I’m interested in what PLs go through in a PL meet. I’d like to know what people do to get ready the day of the meet. What they do to prepare themselves mentally and physically - before the meet, during the meet, and right before the lift.
I am not a PL and have never been to a meet but I am interested in it. I may just have to find a meet to attend to see what goes on but would like to get input from anyone that has experienced it.
I didn’t see any threads on this topic, but if it already exists then please point me in the right direction.

To be honest you wont find any threads on it because it will be different for every lifter. Not too mention it would take an entire book to just describe what we go through before the meet.

And no two meets are alike…

Exactly. Some move so fast you can hardly catch your breath; some are so slow you worry about getting cold…

The worst are a mix of the two! When you fly through squats, then the take their sweet time setting up for the bench, or there are a million bench only people, followed by very quick deads.
The experience depends on a lot of things, maybe most of all if you had weight issues and what you may have had to do to make weight.
The last meet I did was in mid-July. It was in a basketball gym, and it was HOT. The computer equipment/scoreboard overheated. I was sweating like a pig, and I’d had weight issues, so I was not feeling great. I didn’t lift well at all. It was still fun. Go do one.

I went to a meet once that had one flight of squat, then three flights bench. I felt like driving home and then coming back for the deadlift.
What do I do when I’m not lifting? Warm ups, chatting with other lifters, drinking water, snackin’.

The quick deads seem to be a common occurrence. You have your full meet bombouts, lots of tired “f- it” attitudes and people who had to leave for one reason or another. A lot of people just seem not to like to deadlift which is weird to me because that’s my favorite part of the meet.
Man people saying some cons to a meet, but what makes it great is EVERYTHING! When you compete your biggest weightclass rival would be the one helping you put your stuff on correctly, every person there is there to help eachother do their best, plus its one of the few times during a year you get surrounded by people who truly understand what your doing.
I go to Wal-Marts and buy a big sandwhich to eat during the meet and I wear sweats and a hat. Everything in the warm up room is covered in chalk and everyone stinks like Bengay or horse linament.
its really fun, people r nice, just dont piss neone off or start a fight ha, but great atmosphere and youll prolly learn a lot, great experience and eat in between squat, bench and dead, get jacked and good luck

Hi, I’m Steve. I think we may have been separated at birth.
