When to Stop Fish Oil Before Surgery?

have knee surgery on jan 5 and was wondering if i should stop taking fish oil prior to the surgery. if i do, then how long before the surgery should i stop taking it? how long after the surgery can i start taking it again? right now im taking 15 pills of standard kirkland fish oil per day.

any help would be appreciated… THANKS

At least 1 week prior, if not 2 weeks.

ok thanks… how about getting back on it? can i do it right after surgery or should i wait?

I think the reason for not taking fishoil is because it can cause problems with anesthetics, so you could probably start taking it again right after surgery.

what kind of problems does it cause with anestesia?

Never heard of problems with anesthetics, but Fish Oil does prolong coagulation of the blood, which could lead to excessive blood loss in a surgery setting.

And all recommendations (That I have heard of) say to cut out dietary supplements 2 weeks prior.

As for re-continuing Fish Oil use, ask your doctor. I have no idea what could happen to the healing process, and I doubt this message board is more knowledgeable on the subject than your doctor/surgeon is.

I just had a minor procedure done and my doc didn’t care at all about my fish oil use. I talked to him about it and he didn’t think it would be an issue at all. I stopped taking it 2 days before surgery just in case. I haven’t started taking it again yet, but that’s more an organization issue.

I agree with silverhydra, talk to your doc and then decide on your own.

I have surgery tomorrow and stopped taking fish oil two weeks ago. I think it has to do with needing inflammation post op. I haven’t really gone into detail about it with my Ortho.

I just ordered the ANACONDA protocol yesterday and I’ll have to sit around and look at it sitting on my shelf as I recover. It kind of sucks but it’ll get me through the process faster.

I was going to add Curcumin 500 onto my order but figured I will on my next order of Metabolic Drive, Flameout, and the two Surge products.
