Hi guys,
I’m currently on a clean bulk with 1 cheat day (meaning that on that day I substitute 2 of my clean meals with “cheat” food like Subway/Wendy’s while still hitting my macros).
A buddy of mine busted my balls yesterday for NOT drinking diet soda, arguind that the diet cokes, pepsis and Dr. Peppers out there are THE silver bullet for bodybuilders b/c they taste good just like a “full sugar” soda while having 0 cals.
So far, I’ve been staying away from diet sodas despite their 0 cal count b/c I seriously doubt whether all other ingrediants are healthy…
What do you guys think? Is it “safe”/healthy for me to start chugging diet sodas and enjoying the taste or should I keep staying away from them and why?
PS: I a similar thread is already out there - sorry. Didnt have time to look very far back into the forum history.
Probably the most controversial ingredient in diet sodas is the artificial sweetener (usually Aspartame). There’s also phosphoric acid, potassium (or sodium Benzoate), caffeine, caramel color and citric acid.
How do I know this, from the 24 oz bottles of diet dr. pepper, diet coke and diet pepsi (wild cherry) sitting in front of me from the past three days.
You eat healthy, train hard, I don’t think 1 diet soda in a day’s going to hurt you. I’m sure you’ll find plenty of people here who will disagree though.
When I got my plan from Shelby Starnes he said “Have as many 0 calorie diet sodas or drink as you like.” Albeit, that was 1.5 years ago so he may have changed his views… Personally, I drink as much as I want and have never noticed any differences physically.
thanks a ton guys
Probly the best and worst news I’ve heard in a while
Best b/c I’m going to start enjoying 1-2 cans of those tasty diet Dr. Peppers a day now
Wort b/c my friend was right…lol
There is a risk of damage to teeth just due to the acidity and the fact that people have a tendency to basically sip on them all day…which means more acid all day. This can increase the risk of tooth decay even though it is not on the same level as consuming too much sugar.
It is all about how many exposures in a day.
You could likely off set this by constantly drinking water…but then, how would you find room for all the soda?
why would you include diet soda if A. you can get by without them B. care about your health ?
if you’re a soda junkie and need a “fix” then yes go for the diet, but let’s be honest diet soda isn’t a health drink and will not only be bad for your teeth, your bones as well.

Yea, I try to brush my teeth soon after drinking soda.

Without getting into all the deals of aspartame my stance is against it, except for two occasions. During a cut phase or in a social situation where it’s sadly the smarter option(also great to get them off your back). Other than those your just rationalizing bullshit.

Damn you jehovah, I drink diet coke like it’s water, lol. Don’t tell me it’s yet another thing I truely enjoy that I should cut off my diet! I’m a real addict. I have quit soda many times, just to go back to it after a moment of weakness. If I have even one, I’m hooked for months. I can’t just have a little bit. It’s drink it or quit it like alcohol. Well PX says it’s bad for the teeth so maybe that’ll help me quit it. I hate getting dental work done more than anything.
Side issue: I’ve read the acidity/alkalinity issue on bones is not really established at this point and looks doubtful. Do you believe it’s a big issue? I’m very interested b/c my mom has osteoponia.

Prof X will have to confirm this for me, but I think its bad to brush your teeth directly after you have drank diet soda. Something about brushing away the enamal(or however you spell it)??
I used to drink diet soda, but now I prefer not to. I actually enjoy a long cold glass of water after my meals.

Same here!
I plan to have 1 or max. 2 cans a day (if any at all) if I really feel like it, with lunch.
Since I’ve a 5min. commute to work and go home fore lunc hevery day, I brush my teeth 15-30min. after every meal which should minimize the acid problem.
Just wanted to make sure that diet sodas don’t contain ingrediatns that are outright super bad for my health before I enjoy one every now and then
Thx again guys!

I’ve heard that too.
That’s why I wait 15-30min. before I brush my teeth after a meal.
My dentist said that doing so is not a problem but then again I’m sure there are as many different opinions on this out there as tasty, but unhealthy foods to eat…
I like to use Diet Mt. Dew as my caffeine delivery system in the afternoons. I only do it a couple of times a week but a 24oz Dew can get me through so sh*tty work days.
I do however have a hard time drinking Crystal Light or similar products because they leave a white residue in the glass. Something about that doesn’t sit right with me, although I am sure I’m being a hypocrite since I will still drink the Dew.
