What Are You Reading?

Psycho Cybernetics - Maxwell Maltz

Finished Irving Stone’s Lust for Life in about 24 hours. (I couldn’t put it down.) It is, as far as I remember, the only book that has made me cry. It was probably one of the best books I’ve ever read.

Wow, strong recommendation. Haha, just looked it up and may already have read it. I read a biography of Van Gogh when I was maybe 17 that absolutely moved me. But every single Van Gogh book as the same self-portrait on it, so I have no way of knowing which I read. I suspect it may have been this one, though, because I remember hearing Don Mclean’s Vincent and being all ā€œoh, beautiful!ā€ when it’s not at all a song I’d usually like. You should try to get to that immersive Van Gogh show if ever it comes to your area. I loved it.

I’m still trapped in the Beartown trilogy. I just don’t know if I can finish. I’ve loved the story, but he keeps reexplaining things and reminding us who everyone is, and I’m wearing down.

I’m also trying to knock back a Hemingway in preparation for Key West on Thursday. Also kind of dull.

I LOVE Tale of Two Cities. If I remember correctly the chapter about Madam Defarge’s Sister is revealed in the final courtroom scene, it is the father’s testimony in letter form. So right near the end.

I waited a while in between books, so I had forgotten some of the detail and appreciated all the recaps!

Okay, thank you!!!

I’ve read it so many times and was never able to find that scene

Just finishing up A Day Of Fallen Night which is a prequel to Priory Of the Orange Tree.

I loved Orange Tree but the prequel just feels a bit re-hashed, and to be honest I don’t really care about the events of this book as much, knowing how everything eventually ends up anyway.

Not a necessary read

I did go see that Van Gogh show. And then, when I returned to the city I saw it in three months later, I went to see it again because of how much I enjoyed it.

There was a Frida Kahlo one at one point too. I’m not as familiar with her work but I always thought that would’ve been cool to see.

Beautiful song, written like poetry imo. They don’t write them like that anymore. (irony, since that is the title to another song that a grade school graduate could write…)

The Housemaid was on sale on Audible so I went for it.
The first half was definitely a book of bad decisions but, the end was good.:+1:

There’s a sequel and a third one coming out soon. I have heard that the second one is better than the first, so now that one is on my TBR. I think @Dani_Shugart has read both of them too. We should start a T-Nation Book Club! lol

That was a fun one! The sequel was almost as good, but the big twist in that first book is hard to beat. Great author!

Lots of scathing reviews on Audible for the second. I think the narrator was the biggest problem.
I’ll put it on hold on Libby but, not going to buy it… lol

Well… I guess I won’t. My Libby doesn’t have it

My Libby doesn’t have the sequel yet either, but I’m guessing they’ll get it at some point. The first one just got there like two weeks ago… I’ll let you know if/when mine gets it. I watch the ā€œWhat’s Newā€ list pretty darn close. lol

A few good ones lately:
Heft - Liz Moore
Skyfaring - Mark Vanhoenacker, which is the life-story of a modern(ish) airline pilot, really well-written
Skyfaring - Ernest K Gann, stories of the early days of commercial flying

Bit meh:
The Book of Two Ways - Jodie Picault

Just started the sequel to Wolf Hall, Bring Up The Bodies, so I assume that’s going to occupy me for the next six months if the first one was anything to go by!

Not me, but I got this for my son and last night was the first time I found him reading under the covers with a flashlight.
