When to Buy Wraps, Straps, etc.?

ATM the only thing i wear is belt (which i think is useless cuz it doesnt even fit my waist,my waist is like 71 cm).

So, only when the body start to feel pain due to pressure during squats or bench or whatever then it will be the time?

Or they are good even now when im still weak, causing me to do explosive pushes in a more safe way o.o?

Buy shit when you have a specific reason to buy it.

If you don’t know what that reason is, you’re probably not ready.

You’re 18, and you make a lot of posts that suggest you’re over-analyzing things. Go train for another year or two first.

I think he’s trying to tell you that you need to go spend more time lifting than reading at this point.

There are no absolutes in lifting. That’s why there are 100 different experts with 100 different books that explain 100 different ideas. None of those ideas work for EVERY lifter. You have to sort through those ideas to figure out what works for you.

The ideas exchanged on this forum will have more meaning to you when you have figured out how to listen to and understand your own body. Your body is unique to only you. What gives me great results might give you good results or no results.

I tried 5/3/1 and didn’t get great results. While trying it, I did figure out what works with my body. I now run what I call a backwards 5/3/1. It works great for me. I’ve not seen anyone write about it, but it’s based on 5/3/1 and the feedback I was getting from my body while doing my training.

Most likely, when you ask the type of question you did in this thread, you already have an idea that you either want to buy some stuff or you think you should wait. You will probably get both responses. And then you’ll follow whichever response that matches what you are already thinking. So just do it and see how it works for you.

I used to ask whether I should lift barefoot or not. Because I like lifting barefoot. I like the way it makes my feet feel stronger and more “in touch” with my lifts. So what I really wanted was someone to give me the answer that I was already going to do anyway.

Buy some NOW elite fts has even got them on sale right now…

Straps and wraps, belts and even bench shirts and suits are merely TOOLS to help one accomplish their goals. There is no mimimum strength required to use them. If a wrap will help keep your wrists straight and help you bench then have at it. This will allow you to keep benching which in the end will help make you stronger in the long run.

Look, I’m 40 years old now. Been lifting for many moons. If wearing a belt every fucking set keeps my ass in the gym for another 20-30 years, guess what… I’m wearing that fucking belt. I don’t give a fuck what some keyboard warrior says about “core strength” and all that shit. blah, blah, blah…500# on my back is not the time to work on hawt abz…

ie - do whatever you need to do to stay in the game…

now, save yourself some time… Go buy an Inzer forever belt, single prong. 10-12mm doesn’t matter. You will outgrow it before you even remotely wear it out.( If you don’t already own a quality Powerlifting belt) those thin tapered belts suck and don’t count. Also you’ll have to learn to push your gut into the belt.

sorry if I sound cynical I sometimes get annoyed by fuckers on forums who don’t want to have a semi intelligent discussion even IF it’s been asked 5000 times. lol.

good luck dude.

My point is that when you discover a need for these tools, then you’ll be ready for them. “When” is not a matter of strength, or even necessarily of achiness/pain, since these things are not used solely for pain maintenance.

Buy wrist wraps when your wrists need the support.

Buy straps when you feel you need straps to get in additional work after your grip works.

By anything once the need presents itself in your training, but don’t go buy a whole boatload of shit just because that’s what someone stronger than you uses.

Are you referring to me? I thought I gave him a fair and reasonable answer to his question.

not necessarily, but I’ll now use you as an example…

the first reply was kind of stand off ish.

then you elaborated on the topic to justify your position. You could have just given the info in the first place while citing a personal experience of when you bought your first tool or piece of gear. this would have added to the conversation and the OP would have gained real world perspective of if the gear helped or did nothing. Now the burden is on the OP to decide whether or not he’s going to buy some shit. Instead, he now has to ask again about the question and hope that someone will come along with something tangible.

Think of it this way. If I were to approach you in the gym and ask if your wrist wraps helped you to bench with better form and help alleviate wrist pains would you tell me to go home a “google it” or would you just give me your thoughts?

I once saw a guy squatting against bands. I asked him about it one time in the locker room. he told me a bit about it and actually invited me to train with him. That guy got me hooked on powerlifting. Had he have blown me off I might still be weak as fuck and working out in a globogym somewhere or doing crossfit WOD’s. lol

anyway, sorry to rant and no I wasn’t calling you out specifically, it was a shotgun statement for something that annoys me, but I’m just some jerk off on the web typing shit like all of us are lol.

Yeah, real talk new guy: lift as long as you can without equipment.

Lift until your wrists hurt or are unstable, then get wraps.

Squat and deadlift as long as you can without a belt, then get a belt.

Squat until your knees get a little achy, then get knee sleeves.

Squat more, until you’re confident that you need the support of knee wraps.

Do all of those things and get very strong, then decide whether you want to try any kind of single or multi-ply gear.

There’s no substitute for time under the bar.

i got that! ,i will do this way till i know i reached my body “comfort” limit, i hope il reach that comfort limit when il do 1500lbs+ lol (ATM im half way)

Thanks for answers ,and yes ,its not nice to say someone ,go google it or you are too stupid if you ask many questions or whatso ever but il respect that as well, maybe too many questions are not good but for me works : D ,better than google because i get better results ,better answer ,i dont mind it ,anyway il post more topics cause i need to know more : )

Whenever you want. Some will never wear a belt, they swear their loyalty to the “RAW” god and others will pop it on at as low as 50% of their max. It’s all up to you. If you choose to compete in powerlifting, then a better belt should be purchased. After all we’re lifting to lift the most weights.

And you don’t need to make a new thread for every little question that you have. I understand where you’re coming from. I’m also always worrysome about my training. I remember playing football for an entire day and I had to hit PRs the next day, I wasn’t sure if I should’ve rested an extra day and recovered more or just lift as planned. I wanted to know so badly to prevent injury or failure but the only way to find out was to go in and do what I was suppose to do. It’s all trial and error. Coming in on forums and asking these questions will just give you mixed ideas and then get you more confused.

If you need to learn more, that means you need to quit asking questions on a forum and actually do some reading. Read Starting Strength, Practical Programming for Strength Training, the 5/3/1 Manual, Beyond Bodybuilding, Brawn, Super Squats, etc. Read an actual book. Forums are honestly a terrible source for information, especially when you attempt to learn by just asking random questions rather than learning concepts.

Agreed^^

I’d like to recommend you go through the articles on Elitefts.com and Louie Simmons articles as well. If you really want to learn, you should come home from the gym to a big meal and a book.

On a side note, T3hpwnisher, how far are you from Williston ND?

Yes sir. I just got back Wednesday night from a 3 week stay in Williston. I opened a shop there and I’d like to find a good place to lift next time I make the 1400 mile trip
