What I DONT Like About 300

What I dont like about 300 has nothing to do with the movie itself, but rather everyone that is seeing it.

At all of my nearby theatres, the movie is sold out this entire weekend. And I have friends who aren’t as ‘well read’ who keep trying to express how cool the trailer is shit like “man this would be badass if it was a true story…” rolls eyes

I’m not Greek, but my father is a pretty well read guy. Rather than Dr. Seuss or some silly shit at bedtime he would tell me stories of 300 spartans who stood against impossible odds or tales of the brilliance of generals like Xenophon (my screenames namesake) and Alexander or even fictitious heroes (who may have been based on fact) such as King Arthur Pendragon.

I knew that I wanted some ink that commerated the spartan victory and what it means to me and my childhood for quite some time now. (I’m not trying to discuss my decision to do this…it’s a deeply personal one that I’ve been mulling over for while- so fuck off if you don’t agree with it).

But since the movie is having immense popularity… I’m glad that I am not planning on getting inked for a good year or so (have a final design I’m sitting on it for a while to decide if its truely what I want on me forever) till all this hooplah dies down.

Imagine if I had already gotten tatted up… “OH wow you saw the movie too? yea thats pretty badass huh! Man guess what I heard it was a true story!” I’d seem like just another obsessed fanboy (which is a debateable point I guess).

Fucking hell, has no one ever heard of Herodotus? Whats even worse is that some people don’t realize it was based on a comic book. Am I the only nerd who knows who the HELL frank miller is?

…and people wonder why I’m fairly reclusive now of days.

???

So, you don’t like the movie because it interferes with you getting a tattoo?

Yes, you will look like a total tool if you get a “Spartan” tat now.

What I don’t like about people who reply first in the thread about not liking something about the 300 movie: DID YOU HAVE TO QUOTE HIS ENTIRE FUCKING POST?

Otherwise, yes. The release kind of shitted all over your plan, Xen. However, Spartans, or most warriors of Europa for that matter, did not wear tatoos themselves, right? Hold it off, no big deal. It’s your mindset and attitude that make a warrior. Peace.

Is it really that big a deal?

No, it isn’t. But seriously, I see this all the time. It gets annoying after a while to scroll down x5 of what you should be and then the reply is only two lines.

Xen, if you’re trying to ask if most people are completely uneducated in all kinds of ways, than the answer is “yes”.

Ask people what book “Troy” was based off of, and who wrote it. Ask them, if they saw the end of the movie, if they realized that the sword of Troy goes to a man named Aeneas. See if any of them realize he is the man who finds Rome.

I daresay it would be easy to find people who think Gladiator really happened.

Ask them who Herodotus is, Plato, Virgil…

No, not in this country. The classics are pushed aside for Anna Nicole Smith deaths and OJ trials, and the only education people get is through movies. Books and literature are not America’s strong point.

Get used to it.

What is even more annoying is having to scroll past pathetic complaints about someone else’s posting methods. Come on man, loosen up a little.

P.S. I suppose someone could now say; whats even more annoying than that is scrolling through complaints about complaints of posting styles… and so on and so on!

A lot of people aren’t as educated as others. In some cases, it’s their fault. In other cases, it’s not. Not everyone had a mother or father that read to them, told them stories, and encouraged them to explore things further while growing up.

Don’t be pretentious about it. If it means that much to you, then take the time to tell your friends what really happened when they’re mistaken (without talking down to them, of course). For some it will probably go in one ear and out the other. But a few may actually take the time to do more research of their own.

One of the real problems with ignorance, isn’t the ignorance itself, IMO. It’s the assholes who stand on a pedestal saying “I know more than you” without any intention of ever helping to rectify the matter.

As for the ink, if you want to be a real bad-ass, do it Kratos style. Get that fucker swirling around your entire torso to the top of your head. Anything less is pointless.

And no, you’re not the only nerd who’s heard of Frank Miller. I’m pretty sure just a couple of people around here have seen Sin City a time or two.

I understand what you mean.

But there is no excuse for being uneducated, especially in the age of the internet. It is pure lazyness.

I am greek i REALLY enjoyed the movie (and i forgive all the historical inaccuracies, simply because it’s based on a COMIC book FFS). What i dont like about 300 is that it may cultivate a warlike attitude to Americans against Iran and other middle-east countries. (schnyder=fanatic republican). Ιt also promotes Arianism.

Yes, now if you were to do this, you would look like the tools in the gym after gladiator came out that were getting “SPQR” tats on their shoulders in the hundreds. None of them actually knew what SPQR stood for.

And if your ink design doesn’t have “MOLON LABE” on it, in greek, then don’t do it!

[quote]acidhell wrote:

Which is ironic as Aryans originally came from India and Iran.

I liked Spartans before they where cool.

Who gives a fuck, people see a film to be entertained they dont need to know everything about it, thats what the fucking film is for. You have made a post about a problem that doesnt exist, you wernt planning on having this tattoo until next year anyway yet your saying how its good u didnt cause every1 would be on about the film? WTF DOEST IT MATTER IF YOU ARN’T PLANNING ON GETTING IT UNTIL NEXT YEAR ANYWAY?

Dude, fuck it if everyone else thinks you got it for a movie. I mean, I kinda had to deal with the same shit. I’ve been a pretty big fan of Greco-Roman history for years. Ever since I read Gates of Fire years ago when I was in the Corps I have had a hard on for Thermapolyae. You aren’t alone. But if you want sweet Spartan ink, get it. My girlfriend wanted to get Molon Labe inked on her this weekend but decided against it and got Domari Nolo. instead. But again, while it is lame to have to deal with other people’s ignorance, it is equally lame to really CARE about it.

Don’t get used to it, if you don’t like it, try to change it. Buy a dozen copies of Gates of Fire and give it to the next guy who says that 300 was cool.

The ironic thing is, how many here, before a couple of months ago, had actually heard of Thermopylae? Not me, now I’m hooked. My knowledge of Sparta has increased 100X’s. I actually researched on my own and gave a 30 minute class to my Marines on this battle, Spartan warfare, the phalanx, and Persian armor. I didn’t know shit about this stuff and had no interest until I heard about this movie.

So the movie was historically inaccurate, however it has been a gigantitic springboard for, I’ll guess tens of thousands, who will actually go out a reseaech this topic on their own.

That’s the mark of greatness.

Gates of Fire is not one of the classics, it would be better to hand out Herodotus.

There is definitely no excuse for being uneducated. But who defines what areas of knowledge makes one educated? I know plenty of guys who didn’t finish high school but still know a hell of a lot about some things.

I agree, I have more buddies that never went to college who watch the history channel alot that are far brighter than half of the dimwits I saw in college.

I’m just saying I wish people who seek it out more, instead of having the movie version of history all the time.

And by educated, in this case I mean “knowing history”, I think, because history is the one of most important and underrated of all the subjects.
