Westside

mattwray,

dumbass? at no time did I insult you, but i guess you like being treated like a bitch. how old are you 15?

Yup, how’d you guess?

Are you going to dominate me over the Internet now?

The reason I called you a dumbass is because you attacked me over something I didn’t say. I quoted Squat1000 because I agreed with what he said. If you had an issue with that, you should have addressed him.

Either way, I don’t care. I’ve read all your posts, and apparently your mind is already decided to not follow “Westside” so what are you doing asking about it?

Good luck with whatever you do.

Ralf, the simple answer is that exercises that mimick the classical lifts are rotated every 1 to 3 weeks (depending on the individual) so as to prevent CNS burnout. This then allows the lifter to continually max out the muscles involved in benching, squating and deadlifting.

If you wish to max out on regular bench and squats and deads every week or so, then JUST TRY IT OUT. If it works, fine! But if it doesn’t, then follow the Westside template.

In my experience (and mine only) I like rotating the special max effort exercises every 2 weeks. My training partner finds 3 weeks optimal. It just shows that the “Westside program” is highly individualised and hence highly successful.

apwsearch, you clearly answered my question. westside does not do the core lifts to prevent burnout. in a nutshell, that’s all i was asking, i don’t know why squat1000 thinks i have dismissed westisde as an effective training program. i never said that using special exercises other than the core lifts would be ineffective, if i thought it wasnt any good i wouldnt be asking about it. i know that louie’s methods come from olympic weightlifting training and just wanted to expand my knowledge of the conjugate method. i have most of the westside tapes, but either i missed it, or wasn’t paying attention, but he does not address why the core lifts arent used. my interest came from the fact that louie’s style of training is based on soviet programs designed for oly lifting, and was wondering if these original programs also only practiced their core lifts on speed day. squat1000, i don’t want to get into a pissing match, but i don’t think you should dismiss cycling ala ed coan the way you do. i just competed in a meet and am trying to experiment w/ a new routine. i am considering a westside type program minus bands/ chains w/ more emphasis on the core lifts. chris thibaudeau’s pendulum powerlifting looks interesting except for his recommendation to do 10 sets of 3 at 90-95%(i just can’t fathom how anyone could complete that workout).

I can’t see how anyone can do this workout either.

Hey Qwerty, simply rotating exercise every so often (1 - 3 weeks) really works in terms of preventing CNS burnout? Please share your experience in detail if possible. I just started West Side a month ago. So I’m not running into CNS issue yet.

I’m just following the routine that Tate outlined in “Eight Keys” article. I am kind of stuck on this issue of maxing out every week and simply rotate exercise to prevent CNS burn out. It just sounds too good to be true. I love to max out every week.

Please share your experience in terms of how long you’ve been doing it this way, do you always max out, ever took a break…etc. I would very much appreciate your input.

Oriensus,

I’ve been following the Westside template for 18 months now and my lifts improve all the time. My comment about rotating max effort exercises every 2 weeks to prevent CNS burnout was probably too literal. I’m sure your nervous system would cope but the essential thing is will it help you improve? In my experience I have felt fresh each week to perform a max lift in either the bench or squat. Therefore I have never felt too beat up to perform, and yes I love maxing out every week also! I take a week off working out every 9 weeks just to let me catch up on other stuff in my life.

Before following Westside I did do the progressive overload method for about 10 months and I beleive I did burnout. I couldn’t sleep for more than a few hours a night, I had a loss of appetite and lost weight. But again, this is MY EXPERIENCE ONLY. Of course progressive overload works, but Westside works better FOR ME.

Oriensus, really I’m only a newbie compared to others on this board, but I’m sure everyone would agree that you should buy the Westside seminar tapes available at EliteFtns. This covers evrything you need to know about Westside.

Good luck.

Qwerty667, thanks for your reply. Newbie or not, I think you answered my question better than anybody else’s reply in just about all the different Westside thread. Thanks for sharing your experience, this gives me even more confidence in the Westside method. I can’t wait to see some results on this program. I definitely will check out the tapes, hopefully, I’ll be able to attend a Westside seminar in the near future.

Yes you need to go!!! Wendler and Tate do an awesome job … You WILL BE A NEW LIFTER or coach after you go. These guys have a love for what they do.

Just my two cents. I’ve begun to train west side and I do the core lifts every other week. I have had more progress in the last 6 mos. than I had in 14 years of lifting.

mdragon, if you don’t mind, can you elaborate more on your work out and your progress for the last 6 months. Since you’re making such great progress, I guess you’re not suffering from any CNS problems. Please tell me about your training protocol if you can. Thanks.
