What's So Bad About Bubbles?

My dad is very obese and he has been told by a dietician that he must have absoloutley no carbonated drinks at all.

Fair enough I understand that sugar filled fizzy drinks are really bad of course,

I also understand that the caffine in diet cola can mess up your metabalism.

But what would be wrong in drinking a diet soda that has no sugar and no caffine?

Sodium maybe? Alot of doctors tote the anti-sodium flag pretty hard. I dont really get it…they say hey you’ll lose a little weight but really you’ll just retain less water…Keep in mind that most “dieticians” still live in the anti-fat and everything pro-processed food crap early 90s

Carbonated Drinks have been shown to decrease bone density by leeching calcium.

Really? Interesting, How does that work?

Not sure why my dad would be told that in a need to lose weight situation though

Ya, I would think the sugar thing would be the deal breaker. Back when I was a scientific goody-goody a health psychologist I was helping with research told me about it. He said something about the carbonation would prevent the calcium from properly digesting.

And since the body wasnt getting as much as it would need the bones would start to release calcium it had stored for other body functions. The way he explained it made sense. Anywho, a diet pop isnt going to kill ya.

Hey electric_eales. Long time, no see.

Listen, just off the top of my head, does your father have any trouble with say acid reflux or indigestion? Was he told to avoid any other types of food or drink? Also, does he have diabetes or any blood sugar problems?

Hope all is well with you.

Susan

Hi Susan, I have not been around for a bit, how are things with you now?

I have found I can get away with not taking eph but I cannot poo without it! Serious I was constipated for days then I had some eph and I was OK!

I think my dad may have diabetes, but he is a fool to himself as he will not go and get checked, I cannot talk to him about the subject to much because he gets angry too, basically he is a fat grumpy ass hole!

I really do not many details about what he has, but he has major bad halitosis (which I wish if I had the balls to tell him about) is that a sysmptom of acid reflux?

Thanks Susan and to everyone else for the help.

Things are going really well in that regard, thanks. I have never heard of eph doing that??? Hope you’re feeling better.

It’s hard to know why the dr told him to avoid things without knowing his medical history. Just the first couple of things that came to mind were diabetes and maybe his body’s acidity level. If he’s very acidic, he may be told to stay away from soft drinks, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. I was told to avoid these things when I found out I had an ulcer. My system was very acidic.

As far as acid reflux, halitosis is a big symptom. Acid reflux is (simply put) when the contents of your stomach basically travel back up the esophogus, sometimes reaching the back of the throat leaving a sour taste/smell in the persons mouth.

I don’t know; it’s a shot in the dark really and I could be way off here. Just some random thoughts. Is he really that grumpy that he won’t tell you anything or let you go to one of his appt’s with him? Hope I didn’t confuse you. Just thinking out loud (scary as that may be). If you find out anything more about what’s going on with him, post it and maybe we can come up with something.

Whatever the case, it sounds like it’s really bothering you. Take care of yourself and keep your chin up. You can’t change your father’s lifestyle but it’s always a good idea to know what’s going on to be able to get him help if he needs it. Good luck to you:)

And don’t be such a stranger!

Susan

I think this is conected with phosphoric acid content of many (cola type) drinks. I cant see why, for instance, drinking carbonated water (i.e. no other ingredients other than water and CO2) would cause any negative effects at all.

OKay, this may be complete BS, but I read it somewhere and figured I’d throw it out. The theory was that the carbonation somehow affected the digestion of certain macronutrients. Again, this could be complete crap, but in case there’s any validity, I thought to share.
