Finished “Fever Dream” and then “Cold Vengeance”, now am reading “Two graves”. All 3 of these are like a 3-part series, and are quite compelling. However, I prefer when the main character is working on a very complex, puzzling case as opposed to this mini-series where he’s trying to investigate the murder of his wife…which was apparently faked.
I placed the next couple of books in the series on hold with my library, hopefully they get them in before I finish Two Graves.
If you managed to make any headway in your Sandford books I’d love to hear what you’re reading now. Oh, and I’ve been able to read quite a bit this weekend as I’ve been sidelined, I somehow pulled/injured my piriformis muscle. Its painful as hell and all you can really do for it is ice, heat, stretch. It’s this tiny but, as I now know, very important muscle that in on the interior of the glute, attaching from the sacrum and going outward horizontally to the outer top of the femur, it’s responsible for hip abduction. But, when it’s injured and inflamed/swollen, the real bitch of it is that it’s located right next to your sciatic nerve! So, my whole glute, thigh aches, and my entire right leg feels semi-numb. Like when I touch my calf, it feels like when you’re leg is asleep and when you touch it, you can feel the pressure but its a very vague sensation. Kind of like my whole leg is asleep, but when I walk it’s painful as hell. Funny how such a tiny muscle can almost incapacitate a person. Unfortunately, from what I’ve read online it just takes time to heal, and all you can do for it is what I’ve been doing. So, I’ve been sitting on a heating pad/stretching a lot this weekend. Worst of all, it sure doesn’t feel any better, and walking long distances is painful/agonizing. As my luck would have it, my parking garage at work is about a mile walk to my desk, sooooooo, that nearly killed me this past week going to/from work. I’m dreading going to work like never before.
Awesome! I can’t wait to get to when they bring a new agent in. At my rate, I should be there soon; it appears there are 5 books beyond the one I’m reading now (“Two Graves” - but I’ll be done very soon with it, I’m on the last 100 pages). Thanks again for recommending these Preston & Child books, I’m really loving them…hence how I’m chewing through them like a maniac. But I don’t need a break from Pendergast, I love that character. In my mind, I think of Pendergast as a mix of James Bond, MacGyver, and with a little Steven Segal thrown in (since Pendergast’s fighting style isn’t extreme, in your face martial arts, nor is it UFC style, but it seems rather based upon leverages, bodyweight, pressure points, using your opponent’s weight/momentum.. aka Segal/aikido).
Nevertheless, I will def. add “The ice limit” to my list.
Speaking of Pendergast, did you happen to notice that there is a brand spanking new book out, titled “Pendergast”? It’s their latest. I thought about just going ahead and buying it, but then my senses came back to me and I realized that it’d be much cheaper/free, to simply get it from my handy library. Although I checked and while they do have it, it appears all 25 copies in circulation are checked out. BUT, I can still place a hold on it and get in the queue for it. But I am worried that times like these are when NOT having due dates might cause there to be some supply issues. Some jackass checks it out, sets it on their coffee table, “intending” to read it but keeps putting it off….for MONTHS…meanwhile others also do the same thing. Next thing you know, everyone who wants to read it has a hold placed on it, but only a trickle of responsible people are returning the books in a reasonable amount of time. That is the biggest problem with no due dates AND no fines.
Oh yes, I know. Pendergast: The Beginning. My Libby only got the book and not the audiobook. the hold list is MONTHS, because I tagged the “notify button” for the audiobook.
I’m about halfway through book 2. It’s been a ridiculously busy couple of weekends. I’m off tomorrow and have no plans (that I know of) this weekend. I’m gonna burn through this book and hopefully start the third next week.
Well this sounds horrible. I hope it calms down soon. My husband has been having some sort of trouble with his bottom end as well. Has some sort of a knot in his muscle that is causing pain the whole way down his leg. Zero fun.
Also, if you are still looking for a book to listen to I might have to recommend Dungeon Crawler Carl. It’s so very funny. I made my husband listen to a chapter with absolutely no frame of reference and he laughed the whole way through.
Dungeon Crawler Carl? Interesting title…I might just look that up and give it a listen…I just have to figure out how I’m going to listen to it/on which app. I’m still confused as to which one to use, I’ve heard several different ones but I don’t want to sign up and pay to be honest.
