Training or otherwise. I’ll list two training related things.
Aerobic conditioning is overrated. I know what it’s like. People compete in tought competitions with tough events and feel they don’t have enough stamina, endurance, aerobic capacity, whatever it is. So they take it as one of their big goals to reach.
But let me tell you something. Those things will always be hard. No matter how you train, log press medley of 5 logs in 90 seconds will kill you! I think people should realise this. Some have even gone so far saying that strongman is 50/50 aerobic conditioning and strength. I think this misdirects the beginners starting in the sport.
(Direct) bicep training is underrated. I don’t have much for my argument here, except that I feel like it. One thing I have to say though. I don’t agree with people who say not to train the biceps to protect them from tears. By default stronger is stronger, also stronger against tears. It all boils down to knowing your own limits. If your bicep hurts, take it easy. If the tire you are about to flip frightens you, skip it. Either take responsibility for your actions or stop complaining about the hazards of the sport. But of course there are also accidents that could not have been prevented. So it’s not all black and white.
Not sure if this fits as over/underrated but I think strongman has become a little to standardized…
I understand that some events are considered staples but 20 or so years ago I think there was a little more variety…I like some of the older WSM with the likes of Bruce Wilhelm where there were all kinds of crazy events…that’s what got me interested in the first place…
On the other hand there are some contests that are just too one sided…It’s been a long time since I competed but I’ve been looking to start up again so I’ve been keeping an eye on potential contests…one that I came across had both a max squat event and a max dead lift event and no farmers or other heavy carries…it might as well been a power lifting meet…

Was that a NAS sanctioned contest with a max squat and max deadlift?
Some events have been eliminated because they either took forever to complete or they were not safe, but I believe that there is still a good amount of variety.

Shakes…
I don’t think it was a NAS sanctioned contest…
I can see why some events should be eliminated like iron bar bending (i.e. when Kaz tore himself up)…and I’m not complaining there is plenty of variety in strong man…That’s what makes it so interesting…I just hope that the sport doesn’t become so regulated/sanctioned that it looses it’s uniqueness…
