Hmm, I thought my womanlyness was fairly obvious…

Maybe you should change your avatar, I mean you look a lot like that guy off the sci fy films.

Pfffffffffft! Mr. Spock is one of the most respectable guys I know. I proudly use him as my avatar. Plus, I have no cool ass pictures of me lifting weights (cause I think it would be horribly awkward to tell someone to take a snapshot of me mid-bench) so I figure he’ll do for now. Not to mention he advertises my nerdyness to the fullest, which I consider to be a positive thing…

I have a few pics of you. . . you could use one of those. . .

OMG YOU SAID YOU WOULD DELETE THOSE???

Anyway, so, ya, 5/3/1 rocks…

Or just come lift when Kris and I are in the gym lifting and we can snap a pic of you as well.

Ok one last comment about crazy benching woman and I’ll shut up.

So she starts talking to me right before my final ‘one’ set and starts yipping at me about my form (which I guess is better than nagging me about biting my nails) but she’s all

“so i was watching you bench from afar and I noticed you have an arch in your lower back. You really need to try and keep your back flat” yadda yadda WTF?! Everything I’ve ever read about powerlifting bench is arch your godamn back and strive to get the best arch you can! She said I look really strong benching so my poundage should start going up real well once I finally have proper form.

JESUS LADY MY BENCH HAS GONE UP 20 LBS IN LIKE 4 MONTHS SO I THINK THAT’S PRETTY GOOD FOR A WOMAN.

End rant… [/quote]
Funny i had some rec center staff girl talk to me about the same thing. I told her exactly what was said earlier about with your back flat you are putting compressive forces on your discs and just ended with ‘that cant be good, can it?’

Really weird, your story sounds exactly like mine

Man, I did olympic squats for the first time in a few years for BBB; now that I’ve learned to squat properly low bar, high bar feels really nice. Going to stick with 5/3/1 low bar but keep a few sets of high bar during the BBB sets. Hopefully there will be some payoff

I know that this has probably been asked before but I couldn’t find it anywhere, on the deloading week do you do assistance work? If so, do you cut the weight you use in half essentially? Thank you guys for any responses.

answer is in the book, which of course you read, right?

Exciting moment at the gym today!! (well, exciting for me because I have no life so I find pretty much everything stimulating)
I went on down to the little gym with the platforms to do my deadlifting, WHICH is usually filled with 90 year old asian men doing pelvic thrusts, and I saw a dude there and he was wearing chucks so I was like EEE!! Fellow powerlifter perhaps!!! THEN he started squatting and THEN took a breather and said to his friend “damn Jim Wendler” I WAS LIKE OMG ARE YOU ARE ON 5/3/1!? aND sure enough, yep! Twas like a dream come true. Maybe we’ll wear matching chucks at our wedding…

Well as its the week before Christmas and the 1+ week; I decided to go for a 1RM on the MP and DL.
Results:
MP = 72.5kg (159.8lb) Lifetime PR
DL = 205kg (451.9lb) Over 50 PR

BP & SQ just doing the 1+ and not 1RM today

Has anyone had success modifying the setup of the lower body lifts to allow for more recovery? Problem is on Squat or DL day I never feel like I am 100% recovered from the previous lower body session. Upper is just fine so I don’t want to modify that at all otherwise I would just do something like 3 days a week to spread it out more.

Sounds like your GPP sucks tbh.

yeah, id hardly call myself conditioend, but i never have a problem recovering even with hill sprints/prowler. are you ‘moving around’ on non lowerbody days?

Do people think the sprints / prowler / sled hamper recovery? I would always recover faster when pulling the sled or flipping a tire 3x a week.

At least go for a walk 30-60min everyday. Even that goes a long way. Especially right after your leg workouts if you can schedule that in. Ideally, I’d do what Wendler recommends for GPP.

I do some stuff but might try the walking thing more often. I used to do better with that at work for my breaks but recently moved offices and the winter weather isn’t helping much for going outside.

Been getting some gains from this program. I did a number of 5/3/1 cycles, from around July. In December I decided to try and see just how far my true strength had come.

Deadlift: 140kgx10 went to 160kgx10. When I tested a 1rep max I hit 190kg
Squat: quit it for a while and focussed on front squats. Ended up at 150kgx2 on it, a definite PR
Overhead press: saw the biggest improvement. From around 60kg for a few reps, like 3-4 on a good day. I hit a triple at 85kg, during the 5/3/1 I hit 60kgx11 reps!(good for me)
Bench: always sucked. generally was stuck around 90kgx3-4. Hit 110kgx1 and 105kgx3. Again, not great but it’s improving.

Best of all, I lost about 4 kg during this time from 86-82kg. Hell, I took my chin numbers to 21 reps from around 12-13. I don’t care what anyone says; THIS SH*T WORKS.

Gonna start again next week with my numbers from a couple cycles back.

Bought this program in July as a beginner (ha)

Now my jumps have ceased every week - i will now start the BBB part of 5/3/1

I aim to stupidly (!) do a PL competition in December 2011 just to dive straight in, and it is added motivation not to be the weakest one there even if i’d only have been lifting for 18 months.

^^^^
I doubt you’ll be the weakest one. I always tell myself that no matter how weak I am there ALWAYS has to be somebody shittier. Same goes for being strong. Good luck at your meet!!

Deadlifted 230x5 today, I think that’s a PR, it was like 4 months ago I was happy with 200x4! Horrrahh

Best Wishes for your future lifting attempts
