Completed “City of Endless Night” and am now reading “Verses of the Dead”. I thought City of Endless night was decent, but definitely not one of their better Pendergast novels. It felt a bit rushed & I was actually able to deduce who the villian was pretty easily, and for all their other novels I NEVER seem to figure out who the bad guy is, or what the mystery behind something happening is.
I’ve got “Bloodless” next but after that, I had better right now actually put in some more holds at the library for the next several. Sadly, after I finish Bloodless, I will only have 3 more novels left from authors Preston & Child!
I know there are some separate series around other charachters, like Nora Kelly or Eli Gin, something like that, but I don’t know if I want to read them as I mainly just enjoy reading about the main character Pendergast. I’ve got to go back through this thread where @ChickenLittle suggested some other similar authors to Preston & Child to read.
Another really good one to add, if you have room and are looking for something - This Story Might Save Your Life by Tiffany Crum. It comes out on March 9th. I listened to it in December - it’s one of my top 2025 listens.
I have two things to report: one is that I’ve started Dungeon Crawler Carl on audio. I wasn’t sure initially, because there’s a lot to pay close attention to in the beginning, but now that we’re all getting used to the Dungeon I’m rewinding less and enjoying more.
The other is that I’ve finally started The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, which I’m also enjoying.
I don’t usually do two novels at a time - generally I listen to nonfiction and read fiction, but it’s going well. A nice break from good-for-me stuff or political listening.
I’m on book 4. I hope you enjoy it. I am listening to book 4 on my own and in the evenings I listen to book one on a speaker with my husband. It’s nice time together.
Completed “Bloodless” by Preston & Child, started “The Cabinet of Dr. Leng”. After that I only have 2, no 3, books left in this series: Angel of Vengeance, Pendergast the beginning (just came out this January, I bought it because all 26 copies at the library were checked out and when I requested a hold for it, I was number 137 in the queue and was like Fuck that shit, I’ll just buy it for $20). Then I have to circle back and read Crooked River, which I should have read before bloodless but somehow i completely missed that in the series.
Then Randomly I was watching, again because it’s so good, “There will be blood” the other night and remembered it was based on Upton Sinclair’s book “Oil” and so I checked that out of the library & I also checked out his other famous novel “The Jungle” about the meatpacking industry in the early 20th century, before OSHA, labor laws, or frankly before companies/bosses were forced to actually give a shit about the safety and welfare of their slaves…I mean, workers. I do know that this actual book helped raise the public’s awareness of factory life and it’s horrors.
I’m going to try to slow down a bit so that I will have some reading material to bring with me when I drive to Florida for a wedding next week on the beach, near Tampa, Madeira beach? Never been, and I hate the beach so I’m totally pumped…yay.
@meastlake1@EmilyQ I don’t know if it counts for anything, but my husband is annoyed by audiobooks and has been asking to listen to it every night. I think they are highly entertaining books.