Yeah, luckily when I woke up and started moving around, today was the FIRST day since I injured it 1/29 that it wasn’t excruciating pain/throbbing/aching when I walked on it. I still tossed down my now requisite tylenol extra strengths AND advils. I would prefer to get off them as soon as I can, but right now they at least help to sort of/barely take the edge of the pain off. I’ve still been stretching today when I can at work, naturally with coworkers asking dumb questions like “oh, you stretching your legs?” (no, I’m getting ready to do office yoga. no, I just like to sit like a weirdo….etc) The stretching is hopefully offsetting me being seated for hours. And yet again, the irony….sitting for extended periods of time is bad for your piriformis and it causes the muscle to tighten up, which is bad. Yet walking around on it causes it to get more irritated and thus start hurting more, and just standing still on my leg causes it to begin hurting. Make up your mind you stupid little muscle, JFC! Sorry, I lost it, I’m screaming at my own ass now, LOL. I’m just so tired of being in pain, it really wears on you. It really makes me empathize with chronic pain patients and also realize how it just exhausts your whole body, your mind, makes it hard to even concentrate on things since all your brian can think about is the pain you are in.
Well, naturally of the 2 books I requested from my library (which I will need something, I’m on the last 30 pages of 2 graves), my library now has 1 of them ready for pickup, and it’s the book after the next that’s ready. So, I just ordered the very next book from amazon which can be delivered today. Damn, Amazon is amazing. Unfortuntely all they had was the “mass market paperback”, which if you don’t know, is like a smaller size, smaller font, cheaper paper than a normal size paperback. It’s like a travel size book. So, good thing I have readers as I will definitely be wearing them for this book. It’s called “White Fire”, and I’ll just go ahead and pick up “Blue Labyrinth” from the library on my way home today.
Well, I’m 100 pages from finishing “White Fire”, I ordered it from Amazon and just made due with it being a “mass market paperback”. It’s a good novel, maybe not one of the authors’ best, but nonetheless entertaining all the while. After this I’ve got “Blue Labyrinth” and yesterday afternoon I picked up the next 2 books after Blu labr. @ChickenLittle since I believe you were the person who suggested the Preston & Child books (which I love), can you recommend any other authors who write along similar lines? I was just thinking last night that since I’m tearing through these books, what the hell am I going to read after I’ve read them all. I only have maybe 9 books left in the Preston & Child “series” (which includes their newest “Pendergast the beginning"), so I would like to already start scouting around for a new series. So, something like these I’m reading, OR something in the horror, murder/mystery, action realm. I’ve read all of Stephen King’s books, including his latest “Never Flinch”, where he attempted to go with a murder/mystery/action novel and I was GREATLY disappointed in the effort. He should just stick with what made him a legend, AND rich; horror novels. Any other really great horror authors?
Thank you and @BethB for the suggestions. I have read most of Koontz’s books, and they were pretty good, but he’s a little ways down on my list of favorite authors. I read most of his books years ago, BUT I’m not one of those people who can reread books. I never did understand that, I just can’t really get into a book if I know how it turns out, or when I already can identify the bad guy, the plot twist, the surprise etc. from the beginning. The whole mystery is sort of ruined for me. But, to each his/her own.
Yeah, White fire is kinda so so , but I’m nearly done with it, and then it’ll be “Blue Labyrinth” and so on.
Funny, I checked out “Thunderhead” from my library when I first began reading the authors’ books, I just got intrigued by Pendergast and decided to follow that thread. It’s still sitting on my desk, I just haven’t paused from the Pendergast series to give it a read. Perhaps I’ll do that the next time the library doesn’t have my book available at my branch and while I wait for them to ship it in from another branch. Although, what my impatient self normally does in that situation is go right to Amazon and buy it, and if needed, pay extra for the shipping to get here immediately. Gotta love Amazon, it’s truly remarkable how fast they can be.
I’m definitely writing down Kent Kruger’s name for some next reading material, thank you.
I finally finished Shadow Prey. Great book. I like the writing style. I like that you get multiple perspectives. It’s kind of fun (and a bit terrifying) to see things from the killer’s perspective. I also like that the books are old enough that it is pre internet and pre cell phone. It’s fun that he has to go through multiple channels to get the information that he’s after. Also, Davenport is a bit of a whore. Lol.
Awesome! I’m so glad you are enjoying the “prey” series, and luckily for you there are tons of them to read. I agree, I find it really interesting/fun to read from different perspectives, seeing how the killer is tracking Davenport or attempting to kill him or throw him off the case, makes for exciting reading. And yes, Davenport’s a bit of a man whore, but, apparently from the author’s description, he’s a handsome looking dude, scar and all.
