Just finished “Memoirs from the House of the Dead” by Dostoevsky. Honestly wasn’t a fan. A few good nuggets but a long climb for a short slide.
Was also working through “The Wisdom of Life and Counsels and Maxims” by Schopenhauer and it was a phenomenal read. Only issue is that it took FOREVER to get through because practically every passage has something worth highlighting and writing on. Fantastic read.
I am in the middle of a re-read of “Thus Spake Zarathustra”. Its my favorite book. I should be reading new books, so I only do a passage a day to make it last.
I am also doing a chapter a day of “The Norse Myths” by Kevin Crossley Holland. Very well done documentation of Nordic religious myths and culture. The end notes are worthwhile, and the intro is VERY substantial.
I put away Atlas Shrugged last month. I think everyone should read it for the sheer experience of having done so, but it was like a full time job to get through it. I took breaks by reading Nietzsche’s “Twilight of The Idols”, which was very pleasing. I had overlooked it for years, and really enjoyed it. Far more direct than his other works.
Edit: If you want a wild ride, go with Kafka’s “The Trial”. I finished that a few months back and I remember reading the last word, putting the book down, staring into space and just muttering the f-word to myself off and on for about 30 minutes.

I finished thr histories by Herodotus earlier this year and want to get to Hellenica by Xenophon so I have to get through this haha … I’m on a Greek history kick this year
I read to March of the 10000 (Anabassis of Xenophon) earlier this year too which was fantastic … I loved that book

Haven’t read your suggestion, but this reminded me of Electric Kool Aid Acid test. Highly recommend audio version.
You guys are doing some highbrow reading. I just read/am reading a couple of novels: “Everything is Illuminated” by Jonathan Safron Foer. I am currently reading “The River” by Peter Heller. I like Peter Heller, if you’re looking for a good, contemporary author.

Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law Trilogy, third time though. Its amazing if you’re into fantasy fiction. Audio book is especially good. Steven Pacy is a narrating god.

Will be picking this up.
It is weird, I have never read anything by Kafka but, have read his online bio and critiques many times, do not really no why. I think it is because I would be reading something and the word Kafkaesque would come up.
Try reading “In the Penal Colony” to get a taste for his writing style and see if you like it. It’s a short story but captures his essence well. I started off with Metamorphosis and wish I hadn’t, as it’s still the least enjoyable piece of his I’ve read. Granted, his writing isn’t really “enjoyable” so much as off-putting, but still, haha.

It’s about The Troubles in Northern Ireland. I’ve only just started but already it’s been brutal.
Everyone starts off with Metamorphosis - still the only Kafka piece I’ve read. I’ll try Penal Colony after I wrap up what I’m on now

Yeah, I assume everyone started with it because it was GOOD, haha. A rookie mistake. Once I got a complete collection of his short stories it was so much better.

Currently reading The Complete Keys to Progress, Thinking Fast and Slow, and just received a copy of 365 Days of Brutality which has an excellent intro. So two training related books and one that I am absolutely struggling to get through.

I got a few chapters a day going in Complete Keys to Progress as well (I’m terrible at doing new things, haha). Still a great text. I skip over a few of the more technical parts these days and just kinda read the stories.
365 days of Brutality has some solid bits to it. If you pay attention, Jamie accidentally uses the same folklore for 2 different lifters, haha.
