I’ve been learning how to box. I don’t plan on competing or anything. Growing up, I loved watching boxing. Always wanted to try it and finally worked up the courage.

Are you looking forward to Zuffa boxing? That Crawford vs Canelo fight was legit.

I know people complain about the fighters not getting paid as much, but maybe this is what boxing needs? An actual league where fighters are actually forced to fight each other.

As for OP, I also love Tennis and have a love/hate relationship with golf.

I’m for whatever gets fights made. The entire lead up to Crawford vs Canelo I couldn’t believe it was actually going to happen. For instance one of the undercard fights that night was Mbilli v Martinez. It was an absolute barn burner of a fight. Possibly fight of the year. And WBC ordered a rematch almost immediately afterward. But, it doesn’t look like its its going to happen as Mbilli is trying to get a fight with jaime Mungia. It’s not a new problem, there’s a ton of fights that never happened or happened way too late. So if Zuffa has the money and they make the fights the fans want to see, I’m for it.

Awesome. Have you had a chance to spar yet? I remember the first time I did and I thought I was in shape. But as the old saying goes, ā€œthe bag don’t punch back.ā€ We did two minute rounds and I thought I was going to die after about 40 seconds. Again, I was in shape. Would hit the bag, rope work, and mitts for round after round and road work 3+ miles a day. After my first sparring session I swear my lungs were on fire.

Not yet. I’ve only been boxing 2-3 months and don’t have a lot of time to commit.

I’m not in a hurry to spar. Just learning and practicing.

I do want to spar eventually. I’m just not ready yet.

Work, 2 young kids, and working out are my first priorities.

Love hybrid (as in the off shoot of CrossFit) and I’m decent at it. I don’t love ultra running, but won my first and only 100 miler.

When I turned 30, I decided I was going to fight in the Tough Man thing they used to have. Trained for months. Dropped down to the lower weight division so I didn’t get killed. Felt REALLY confident going in. But I never sparred. Ended up fighting a 20 year old kid whose dad owned a boxing gym in South Texas. Holy shit. It was 3 two-minute rounds. In the third round, I literally backed up, bent over, put my hands on my knees and just tried to breath. Everyone thought it was hilarious. I thought I was going to die. He didn’t knock me down, but he beat the ever loving crap out of me.

I decided Martial Arts was a good idea for me when I was in my fifties. We sparred on Fridays. One minute rounds, one on offense, one on defense, one both. Not many guys showed up - more interested in the color of their belt than their skill level I think. Or, they had a social life.

The first time sparring (think I was a blue belt) my best match size wise was one of the instructors, a black belt. I was on offense first. One minute is forever. He took it easy on me but still managed to rock me a few times. I cannot imagine going five minutes.

I enjoyed every sport I played but wrestling was my favorite. The 1:1, win or lose and nobody to blame, pure competition aspect made it fun.

The toe is pretty well protected, between the boots and whatnot.

What I found to be high risk was my decision making or lack thereof. It turns out that down is not the only way to fall. With enough speed and creativity you can fall in almost any direction.

Agree… I have been watching boxing for decades. I kind of, sort of, keep up. Though he is getting up there, Usyk has been amazing. My favorite match however was Joshua-Ruiz I. Who would have even imagined that?

First of them all is baseball. My team is the Sacramento/Las Vegas Athletics. It is unfortunate Oakland lost its baseball. My favorite Athletic? This might surprise some, Dave ā€œKongā€ Kingman. Nolan Ryan as well. As John Smoltz Has stated, ā€œNolan Ryan was a freak!ā€

None but I could have fallen in love with grappling if I was introduced to it when I was younger. No grappling in my area when I grew up. Played hockey but didn’t care about it.

Funny how Ryan is the favorite player of a lot of Angels, Rangers, and Astros fans as well. I’m an Astros fan, but I really hope the A’s organization gets things turned around.

I had a chance to see Nolan Ryan pitch one evening as the Rangers were playing in Oakland. I tried to get my wife and in laws to drive the two hours and watch Ryan start. But no, ā€œWe don’t like sports!ā€ My mother in law bellowed. We did not go. I get up the next morning look at the sports page and sure enough Nolan Ryan had thrown a no hitter. That was 30 years ago and it still irks me. The A’s organization needs to put a winner on the field when they land. There is just too many things to do in Las Vegas than put a mediocre team on the field.

I can’t wait to go catch an A’s/Astros series in Vegas.

Billy Beane And Jeff Fischer have run that team into the ground. They have a good group of youngsters at the moment. In fact I have mused about how funny it would be if this group made a pennant run and had to play an ALCS in their 14,000 seat Sacramento stadium. Probably not a snowball’s chance. Manfred would fill the back of his Italian suits though.