Well, let’s see, I’ve finished “White Fire”, then I read “Blue Labyrinth”, and now I’m reading “Crimson Shore”. After that I have “The Obsidian Chamber”, but I probably should put in some more hold requests at the library for the next few after Obsidian chamber.
If you are enjoying John Sandford’s books, then some good news for you it that I think you would really enjoy reading the books I am now reading, by authors Preston & Child. They are really fascinating murder/action/mystery books, with quite a bit of actual historical information as well. You can really tell that the authors do quite a bit of research when writing these novels. I mean, I’ve already blazed through I think 14 of their novels since I began reading them….I can’t remember but it’s probably in this thread somewhere…I think around Christmas I began. I only read books fast when I’m enjoying them.
What’s the next Prey novel in the series & have you started reading it yet?
Eyes of Prey is next. I’m gonna start it tonight. I’m trying to read 2-3 chapters to end my day every evening. I’ve been burning through my Dungeon Crawler Carl books. I’ve had a lot of drive time at work and I listen when I go for walks by myself as well, so I have been putting in quite a bit of listening time. But I like the physical books in the evening. They tend to help me relax a bit more.
Awesome! I’m no longer the only nerd I know who does this
No, it’s a really convenient (not to mention money saving) way to read physical books, & the fact that if your branch doesn’t have it, they’ll ship it to your branch free is really sweet.
BUT….I have the damndest luck, because whenever I put in for several books at one time, I’m not exxagerating, they will usually get all the books I need EXCEPT for the very next one on my list to read! This happens without fail. Speaking of, I’ve got 2 books ready for me in my current Preston & Child Pendergast series, but there is one book still “in the queue”…the very next one. Problem is, I’m already on page 220 of my very last one I have right now, “The Obsidian Chamber”. I’ve only got about 200 pages to go and with the pace I read at, well, I figure they’ve got one additional day.
But, first world problems right? If it gets down to it, I’ll just hit up ol Amazon and order the next one, get that cheap, tiny mass market paperback. OH, I did find out, you can return those and get the full price back. I ordered one for “White Fire”, read it, & has just set it aside and my frugal wife was like “hey, can you return this?” to which I laughed and said “and get like $8 back?”
SHe said 8 bucks is 8 bucks, so she returned it….then spent my refund on some sort of female beauty treatment stuff. Figures, haha.
One last thing, and I know you’ll laugh at this, but whenever I pick up a pile of books at the library, and I come watltzing out of there with them in my hand, I always feel really scholarly & smart….I rather like it. HAHA. Strange huh?
I have been on a Candice Fox mini binge.
Crimson Lake, The Chase, and Hades.
Hades was definitely a page turner.
Going back to finish both series when I get done chewing up this snooze-fest John Grisham- The Widow.
Listened to one called The Buffalo Hunter Hunter that was a crazy ass ride. Starter falling off in the middle then the end was a chaotic race to the finish line. So weird.
Not strange at all! That’s probably one of the reasons I like to roam around bookstores. And I always like when people are impressed by our home library. Nine times out of ten, if it’s something informative or useful it’s my husband’s. If you find the fiction section it’s most likely mine, but no one needs to know that.
Here’s what you should do…I’ve got a buddy who also has a home library and he purchased all of the latin, french, greek, etc. type books. British literature, philosophy, you know, all these super smart sounding books. When I was browsing his books one day, I was like “there is NO WAY you have read all these man! You don’t even like reading.”
And he laughed and said “hell no I didn’t read them, but whenever I have guest in my home, they see all those books and immediately think I’m really smart”. I laughed and asked him if that’s all he thought he needed to do in order to trick people into thinking that, and he just nodded and said yeah. So, yeah, he’s a moron, BUT if I had been a stranger and just seen all those books, I would have been very impressed. Maybe you should purchase some real fancy-looking books to fluff up your collection!
I finished “The Obsidian Chamber”, it was great, and am now just starting the next book “City of Endless Night”. I was pumped because I received an email yesterday while at work, the library had finally gotten in all of the next 3 books in the series, which I had requested. So when I got home from work, I jumped outta the car while leaving it running, grabbed a handful of books to return, then got back in to just drive across the street right outside my neighborhood to get to my library and drop off/check out books. After I finish these 3, I will only have THREE MORE books left in the series! Man, I’m bummed out about that
Finished the next two books in the Crimson Lake series by Candice Fox
Redemption Point and Gone by Midnight
Sad this series is over. Amanda is my new favorite character.
