What Is World Combat League?

Saw it advertised in Tulsa for tonight. Looks kinda like Karate matches 20 years ago.

Any one seen it?

It’s weirded up kickboxing that Chuck Norris is a part of. They fight with enormous pillows on their hands and most them seem to suck.

I believe it is basically Karate/kick boxing with pads but in some kind of a team format.

It’s all stand up. You get penalized for clinching. The fights are only 1 round, but you fight twice during the match.

It’s a team format based on points per fight.

I had a thread about this a couple years ago, you might want to look it up.

It’s marketed as a bridge between point fighting and MMA fighting.
A bunch of fighters from different disciplines are picked to be on a team (teamed up by city). They can be muay thai fighters, kickboxers, karate guys, Tae Kwon Do fighters, or other standup fighters. The matchups are mixed, so a muay thai fighter can go against a point fighter (who surprisingly do extremely well), for example.

There is no ground fighting allowed. Points are awarded for aggression, and taken away for passivity (which can sometimes really suck, because defensive and counter fighters are punished). If the fighters know what they are doing, it looks very exciting. If they don’t know what they are doing, it can look like they’re just going in there, and flailing their arms.

There are 2 rounds, which are either 2 minutes, or first to a knockout (whichever comes first). There is a long break between rounds, of unpredictable length. This ensures that fatigue doesn’t set in, so the fighters go 100% both rounds.

Hope that answers your question.

It is two separate 1-round fights - not 1 2-round fights.

Watch it once, and you will see what I am talking about.

I am not a huge fan. The format of the fights seems to really prevent any strategy other than going in and throwing for the fences. This can be exciting but there is no depth to it. Also point sparring sucks.

Substandard kickboxing for subhuman viewers.

Does anyone know any decent martial arts/fighting programme? I’ve only lately seen MTV’s Final Fu and that one sucked bad.
