And I was actually about to type it out again!!
Russian twists are another bad ass exercise. Makes my back feel really nice too.
Just lean back a tad more, and use some real weight - - YouTube

Is the last set for rep max the most important set of all?
yes, but they are all important sets
even the warmup sets
Do all the working sets - the last isn’t the most important, only the most fun (or awful).

Just wondering…is it possible to do 531 for life?
531 4 Lyfe!
The principles as discussed in the book are something everyone should follow.

How can I work towards a hanging leg raise?
I did knee raises for a couple weeks. I can do leg raises now. Not well but its improving.

Just to brag about my squat day (one hour ago): I’m on my second month on 5-3-1, I hit 9 reps on the last set of the 3x3 week! So far, so good!!! Thank Jim and all the guys posting on this thread!!!
Hey guys I am gonna do all my bench work paused. Would you recommend I underestimate my max even more? My max is about 265lbs, so 255 in addition to the 10% off that sound good?

I think you should find out what your paused 1RM is.
Hi all
Been meaning to post this link for a while - Defranco discusses training for fat loss and mentions sprints - along with how to use a treadmill to do them (thought this would be useful for those who don’t have a hill nearby to use). Seems to back up the idea that Sprints plus BBB for are the way to go for fat-loss.

For what its worth, I do my benches paused, but I didn’t take anything off. Just make sure that if you don’t hit your reps, especially in the first couple weeks, drop your training max by another 10 lbs and recalculate. I had to drop my bench training max 10 lbs and my squat and deadlift training maxes by 20 lbs. The lesson I learned, and the one that Jim frequently teaches, is to leave your ego at the door. if you have been doing alot of heavy singles, you won’t be used to getting the reps, and you’ll need to drop your maxes. the poundage doesnt matter, the program will take care of the weight over time.
old lardass
Given my other posts you might think this is a joke, but I am for reals. I started my week of 5 this week but instead of doing a ton of accessory work, I’ve done one or two accessories then a CrossFit workout at the end.
As long as I can improve on my main movement and main accessory work, this isn’t a problem, even if it’s a little unorthodox, is it?
I need to get in shape and I hate pretty much every form of running and cardio.

The way i see it, as long as your accessory work doesn’t hurt your main movement it is fine, it’s best if it works to improve it but people have other goals at certain times
On this point, i’m planning do run this for 18-24 months+ but after 8 months i am going to have to cut (just to make weight but i expect it wil put me at 6-7% bf) do you think i should just continue and hope i improve during weight loss and if i stall decrease numbers by 10%? or should make any changes to accessory work or main lifts?
thanks

Conor, this is perfectly fine and actually a great idea for those that actually want to get into very good shape AND still get strong (or stay strong, etc). In other words, strength doesn’t take a back seat to burpee’s, thruster’s and mad kipping power.
Is this the same Conor from IA State?
A note about ab work - I neglected my ab work for the first 10 years or so of my training. Once I began doing it, it took about 3 years of beating the shit out it to really notice a massive difference. 3 years. This stuff does not happen overnight so please be patient. So if you can’t do a hanging leg raise, don’t worry about it. Give yourself some time and attack it. But don’t expect a miracle overnight.

Yep, one and the same! It really must be a small world if you recognize me! For the record, I got turned on to 531 way back in October at NASA Nationals by Phil Wylie and I’m just now getting around to making an honest go at it.
So Jim… when are you going for a world record bench attempt?
conorh - If you wouldnt mind can you go in to detail about how you set up your 5/3/1 + crossfit? I too am looking to get into better shape.
I have been running hills behind my house but the last 3 times I was nearly bitten by snakes. Seriously, one litterly chassed me today. So I am going to take it easy on the hills for now.
^WWJRHD?
(What Would JR Hayes Do?)
Ha We were infasted with copperhead snakes 3 years ago I coulnt walk through my yard all summer long. they were everywhere. This summer its huge black snakes. I found 3 that are over 6 foot long and a couple shorter ones right behind my house.

The world of fitness is smaller than you think. The world of strength is even smaller.
