Well she has mentioned that my intensity sometimes gives her concern
She’s a bit on the delicate side when it comes to working out.

At least your only like that when you’re lifting. [/quote]

Pretty much. I’m Mr. Mild-Mannered Canadian.

I was listening to an interview of Dean Karnazes recently. I love his story and his take on life. Recently…50 marathons, 50 states, 50 days. And then ran 1300 miles from NY back to Missouri. Holy shit.

Nice work Git, how did the back feel with the DLs and Tbars?

Felt a little de-trained (i.e. weak) but otherwise good. It is usually the next morning when I notice if anything is out of whack. I got out of bed fine this morning so that a good sign

It’s because of guys like him that I don’t pay much attention to people who say you can’t squat everyday or squat and deadlift in the same week etc.

Before him people probably thought a marathon a week was impossible, let alone 50 in 50 days! We need people like that to push the boundaries and see what humans are really capable of if they don’t limit their minds.

Pretty good deadlift numbers for first workout back.

When you say your back is tightening up, do you mean in a good or bad way?

Couldn’t agree more! That’s why I throw caution to the wind when people say you can’t lift AND run, or play soccer or what have you,or you can’t train more than 4x a week. You know what I say to that, I says, ā€œfuck you good sir, I’ll do as I pleaseā€ Granted marathon running is a different animal than lifting…but whatever.

Hai sexy! Miss you! Nice DLing! I just started GMing, its a weird movement…

I meant it in a good way basically as a sign I did some work. It feels very good today.

500 here I come! Well, maybe.

I agree and disagee at the same time. I can’t run, more than 5k regularly, and lift because it effs up my hams but that doesn’t mean other people can’t.

On the other hand you can’t do both optimally so you have to be willing to live with that.

You’re bringin’ sexy back! (see the pun I did there)

It’s all about managing intensity and recovery. Done properly, people are capable of a lot more than they think. Saying that…I’m not very good at it.

I was reading some stuff about the Bulgarians and their crazy 2-times-a-day training. Just doing the O-lifts and a couple or variations. Massage was a bit part of recovery.

So, what I deduced is that I need a live-in masseuse. ā€œHoney, guess what? This is Vanessa. She just graduated from massage school. She is going to help with my recovery once a day, maybe twice. The extra bedroom hardly ever gets used anyway. Uh, honey what’s with the knife?ā€

Shoulders +

w/u
band ext. rotations, band face pulls, OHP with bar…3 rounds

Push Press
95 x 5
115 x 3
135 x 3
155 x 3
165 x 5
155 x 8 x 3 reps

JM Press…just feeling these out
95 x 6
115 x 6
135 x 4 x 6 reps

calf stuff

Seated lateral raises
20 x 2 x 20 reps

Also, I notice a distinct improvement in training performance when using the creatinez. 5-10g a day.

Off to get some bike time in.

OK, I’ll admit to having a lifting man-crush on Ed Coan. So methodical, so focused, no bullshit.

ā€œThis weight here is 805. I thought that was a pretty good point to start wrapping.ā€

I literally laughed out loud at every lift he made from 805 onwards. The footage from 25-40 is mezmerizing and not just for the lifts. I love the focus and the psychology he brings to it.

The train cycle stuff at the front of the vid really solidifies the need for a plan if you want to get strong. I tend to lift depending on how I feel on a particular day rather than just stick with the plan and do what I’m supposed to do.

It’s an hour so get a coffee, a shake, a beer or a double on ice and check it out.

Good work. How did you like the JM presses?

I like them. First time doing them so mostly I played around with bar position. If the bar is coming down at about my upper chest / throat they are cool. If the bar drifts back to about chin level, I feel strain in my elbows. And I have to watch that my my hands don’t get below the height of my elbows.

They seem really technique dependent to really work. Are you going to keep up with them?

My tri strength is a bit sad so…yes
I’ve started doing close grip to pins (about 4 board height) too.

Squats +

I was feeling pretty beat from seemingly unrelenting yard work and rushing around for kid’s sports. But I checked my blackberry and I have something just about every night this week.
So, to the shed…

Box Squats (3s day)…small increments since I’m still trying to figure this lift out.
bar x 5
95 x 5
135 x 3, 3
155 x 3
185 x 3
225 x 3
245 x 3
275 x 3
295 x 3
275 x 3
…then daughter wanders into shed, ā€œDaddy, can I help?ā€
ā€œUh, thanks Honey, but Daddy is working hard and I don’t like to be distracted.ā€
ā€œBut I’ll just sit way over here. And I can write down your weights for you.ā€
ā€œIt’s very loud in here.ā€
ā€œI can wear your ear protectors!ā€
<How can a Dad say no to that?> ā€œCool sweetie. Let’s do it. How much do I have on the bar now? You add it up for me.ā€
275 x 3
…son walks into shed. Doesn’t say anything. Just watches.
275 x 3

Stiff leg deads
135 x 8
225 x 8
245 x 8

Walking lunges with 50lb DBs in backyard
10 lunges each leg…that was less than fun
10 lunges each leg…holy. shit. that sucked. And my adductors were pumped like a a mofo.

Overall, pretty happy.

I think I’m supposed to be sitting back even more. We’ll see.

I’ll have to watch the Coan vid when I have an hour to spare. I love him too.

JM presses baffle me in terms of form.

Cute pic of your daughter.

And how’s it going with Vanessa?

Thanks for reminding me 'bout the box squats!!

I kept meaning to add them in last week…

Aw! that’s cute  I wish my dad had asked me to write down his numbers instead of asking me to empty his ashtray and make him a Turkish coffee. Oh well!

Nice squatting! I know that I SHOULD know why people box squat, but I still don’t. lol! Selective reading.

Fine squatting dude and even better with the assist from your daughter.

I’m not sure how I feel about box squats for the non-geared lifter so let me know what you think after a bit.
