What Does Off-Topic Think of PWI?

The leveling system is multifactorial in nature, but it all boils down to interest level. I don’t come here for purely educational purposes, so it’s not invariably going to be about who I agree with or who is going to supply me with a dry, pretentious, sleep-inducing speech. It’s either this forum or As the World Turns.

It is easy to move up… just increase the level of condescension in your posts and drop the avatar – it’s making me feel tingly and confused.

I find that some posters challenge the way I think about things, even if I don’t agree with them, and that’s always good.

Religious debates bore the hell out of me though. Live and let live etc

LOL, yeah, just call me Czar Nicholas.

Proof that I don’t run PWI because if I did I’d have minimum IQ standards that would restrict the likes of you.

Proof that we need IQ standards. After all who else but a dunce would suggest there’s too much political discussion in a forum called “Politics and World Issues?”

face palm

Well then have yourself a coup and install a czar that would mandate all the things a dunce thinks would be “cool.” In other words - regulate speech. THAT’S the progressive way of doing things. Cool.

A post like this really belongs in the Semantics and Bullshit thread.

PWI are sticky, and positions should be passionately represented. Balance, or as close as we get at the practical level, is reached by negotiating these positions. Sometimes feeling are hurt, sometimes bonds are formed. These are not casual matters.
I disagree. They are too “passionate” over at PWI. And that gets in the way of being objective and tolerant of people with differing views. It’s just a bunch of conservatives discussing conservative issues, subjects and debating on them. Any liberals come in there and they are idiots for having different views.

I lurk there occasionally because I find it interesting how easily manipulated they are by their leaders. It gives me a different perspective on why conservative leaders and fox news use fear to manipulate their base. It’s because it works pretty well and people genuinely respond to it.

Therefore, some posters got shuffled around based on either causing or dodging shitstorms. It’s not necessarily a ranking of intelligence, though undoubtedly IQ DOES factor into their perspectives and positions on subjects.
IQ has nothing to do with it really. There are intelligent people on both sides of the issues, just like there are idiots on both sides. Their world views are likely shaped by a variety of other factors, like environment, parents views, what they learn, etc.

It’s a load of self-proclaimed experts railing on subjects they know very little about or have limited experience in for the most part.

Also a gigantic amount of misinformation as well as misconstrued “facts” pass for reality in that forum.

But every idiot is entitled to their opinion.

Oh yeah, every once in a while you run across who has something insightful, well articulated and well thought out to say, but that’s a rarity.

There’s a ridiculous amount of Sean Hannity types on that forum. And by Sean Hannity types I mean totally thoughtless republican pawns.

Just caught this. Thanks very much.

I think there used to be a better balance of the left-leaning/liberal crowd until semi-recently.

To be honest, there are very few posters I think I would not get along with in real-life. The people who talk about what assholes everyone is or how it is populated by a zombie army of conservative automatons regurgitating Rush talking points have not spent enough time there and/or have made a knee-jerk judgment based upon their own prejudices.

I think anyone with a modicum of intelligence who will actually post and follow through with his idea and allow himself to be challenged will find that it is one of the more honest, challenging political forums you’ll find on the net.

I would honestly like to see some of the posters from GAL post in PWI more often. I always enjoy Prof X’s posts, even though I only agree with him about half the time. The 298 million year old forest thread contained a number of very smart posters whom I would love to see add to the debates on PWI. I’d like to name more names, but I am walking out the door. Will try and post more later.

I have noticed in most online forums that discuss politics, and from what I’ve heard people say about PWI in this thread is that if you lean to the right…you see the forum as full of liberals, and you lean to the left you see the forum as full of conservatives.

How many threads are there on that board that are essentially about the same thing.

PWI has basically become a place to go if you want to talk about Obama and Republicans, and express anti-muslim sentiment.
Start a thread, then. What’s stopping you?

Come on, this is the interwebz after all.

^^^ That Eastwood thing is great!

May I just say that I’m a Libertarian (though Canadian) because it seems like the best of both worlds.
Stay out of our bedrooms AND our wallets government!

X2. This is along the lines of what I was saying.

Thanks

It can make for an interesting & or AMUSING read. Plus, like with most philosophy, politics, ethics etc type forums it does tend to attract a fair number of higly intelligent, knowledgeable posters.

Only problem is, it’s pretty much OVER-FLOWING with uber-conservative, religious folks who flatly reject pretty much anything which is not consistent with their rather rigid world-view.

^Of course, this is what puts many people off it…then again…it’s also part of the draw^

Haha.

Although I said myself I would like to see more posters from different areas of the political and religious spectrum on PWI, I must say that some (not all) of the posts on this thread are a bit on the whiny side.

If “we” are so wrong or if there is so much of something or the other in that forum, it’s not like we are ganging up and restricting access or censoring posts there. Well, except maybe for push.

If somebody says something that is clearly wrong, you are more than welcome to correct it. I think part of the problem is that many of the posters from “my” side are seasoned debaters who know their subject matter very well, and tend to make short work of the ignorant, drive-by attempts at heckling we get when some lost poster wanders in looking for the toilet.

It’s no great task to bitch about the taste of the grapes in PWI from way over here in GAL. A different thing entirely to make the same claim when everybody is sitting at the table with the fruit before them.
