When Does a "Fake" Pandemic Become "Real"?

I need to sell masks! And yes, there is good reason to wonder about profits, for the CARES act incentivizes death by corona and diagnosis corona.

Nope, not funny. And disrespectful to the gender neutral/ fluid. Try again, and can you be more respectful of our poly-gendered brethren?

Pat gets threatened with being tea-bagged and responds with the above haha. Great unintentional pun.

Yes it is Captain SixDicks.

That is objectively funny And original.

Don’t want shit? Don’t start any.

If you were serious about protecting his health you would be recommending a glory hole instead:

None, and all of it. None because its a conspiracy theory nut job thing to think that companies would deliberately do shoddy work on tests, or manufacturing for this. All of it because good companies are designed to pivot as quick as they can to take advantage of any opportunity to make money.

Yes, supply and demand is a bitch.

I hope so, squares of cloth cost only cents to buy and stitch!

What is it that you see in this report?

I think they are probably doing just about the best they can with the tests and manufacturing (aside from defective Chinese masks), but what I mean is that while public demand is supposedly high in many places for increased testing and mandatory masks, it is possible that some of the businesses profiting off of this might be trying to influence public opinion in some way if not government policies. If you owned a mask factory then wouldn’t you want masks to become mandatory?

Ah, I see that makes it much clearer. I am glad I misunderstood you.

I don’t agree with this though, because everyone knows it’s an inconvenience. And realistically, all the companies manufacturing surgical masks have many many other items they make, so it doesn’t represent the bulk of their revenue. They were unprepared and unable to ramp up production quickly enough given both the spike in supply and the tenuous global supply chain.

All the companies manufacturing cloth masks also never made a single mask in their existence before the pandemic–it’s clothes, fashion all around. So what I said before is more accurate IMO: successful companies pivot towards demand and profit. “Wearing a bandanna? We just came out with these super stylish colorful cloth masks, wear this instead”

They’re taking advantage of a new market, but it doesn’t represent enough of a slice to bother lobbying for because it’s not their primary revenue stream. Medical companies make much greater profits on some other items.

EDIT–for example, that infomercial “perfect pillow” guy announced back in March he was going to dedicate a factory to masks and such (and ventilators if I recall correctly, but it was a while ago and I might now). Makes made up exactly zero % of his revenue stream, he’s just pivoting

It might now though. Looks like a lot of regular people are buying cloth masks, but in all healthcare facilities every employee is using several masks every shift, compared to none previously for most jobs. The companies couldn’t fill the demand at first, but now they certainly can and surgical masks are now one of the top selling items.

What about test kits and the machines used for testing? The machines must cost thousands, each kit can’t be more than a few dollars but in some places all healthcare workers are tested regularly and lots of people are getting tested. In Ottawa there are 3 testing centres and it can take the whole day to get your test done because there are so many people who want to be tested. Someone is making money for sure. The Ontario government was saying a while back that they wanted to test something like 16,000 people a day but not enough people were showing up and so on, next thing you know they have various workplaces mandating testing for employees and they are opening more and more test centres. All this despite a 30% false negative rate, and supposedly the virus isn’t spread by asymptomatic people.

Honestly, I think you really underestimate the limit for manufacturing ability of these companies when given a supply chain and time to ramp up. I also think you underestimate the scale of revenue they bring in relative to masks. I do not think surgical masks are enough of a revenue source to induce lobbying for mandatory mask laws. Sizeable source by volume no doubt, but not that big.

Yes. But those aren’t going anywhere for a long time (i.e. ever) regardless of mask mandate. Someone is making money certainly, but I don’t have a problem with that and I don’t see why it is a concern.

This is good surveillance procedure in general for a pandemic. You need a high testing volume to quash outbreaks before they get bad. I can’t comment on Ontario’s situation since I don’t know the case load there or anything, but the concept is correct.

I’m not trying to argue that there is in fact a group of mask and test manufacturers lobbying for mandatory masks and increased testing. There very well could be, but there is no evidence to suggest that.

The problem is the 30% false negative rate, plus the supposed fact that asymptomatic people can’t spread the virus. The test is near worthless with such a high rate of false negatives, and if asymptomatic people can’t spread the virus then we should be concerned about those with symptoms. Of course that is assuming the WHO is correct, and if they aren’t then they better get their story straight fast.

So highly inaccurate tests that might actually do nothing to determine whether or not you can infect others, and masks for people who can’t infect anyone. What use is it?

When I tested positive, I had no symptoms and Ottawa Public Health told me I could still work except I have to wear a mask at all times. I made it clear to them that I am the one cooking all the food for dinner, but that was no problem. Of course my workplace wouldn’t allow that, but it’s public health that is calling most of the shots. The funny thing, they told me I couldn’t walk outside or take a bus but I can cook for a bunch of old sick people.

Soylent Green Industries still needs their raw materials.

What makes you think it was intentional? There was another one you missed. Good catch though, I thought nobody would actually notice.

You call your unhinged rants, ‘shit’? Captain SixDicks is supposed to be funny? Why cause it refers to dicks?
All I am saying that if your trying to ‘burn’ me at least be funny.
Amuse me oaf, or be gone!

Information? There’s lots of data to play with and analyze. Information like this for instance:
“For 6% of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned. For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death.”

If we are going to make life altering decisions for the public we need good data. I am trying to provide the best data available so that people can make up their own minds based on data. It’s not a requirement, but its better than getting it filtered though the media.

A restaurant in my town, one of the better ones, just closed its doors for good. There are others that have been closed but I’m not sure if they are going to reopen. The sad part is we’re getting closer to opening everything up.

Sigh. I’m asking what you saw in the information. What did the information in the link tell you?

Well you said earlier you wear a mask when asked out of respect. Seems like you’re trying to play Trump here and be against something and poo poo it until you realize that isn’t working and then say “yeah I’ve always been for that.” We see your “if you can smell a fart through a mask you can get corona”etc posts up above.””

At this point months into a pandemic that has hit this nation like a freight train and we still have people who can’t even do the absolutely simple tasks that people way smarter than you say are effective. That’s not a middle of the road response. That’s just being a fucking idiot.
