street if you haven’t been there yet. A pretty laid back enjoyable place for a game of pool or a beer. Talk to you later, Elk:)

Very cool. I’ll PM you before the bash! I’ve been to Mulligans and agree it’s a cool place to hang…
I work out at a 25 Hour Fatness (I’ve altered the actual name to maintain anonymity). It is indeed much like a similarly named megagym, only it has less fitness and slightly more, well you guessed it, fatness.
The location is great, and the hours are pretty decent. I have heard that this particular gym has over 20,000 members. In theory, that should suck. But amazingly, it rarely slows me down. I do have to wait a few minutes for cardio equipment to get in my warmup or intervals, but not always.
Here’s the amazing thing. It has ONE power rack and ONE squat rack. I do 50% or more of my lifting in or with the power rack (DL, squat, push press, row, power cleans). Still, I rarely have to wait for the power rack. That’s hard to beat.
Good thing none of you f*ckers go there.
I would love to set up a home gym, so the rest of this thread is aimed at you home gymers. I like to segregate my life. Work at work. Exercise at the gym. Drink at the bar. Do nothing at home. Have sex at your mom’s. And so on and so forth. I have different operating modes in each place. Thus I am hesitant to set up a home gym. I do work out alone, but I tend to procrastinate. BUT, the minute I step in the gym, it’s GO TIME, and I’m ON! Can you guys relate, or am I a nutjob? (Don’t answer that last part.)
I go to Peak Performance NYC. The website is www.peakperformancenyc.com
We have some great training implements, particularly for a not hardcore looking gym. A large part of the clientele is supermodels and acting celebrities and other people, in “the buisness.” Feel free to be jealous…I have wrestled with a victoria’s secret supermodel in BJJ class. Not that I’m bragging.
Weight Sled
Farmers Walk set
Chains and bands
2 Oly lifting platforms
Chalk
2 Squat Cages
Glute Ham Raise
The Prowler (Elitefts)
Belt Squat Machine (we just got rid of it)
Jump Stretch platform
Reverse Hyper
Kettlebells
Boxing Bags
etc.
Plus, if you come at the right times, there are only 1 or 2 other people working out. It’ interesting to see supermodels dragging around the weight sleds and doing kettlebell work. Peace
-Matt
Also, the gym I go to near by school in Boston is I believe the longest open gym in the U.S. Since 1852 I think. One day, I went into the basement and discovered the old style barbells and dumbells (with the round shaped weights) from the early days. I felt like I was in the Goonies and stumbled in upon lost treasure.
Plus its cool to see pictures on the walls of all the old time lifters.
I work out at the local YMCA and also a Premier Fitness gym… costs some money but having 2 gym membership prevents me from wussing out since one is close to home and the other one is close to work.
I have noticed that the YMCA seems to be an asshole magnet in terms of cocky teenagers… I’m 30 myself and no slouch but they come in thinking that it’s a social club WTF. I try to just focus on my own workout to minimize distractions… anyway, I’m still on the hunt for a god local gym.
I have found that the fair maidens and lasses that frequent the Premier Gym though are quite, ahem, inspirational in their workout outfits… haha
