Weird Neck Problem

I have been dealing with this issue for a couple weeks now. Say I really start cranking hard in my pullups I will get this pain up the side of my neck, say up the most lateral aspect up to my ear. It will a sharp intense pain and I will somme times feel some strange clicking in my neck when it happens. The pain happens when I start straining towards the end range of the movement. Any ideas?

My guess would be the sternocleidomastoideus muscle. It can become tight from inefficient breathing patterns or bad posture; when it’s overactive, it can actually also effect the activity of the serratus anterior muscle. Does your scapula wing on that side?

No, not really, but my left shoulder is higher than my right due to having my labrum reattached 5 years ago.

Shit, sorry- I made a mistake. It’s actually the scalene muscle in the neck which I was previously referring to. However, it lies very near to the SCM, which would make me question whether perhaps both are tight. Do you experience any tightness around the shoulder girdle or neck? Any reduced ROM?
